Howard is off this week so they're replaying segments from the past few years. I usually call it an ''Unnamed Vacation Special'' but it should be called Best of Stern since it's not really a ''special.'' Here are links to my archives for what they played today:
Today's show was over around 11:10am.
Jon said when Howard gets back he'll talk about Prince. He said that they have to talk about the cover of ''Purple Rain'' that Adam Levine did. Gary said a clip of that is making the rounds on the internet. He said it's not even tied to the show. Gary said people are even telling others to forward to 3:35 to see him play guitar. Gary said no one knew that Adam could play like that. Gary said Adam kicked around a few ideas for what song to do and they thought that it would be way cooler to do Purple Rain. Gary said he might do Darling Nikki next time he comes in because that's one he wanted to do. Jon, Gary and Rahsaan spent a few more minutes talking about Prince and his career.
Jon took a call from a guy who said he thinks Prince is one of the most underrated guitar players of all time. He told a story about Prince playing for hours and switching between funk and rock. He brought up his music vault and explained why he changed his name to that symbol. Gary said they say they could have released an album a year for the next 100 years with all of the music he has. Jon said he thinks they will.
Gary asked why people run out to buy albums of people who just died. Jon said it might be a way of mourning. Rahsaan said there are also people who don't listen to his music all the time and they're made aware of it when the person dies.
Gary said he tried listening to Spotify and they are not streaming his music. Jon said you can stream Billy Paul though. They went to break a short time later.

Jon took a call from a guy who brought up how every time Howard goes on vacation celebrities die. He asked if this is some way of getting rid of people through the Illuminati. Gary said that he thinks Prince would have been in the Illuminati so that doesn't make sense.
Jon reminded everyone about the 20 Years of Sal Sternthology special that's airing all week. Jon and Gary spent a little time talking about Sal after that.
Jon said at the end of today's show they heard Monotone Matt. Jon said that some callers become a part of the show. He said some call in and they never hear from them again. Jon asked what it is about a caller that keeps them coming back. Gary said they used to have Ponce De La Phone who used to call in every day for years and then he vanished. He said he just disappeared. Jon said some characters like that have come and gone. He said others have stuck around like Captain Janks. Gary said you have to put in the time. He said even Crazy Alice doesn't get up and call the show like she used to.
Jon brought up George Takei and how no one expected him to become what he is. He said he might be the most beloved guest on the show. Gary said they had him on in the 90s and they suspected he might be gay. He said they figured he didn't want to be outed. Gary said he was probably dying to talk about being gay and maybe his agent told him not to. He said there's not an appearance he does that is not fascinating. He said he loves hearing those stories he tells. They spent a little more time talking about George before going to break.

Jon asked Gary if anyone up at NBC wanted to help him out. Gary said Fred did. He said that people didn't go out of their way to help Howard's show up there.
Jon took a call from a guy who brought up the old Batman show from the 60s and they had Milton Berle on the show playing Lavender Louie. He asked if that seems like Prince's inspiration. Jon said it's an interesting theory. He said it could have been. They wrapped up and ended the show a short time later. They were done around 11:55am.

Jon said they had Tan Mom on today. He said it was one of her finer moments on the show. Jon asked if she is more into Sal or is Sal more into her. Gary said the lines have intersected. He said as Sal waned Tan Mom grew. He said she's way more into him now. Jon said he disagrees. He said he thinks he's just as into her now as he was on day one. Jon said he's guessing that he's just as much as into her now as he used to be. Gary and Jon talked about how Sal probably thinks about her when he jerks off.
Jon asked Rahsaan where he is on this. Rahsaan said he thinks Sal likes her because she's the forbidden fruit. He said he thinks if he could have her he wouldn't want her as much as he does. Gary said he'd like to know who has given as much attention to Sal in the past 20 years than Tan Mom. Gary said he thinks Sal has an older woman thing and she may have 10 years on him. Gary said it's hard to tell with Sal too. Jon said that Sal is into her and he may deny that on the air.
Jon took a call from a guy who said Bobo has a ton of awards and more than Gary and Jon do. Jon said that's true but Gary may be able to come close. Gary said he's not sure about that. He said that he grew up in a time when you didn't get a certificate for playing a sport. He said maybe he did. He thought about it and said he doesn't really count those things.
Jon said he got a participant trophy for playing football. Gary said he won an award in college for being the outstanding student in communications. He said he was excited about that. Gary said you just go by the office and pick it up so it's not a trophy. Gary said there may have been a small amount of money attached to it.
Jon took a call from a guy who said he heard them talking about their Telly awards. He said he's a winner and a loser. Gary said they won for their E! Television show. Gary said they got their awards and you have to pay for them. He said that you have to pay for an Emmy too but people care about an Emmy. Jon said they won a Webby award last year too. Gary said it looks like a mattress spring thrown on a trophy. Jon said Robin has won some awards too. They tried to figure out what she's won. Jon said Howard won the Blockbuster award. He was proud of that.
Jon mentioned the Stump the Booey contest they have coming up and spent a few minutes talking about Gary studying for that. They went to break after that.

Jon said that Eric has won a bunch of Emmys. Eric said he's not sure how many it takes to equal an Oscar. Gary asked if it's weird for the cast of the show to be nominated and be up against each other. Eric said that Ed needs to win an Emmy. He said Jesse has never won one. He said that Ed needs to win an Emmy. He said it pisses him off. He said he's not interested in getting out there and doing the press though. He said he told him this year that he wants him to win.
J.K. said his first on camera job was playing a New York cop with Ed O'Neill playing Popeye Doyle. He said he was a prince of a fella. He said that he's totally deserving. Eric said he is so not Al Bundy or Jay Pritchett. He said he's the nicest guy. Eric said you have to get out there and do press. He said Ed doesn't want to do that though.
Jon said he saw that Eric bumped into Richard Christy outside and they're both big fans of the Kansas City Royals. Eric said he and Richard have exchanged numbers. They spent a little bit of time talking about the team and about Eric being a fan. They went to break a short time later.

Jon wrapped up the show and ended it around 11:45am.
Howard is off this week so they're replaying segments from the past few years. Here are links to my archives for what they played today:
Jon asked Taylor if he thinks Sal was just projecting his own insecurities on to Gary. Taylor said he thinks he was. He said he's got to be doing that. Jon said it opens up a lot of areas for Gary to get in his own shots at Sal. Daniel said he was listening to the Sal Sternthology yesterday and it's a very exciting thing to watch.
Gary said he got an email from Tom Chiusano who is very melancholy about the whole 20th anniversary of Sal special. He said Sal came in and called Tom a douche bag in the first 3 days he worked there. He said he didn't know where the line was and he still may not know.
Jon took a call from a guy who said he is obsessed with Sal. He asked if someone had to sit down with him and tell him to calm down with his obsession with Howard. Gary said no one ever sits you down. He said Howard does it on the air. He said Howard confronted him on the air and that doesn't need to be said off the air.
Rahsaan asked how many times Sal has come close to being fired. Gary said the time he got caught jerking off was close. He said the other stuff you can say you were doing for work.
Jon said he thinks Sal has changed over the years. He said he sort of fell out of love with Howard as a deity but there is a difference. He said he met the god and now he knows how the god operates. Jon said he still thinks Sal holds Howard in the highest regard. He said Sal won't ask Howard to stay over and watch Survivor anymore. He said if Howard did ask him to come over he'd be there though.
Gary said Sal thinks that he's the same as Howard. He thought he could hang out with him. He said Howard doesn't want to hang out. Jon said Bobo was the same way and he showed up at the hospital when Howard's child was born. Rahsaan asked what would happen if that happened today. Jon said Bobo doesn't get within 10 blocks of the hospital today. They went to break a short time later.

Jon took a call from a guy who said that Sal has changed. He said if you listen to the old tapes he had a certain bravado. He said now he's like a beaten man. He said maybe it's a combination of home and work. He said he used to fight back but it's made him hilarious and awesome. He asked if they feel that way. Gary said what really changed Sal was the 143 thing. He said he was a different guy after all of that. He said that really crushed him. Jon said it did. He said that it's hard to keep that bravado up when you've got things going on at home like that. Gary said Sal thought he might be responsible for some of that stuff at home. He said one of his best pranks he did wasn't even on the air. He said he went to a New Year's Eve party and he pulled the plug on the TV as they were counting down the last few seconds. Gary said Sal ruined it for all of those people and for his wife.
Jon said Christine knew what she was getting with Sal. Gary said women think once they get married that they'll mature. Sal didn't.
Jon took a call from John in Maryland who said he met Sal and he was a nice guy. He said listening back to the old stuff he used to be nuts. He said he's surprised they hired him and he turned out to be a great hire. Gary said he thinks Sal had a real edge and that was different than anyone else. He said Sal would do anything it took to get the job done. He said that edge was appealing to them on some level. Jon said the thing that swayed him was when he competed for Win John's Job. He said he was great in that. Jon said he voted for Sal over Richard. Gary said he won him over with that too.
Gary said Sal doesn't mean to screw people over. He said he's not malicious. Jon said that's what makes him funny as hell. Jon asked Taylor and Daniel had a few thoughts on that before they went to break.

Jon said they have to talk about young JD and his maturing. Gary said he's not so young anymore. Jon asked Gary how long he thought it would last when he heard that he had a girlfriend. Gary said he wanted him to have one for a long time. He said he thought he'd never have one. Gary said he thinks he was looking for someone to find him and that's basically what he did. Jon said he thinks they're good for each other. He said he's not sure how long it will take to get to the next step. Gary said he hopes JD has the maturity that he needs to get there. Jon said he thinks there are a few more things that will come out and keep him grounded in some way.
Gary said he thinks that JD's girlfriend will end up thinking JD will change if they get married and then she'll get upset when it doesn't change. Jon said it's the same in every marriage.
The guys spent a little time talking about JD not changing his sheets for a year. Jon asked Taylor and Daniel if they think the relationship will last. Taylor said he does. He said if she's sleeping on those sheets that's real love. Daniel said she digs his ass so that's a pretty strong aspect of the relationship. He said he's guessing she's a strange woman too.
The guys talked about how Fred has changed over the years like JD is changing. Jon said when you have changes in your life they will be noticed on the show and they will be talked about. Jon wrapped up the show and ended it around Noon.
Howard is off this week so they're replaying segments from the past few years. Here are links to my archives for what they played today:
Laura mentioned getting back into the show when she heard a Chris Rock interview Howard did and she said she told her husband he has to listen. Jon said Chris is one of those guests who will get in Howard's face and fire back at him in an interview. Jon said many guests aren't willing to give. He said once they sit down it's like they're best friends. Colin said Howard gets to talk to people who don't necessarily have friends they can talk to in the way Howard does.
Gary said it doesn't happen a lot but sometimes a guest will come in and start talking and 60 seconds in they'll ask if they're on the air because it's such a relaxed thing. He said it happened the other day with Anderson Cooper.
Jon said Colin and the guys at SNL have a crazy schedule. Colin said they do but they have the summer off unlike the Stern show. Jon asked how cut throat it is to get a sketch on the show. Colin said they write maybe 50 sketches a week and only 8 or 9 get on the air. Gary said Howard's obsession with SNL is about how it's like high school. He said if you find the right partner it's good but if you don't you just wither away. Colin said the people who are good at it make friends on some level. He said it can be a lonely place.
Jon asked Laura about her writing process. They spent a couple of minutes talking about that. They went to break a short time later.

Jon asked Colin if he would do that to Lorne Michaels. Colin said if he ever got it. He said that will be a scary day.
Jon asked Gary if he regrets doing it. Gary said no. He said he'd rather not deal with the shit but he doesn't regret it. Gary said the whole post he had up was about flying his son in to go to a Mets game. He said he probably got a little preachy and he said something about doing it if you're on the fence about something. Gary said Jason is the one who went to Howard with it too. He said Howard didn't even know why it annoyed him.
Jon asked Gary if he has changed what he posts on Facebook. Gary said he hasn't. Jon asked if he tried to friend Howard again. Gary said he tried but he's full and he can't do it.
Colin said it's such a harsh thing saying that you ''unfriended'' someone. Gary said that Facebook is weird because you find out weird things about people you knew years ago. Laura said she's only unfriended one person on Facebook. She said he wrote her privately and gave her criticism about not being supportive of his writing career. She said she just went at him and said she was done with him and that was it. Laura said he now leaves a room if she walks into it.
Jon took a call from a guy who asked why they feel it bothered Howard so much. Jon asked the caller why he thinks it was. The caller said he thinks it was a power thing. He wasn't able to control Gary. He said he thinks it's Howard not having control over Gary in that situation. Gary said he thinks Howard just felt disrespected. Colin asked if he's ever unfriended anyone else. Gary said he has. Colin said he'd like to see who they were. Gary said he went to high school with a guy who is now a Holocaust denier. Colin said it's funny that the guy uses Facebook which was created by Mark Zuckerberg.
Jon took a call from a guy who said the regular people don't friend their boss in the real world. He said that's the real problem there. Gary said Howard is still friends with his wife. Jon said it only gets weird when you unfriend. They went to break a short time later.

Jon said when you bring someone in on the show you want to see a little wackiness. He said it has to be manageable though. Gary said you want fresh ideas but not someone who will rip the place apart. Gary said he thinks that SNL is known for having cast members leave. He said they have the issue of people never leaving. Colin said it's so much fun at SNL that you don't want to leave. Gary said he's heard Lorne talk about people who stay too long or leave too early. He said he's not sure how you know.
Jon said he and Gary have taken a lot of shit over their audio books. Jon asked if that makes Laura think about all of that. Laura said she feels safe that no one will cut up her audio book.
Gary said people think when they meet Howard in person they think they're possible subjects for the show. Gary said women used to say they'd never do the show because they have no desire to show their tits. Gary said no one was asking them to and they had no desire to see them.
Jon said he wanted to talk about High Pitch Erik coming in. Jon asked if he's going to make it through the year. Gary said he got down like 24 pounds and he has more time to lose the weight in the bet he has with him. Gary said Erik wants to be thin except for the part where you have to work at it. Gary said he's not scared by the health part of it.
Laura said she's fascinated and repulsed by Erik. Gary said she should be. He said that he's gross with his sweaty hands and all of that. Laura said she thinks if she met him he'd end up with a part in her husband's next show. Jon said don't even joke about that because he can work the system.
Jon asked Laura about Ronnie and how she'd describe him. Laura said she's not sure how he got this young fiancee. She said something must be working for him. She said it's really interesting to her that she'd never be good enough for Ronnie. They spent a little more time talking about Ronnie before wrapping up the show. They were done around Noon.
Howard is off this week so they're replaying segments from the past few years. Here are links to my archives for what they played today
Jon asked Jason if he takes it personally when someone doesn't get back to him. Jason said he doesn't take it personally. He said that most people are busy. Jon said it bothers him sometimes. Gary said he feels if someone sends you a note then you have a responsibility to get back to them. Gary said he used to get offended when Robin didn't get back to him but not anymore. He said it's almost like sending a message in a bottle to her. He said she may or may not get it.
Jon asked Eddie about Robin and Dr. Drew. Eddie said he understands why Robin wouldn't want to get together with Dr. Drew. Gary said that he has apologized to her. Jon said they made up on the air one day on this show. They agreed to go to lunch. Jon said that lunch still hasn't happened.
Gary said they all agreed to take a narcissism test. He said that Robin wasn't mad that they talked about it on the air. She was upset that Drew put it in a book and told the whole world that it was the highest score he's ever seen. Eddie said that she's upset about that because she's a narcissist.
Jason mentioned he wants to hear more about Ronnie after his Limitless appearance. Jon said they'll have to talk about that when Howard is back next week. Gary said he wants to know more about JD because he thinks there's a lot more going on there. He said he'd like to do a deeper dive on him.
Jon took a call from a guy who said he finds it funny that this Dr. Drew thing bothers Robin so much. He said it shows just what a narcissist she is. Rahsaan said he'd feel the same way that Robin does if that happened to him. They spent a few more minutes talking about Robin and her test before they went to break.

Jon said he wants to talk about Sal since they're playing the Sternthology special about him. Jon asked if Sal has learned anything being up there. The guys all gave their thoughts on Sal.
Jon said what's amazing about Sal is that it never gets old for him. He said Sal has no clue about the reality of the situation. Gary said he has learned about some situations. They spent a few more minutes talking about Sal. Basically going over the exact same things they've gone over many times in the past.
Jon took a call from a guy who asked Gary why it feels like there's an animosity there between Sal and Gary. Gary said it's part of their job to break balls. He said off the air it's not there. He said he feels no animosity off the air. Eddie asked if Gary thought he'd ever be such a big part of the show. Gary said no. He said the fact that he stuck is surprising.
Jon asked Erik how good Richard is as a drummer. Erik said he's really fast and he can't pull off what Richard can pull off. He said what Richard does is way more complicated than what he does. Gary said Richard doesn't brag about it either. He said that he had Eric Stonestreet in there last week and he had to tell him everything Richard did because Richard wasn't telling him. They went to break a short time later.

Jon asked Eddie how Gary should play it there. Gary said he's going to play it low. Eddie said Gary is a huge part of media and he has a huge influence on society. He asked what they're trying to get by inviting Gary there. Gary said no one is bringing him. He said that no one brings you, Sirius buys a table. He said it's a huge dinner with like 3500 people. He said he's there to see celebrities and publicists. He said that he's there to remind people that they'd like to have them on. Gary said it's a weird group of people and maybe he'll see someone he'd like to have on the show and he may go speak to them.
Eddie asked if Obama knows who he is. Gary said he's not sure but he would like to meet him. Gary said it's not some elite thing to go there but you just have to buy a ticket. Eddie said it is a huge thing. He said it's not an easy thing to get into. Gary said it's not hard to get in there though. He said Sirius bought the table and they gave him a ticket. Gary said he was once supposed to go to a party at Anthony Wiener's and the Clintons were gong to be there. When they found out he was going to be there they gave him his money back and asked him not to come.
Jon took a call from a guy whose phone kept cutting out so they let him go. Jon said that caller wanted to know how Erik felt when Howard bashed their band a couple of years ago. Erik said hearing him bash them was fine. He said they took a byte of that and used it one of their records. Eddie said Howard mentioned him in passing once and it was great. He said Howard was talking about American Pie and he talked about the guy who fucks the mom and it was a highlight of his career.
Jason said Howard mentioned him once. He said he thought Graham Nash was on the Wrap Up Show and Gary told him it was Jason Nash and Howard said ''Who?''
Jon took a call from a guy who said he learned that Sal is unemployable outside of the show and he also thinks Howard made everything come true for him. He said Howard is the reason Sal thought he could stay over at his apartment.
Gary said he disagrees with the guy about Sal not being employable. He said Sal has the ability to sell things. He said he could easily do something else.
Jon took a call from a guy who asked how much of Sal is an act. He said he can't be as dumb as he comes off. Gary asked why not. Jon said that he's telling him that it's 100 percent genuine. He said he's had conversations on and off the air and it doesn't change. Gary agreed. Jon said Sal will never say he doesn't know something. He said he'll make up an answer. Gary said he thinks Sal thinks the way to sell is to pretend you know.
Jon got in some plugs and ended the show around 11:45am.
