Howard is off for his spring break. They're playing various segments from past years this week. Here are links to my archives for what they played today:
Jon said they had a lot of great stuff playing today. He said he thinks he wants to start off with Martin Short. Jon said Howard is a huge SCTV fan as well as SNL. Jon said that SCTV doesn't get the accolades that SNL does. Gary said he thinks that it's the way people look at things. He said it's not easy to find like it used to be. Jon said he just doesn't think it gets it's due. Chris said he knows it has a lot of comedy cred in the UCB community at least.
Gary said he thinks more than half the audience doesn't know what SCTV is. Jon explained what it was. Jon said so many great comedians came from SCTV. He said Bill Murray and Gilda Radner are a couple. They spent a couple minutes talking about some classic bits they did.
Jon and the guys talked a little more about Martin Short and his time on SNL and some of the movies he did.
Jon took a call from a guy who said for Canadians SCTV was the thing for them. He said that he discovered that before SNL. He said that's what they watched on late night TV up there. He said he loved hearing the Martin Short interview. The caller said there must be moments for Gary when Howard and the guest are killing it and they must be high fiving in the office. Gary said it's interesting because Lady Gaga gave him that feeling. He said they don't high five but they do look at each other and nod like they know it's killing. Gary said he knows it's going well when people come to his office and watch the monitor in his office. He said they don't come over to look unless it's amazing.
Jon said one thing he and Gary have is when they look at each other and look back. He said that's when things are going just right. Jon said no one knew what to expect when Lady Gaga came in and she did great. They went to break after that.

Jon took a call from a guy who asked Gary if he gets shit for asking for autographs from singers when they come on the show. Gary said that no one is allowed to ask there so they don't bother anyone with that. Jon said they had incidents a long time ago. Gary said David Wells was on and Artie got so excited he grabbed the Daily News and asked him to sign it. He said he had to explain it to Artie later that he can't do that. Jon said sometimes guests will ask to take pictures with people on the show and in that case it's alright. He said they are requesting it and the interview is over. Gary said they don't bother anyone with autographs or pictures.
Jon asked Gary about having Lady Gaga on the show and if there was a bet that they could get her in there. Gary said there was. He said that Howard thought they were just stringing him along when he told him that they'd have her on. Gary said that he saw her manager back then and told him that he had a $500 bet and the manager told him to double it. Jon said good for Howard paying off on the bet too. Gary said he really didn't want the money because the pay off was her coming in.
Jon said he was very skeptical about her coming in. He said by the end of the interview he thinks everyone was a Lady Gaga fan. Jon and Gary spent a little time talking about her performances on the show. Chris said he thought she was like an inaccessible cartoon character but she told some interesting stories about her life. Gary said they had instruments in the studio for her but her manager called the night before and asked for a piano. He said he acted like it was a last minute thing and he wasn't sure he'd be able to get it. He didn't want to tell him they had one just sitting there.
Gary talked about how crazy things got up there at Sirius when Lady Gaga was up there. Gary said she came in and she was nothing but nice to everyone there. He said she finished and he came out into the lobby about 30 minutes later and her people were still there. He said she went to the bathroom and changed into a whole other crazy outfit. They went to break a short time later.

Jon took a call from a guy who asked if they were afraid that Lady Gaga would come in wearing something over the top or doing something crazy. Gary said his job is to get them in the door and do the show. He said he worries more about them showing up. Gary said how they are on the air is Howard's job. Gary said sometimes people sit down and you just hope it works. Jon said you just don't know how it's going to go.
Gary said sometimes you can hear the moment when a guest settles into it and just goes with it. Chris asked if the guests ever ask for weird stuff in the green room. Gary said no. He said he believes people have figured out how to behave there. He said if you're going to be a dick, don't do it there. Chris said Howard might talk about it for 7 years if you have a weird request. Gary said they've had people there who are just delightful and later that day he'll hear about them walking off an interview. Jon said that some people come in and they're totally transformed.
Jon said after this show people will hear Robin talking about her cat Brangelina passing away. Jon said he's not sure if Robin is the closest to her pets because Howard has gotten really close. Gary said he has so many more of them than anyone else. He said they have a cat area in their house. He said Howard knows who they all are too.
Jon said later in the show they hear from Underdog Lady. He said she's one of his favorite characters. Chris said that she's one of the reasons he got into the show. He said his brother found Howard through the Channel 9 show. He said all he talked about was Underdog. Chris said that she stole the show when they did the Hollywood Squares game. Gary said he realized she was gold when Stuttering John asked her an innocuous question that was in sexual nature and she punched him really hard. Jon asked if he thinks that they'll ever get her in there. Gary said he thinks not seeing her is more fun. Jon said he would love to see her have a face to face with Howard. Gary said he's heard some of her breakdowns and he's not sure what would happen. Jon said her voice is just so distinctive. He said that gets Howard every time. Chris said they interviewed her at a magazine called Weird New Jersey. He said all they talked to her about was about how mad she was at Howard.
Gary said Underdog Lady is amazing. He said they're familiar with her now but imagine being in her town and you see her show up for a costume contest for 12 year olds.
Jon took a call from a guy who asked Gary if he thinks they could get Springsteen in there to promote his new book that's coming out later this year. Gary said the day he saw the press release he hatched a plan. He said that it's something he'd love to do. Gary said it's certainly the perfect place for him to come. He said if you write a book this is the place you want to be.
Jon got in a plug for today's Sternthology and wrapped up the show. They were done around Noon.
Howard is off for his spring break. They're playing various segments from past years this week. Here are links to my archives for what they played today:
Today's vacation special was over around 11:00am.
Jon asked Harlan if any of the Wack Packers get his interest enough to go on Periscope to watch. Harlan said not even one bit. He said today's rank out was really tough to take. He said he's hoping to erase that stuff from his mind at some point today.
Jon and Gary talked about Erik and Fred fighting and how Fred should know better than to fight with Erik. Gary said Fred should be the bigger man. Gary said Erik has a very low IQ and he can do things that make you think that's about right and then he will do something that makes you wonder. Jon said there are things that he does that take intelligence. Harlan said he has worked it. Gary said he has had to call Erik to stop using Howard's name and stop doing things with his name. He said now he's so famous he doesn't even have to use his name. Jon said Sal isn't the brightest bulb but he can do great phony phone calls and do certain things very well.
Harlan asked what Fred's motive is. Gary said he thinks he may have had something happen that sent him over the edge. Jon said it might be a mystery they'll never find.
Jon took a call from a guy who asked about the open of the show where Jon says ''Good morning everybody!'' He asked where that comes from. Jon said it's a goof on Mike and the Mad Dog. He said he's done it since the first day there. They went to break after that.

Jon brought up the Jason Bateman replay and went over what they talked about in that interview. Jon said they talked about Valerie Harper leaving the show and what happened after that. They talked about other shows that have had similar things happen over the years.
Jon also brought up how Jason's dad was his manger but he had to get rid of him and get someone else to do it. Scott said he's never known that to work out. Gary said Corey Feldman came on their show and talked about how both of his parents managed him and they each took 20 percent. He said that was one of those things that was legal at the time too.
Jon said Jason is doing movies now and Arrested Development too. Gary said one of the things he talked about in the interview was that his father in law is Paul Anka. Gary said Jason talked about how he suffers from the sins of his father in law.
Jon took a call from a guy who asked if Howard has a set format for interviewing guests. He said he seems to go easier on some than others. He said Howard seemed to let Jason off the hook on some things. Gary said Howard has no set format. He said they do research and Howard has it in his head where he's going to go with the interview. He said it's not set but he's the one who figures out where it's going to go. Jon said that Howard gets the guests comfortable and that gets them to talk. Jon asked Scott about doing an interview show and Scott told him what it's like for him to do interviews. Scott said they don't do the pre-interview thing and tell the guest what they're going to ask. Gary said he's never had that on any of the late night shows he's done. They went to break a short time later.

Jon said he is always fascinated by people who keep it going and stay on the phone. He said maybe they're into that news story and not paying attention.
Jon asked Harlan about how crazy that whole OJ story is. Harlan said people still love to argue about it too. He said the actual evidence is interesting. He said you could make it look either way if you made a documentary about it.
Jon said he wants to talk about Robin a little bit. He said she revealed that when she takes a dumb that she wipes with a cloth and puts it in a bucket to be taken away.
Harlan said he was at a country club where they asked people not to dispose of hand towels in the toilets. He said he wonders who actually does that. He said it's not just a Robin phenomenon. He said other people are doing it too. Gary said that they were in Tampa at Bubba's wedding and Bubba told them about how he had to wipe with a towel when he got really fat.
Jon said another great anniversary was for Gary's love tape. Jon said it was the 15th anniversary. Jon said that Howard and Robin found more stuff to bust Gary's balls over in the clip today. Jon said that it is the gift that keeps on giving.
Jon took a call from a guy who asked why Howard isn't talking about the OJ TV show. Gary said he probably hasn't watched it. The caller said he pulled up that Al Michaels thing for his wife to hear while they were watching the TV show. Gary said he hasn't watched that show yet either. He said he has them all on TiVo. Gary said he's heard it's not all that great but it's fun to relive it. Jon said his wife was on bed rest during that trial and she couldn't get enough of it when it was on. They spent a few more minutes talking about the trial.
Jon wrapped up the show and got in some plugs. They were done around 11:40am.
Howard is off for his spring break. They're playing various segments from past years this week. Here are links to my archives for what they played today:
Today's special was over around 11:05am.
After the break Jon read an intro Rapaport wrote for himself with misspelled words and all. Michael said there are higher ups in the building that keep asking him to come and he misreads it like that. Jon said he read it exactly as it was written. Michael said the schools failed him.
Jon and Michael talked about one of the members of A Tribe Called Quest dying. They spent a few minutes talking about Phife Dawg's death since Michael did a documentary about the band.
Jon moved on to talk about the segment where Howard talked about working with Don Imus. Jon said Howard talked about how he doesn't hate Imus but there were things that bothered him about the guy. Jon asked Gary if he thinks Howard had respect for Imus when he got to WNBC. Gary said that Howard and Imus weren't looking to be friends. He said he thinks Howard was coming on fast and Imus was the guy in the morning. He said that people in the building were talking about how Howard was the hip one. Zach said he wonders if he is going to have someone come along and replace him. Jon said Zach talks in his book about how he overcame things in his career. He said you need to be funny or no one will care. Zach said you really have to earn it and be twice as funny when you're in a wheelchair. He said you have to dispel things that people have in their minds.
Gary said they've had a lot of disabled comedians on the show over the years. He said they had a CP comedian and Doug Bady who opened for Sam Kinison. He said they have a long history of having them on the show. Jon said Howard treats them all the same and that's what people respond to.
Michael asked if they've ever had anyone on the show with caged animal syndrome. Jon asked him to expand on that. Michael said he thinks it's self explanatory. Gary wondered if he was going for a joke. Michael said he's not. He told them to look it up. Gary said he doesn't have the time. Zach said he might be getting it right now in that room.
Jon took a call from a woman who said she has loved Michael Rapaport for years. She told him that she loves A Tribe Called Quest and that documentary made her love him even more. Michael said Gary should download Midnight Marauders tonight on his way home from work. Gary said he actually has it. They spent a little more time talking about Michael and the love and hate he gets being on this show.
Jon asked Zach what he thinks makes a good guest on the Howard Stern Show. Zach said they have to be ready for anything.
Jon said when they talk about what makes a good guest on the show they have to generate some type of reaction. Jon asked Gary about how he deals with it. Gary said it's nice when people come up to him and tell him how long they've been listening. He said he tends to focus on the negatives though. He said that he's walked into a room and people are talking about him and he's clueless about it. Gary said he was in a pizzeria on Long Island once and someone mentioned his name so they were all talking about what a douche bag he is and they're all behind him. Gary said he said something to them on his way out. Gary said he went into a spa once with his wife and there were 6 women in the room talking about how anyone could be married to that gross man from the Howard Stern Show. He said she told them that she's married to him and if they want to say something they can say it to her face.
Gary said the thing that he likes hearing the most is that they've been keeping people entertained in their cars for years. They went to break after that.

Jon said he wants to move on to JD and his spoon collection. Jon said JD can't hide anything. He said he made the mistake of showing that it got on his nerves when someone would talk about it. Gary said they all blew it out of proportion. Jon said he thinks people still send him spoons. Gary said what he should have done was put them up in his office. He said he gets upset though.
Michael asked about the spoon collection since he apparently never heard the segment. Gary explained to him how there are collectible spoons out there and some people collect them. Michael said he is a strange fucking guy. He said that he's on the fringe of that Wack Pack shit. Zach said it's fine if you're a 70 year old woman in Wyoming but not a 30-something year old guy in New York. Gary said the collection wasn't that big but it was more than one.
Jon took a call from a woman who said she wants to call in to defend Fred's laugh. She said during that spoon segment Fred let out a laugh about something and it was the best laugh she's ever heard. She said it was a deep belly laugh and there is no way it was fake. Gary said he never thought Fred's laugh was fake. That was Howard's opinion.
Jon asked Michael what he collects. Michael said he collects photo books. Jon asked why that's different than spoons. Michael said it just is. He said it's weird to collect spoons. Michael said if Gary came to his house he'd learn something from his photo books. Zach said a spoon collection is like one degree away from a human hair collection. He said that's what Jeffrey Dahmer would collect. Gary said they know a guy with a celebrity hair collection actually.
Jon took a call from a guy who said he is a huge fan of Michael's. He asked where JD's spoons are now. Jon said he made an announcement months ago that he wasn't going to take more. He said he thinks he still has some in his apartment though. Michael invited people to keep sending them in to JD.
Jon took a call from a guy who said he's a big fan of Michael's and he's tried to call in before to say that and they didn't let him through. Michael said he knows that's what they do there. The caller asked if JD got the spoon that Whoopi Goldberg was going to send to him. Jon said he's not sure about that but he may have.
Jon said they have Wack History with Big Foot coming up on Saturday. Jon had a clip of something they're playing this weekend where they pranked him with Little Lupe clips. Jon got in some plugs for that special and spent a little more time talking about how great Big Foot is.
Jon got in some plugs for Sternthology and wrapped up the show. They were done around 11:45am.
Howard is off for his spring break. They're playing various segments from past years this week. Here's are links to my archives for what they played today:
Today's vacation special was over around 11:05am.
Jon said Howard's mom used to call in all the time. He said that he'll ask her anything and she'll answer anything. Jon said they've gotten to know the family intimately. Gary said Howard's kids are grown but when mommy calls you revert back to that kid again. Jon said he picked up a lot of stuff his parents did. Jon said with the coffee thing it's something else.
Jon said with the coffee he wasn't sure if it was going to stick. He said it has and it fuels him in the morning. He said there was a time when he wouldn't touch coffee. Gary said he can't drink it because he needs his own bathroom. Rahsaan asked if it makes him shit. Gary said it does. Jon thanked Rahsaan for making that clear.
Gary and Jon talked about flying together and how Gary is claustrophobic and he has freaked out on a plane. Gary said he can't sit in a middle seat. He said he booked a seat and the airline switched it without telling him so he freaked out. Jon said he was on the window so he was no help. He said Gary needs the aisle and he was losing his mind. Gary said he had to fly once and he wasn't able to sleep the night before just thinking about where he had to sit. Jon said Gary flipped that day.
Jon said they should leave this open to the callers. He said Gary has an aisle seat and a couple comes on the plane and asks him to switch seats. He said Gary refuses politely. Gary said he used to feel bad about this but not now. He said he has planned out the flight. He said that he has moved before but one aisle seat to another aisle seat. Gary said there were women on the plane who were together so he was asked to move and he refused and this woman glared at him like he was a terrible person.
Rahsaan said he doesn't think it's a big deal if someone won't move. Gary said he's not sure it's that big of a deal to be apart from someone for 4 hours. Jon said Gary is heartless. Gary said Jon is just as heartless than he is. Jon said he doesn't have that problem that Gary has. He said he'll sit at a window seat and won't move. He said he's the ideal person because he won't get up.
Gary said he will give someone one shot to go to the bathroom. He said he has said things to people who get up more than once. They went to break a short time later.

Jon said they sort of grew up with Dr. Ruth and how she got her show is amazing. Gary said she was teaching sex education at his college. He said he took the freshman class with the other person who was teaching it at his school. Gary said Dr. Ruth started doing a on radio and she was talking about sex. He said it became a big deal around the campus. Gary said they did it under the bullshit guise that it was social affairs. Gary said they were doing it as a serious thing so it wasn't held to the standards that regular radio was. Jon said if Dr. Ruth is behind him on a plane he'd be able to lean all the way back because she's tiny.
Gary said Dr. Ruth has always been a good guest. He said they talk about her personal life and she gets upset. He said he's always loved her on the show.
Gary said he thinks that Adam Carolla and Dr. Drew were paired up because they could get away with talking about sex because Drew was a doctor. He said Adam would get out of control and he was getting away with it because there was a doctor there.
Jon took a call from a guy who said it was interesting listening to Dr. Ruth because he saw her on in Israel. He said he's heard her on Howard for a long time too. He said there were some uncomfortable moments with Howard talking about Caitlyn Jenner and stuff like that. He asked if they remember what the mood was like that day as far as tension between them. Gary said he doesn't remember there being tension. He said the thing he does remember was that they had the birth of the sound drop of Dr. Ruth saying ''Robin.'' Gary said when you hear it in context it's weird. The caller said Howard seems to have a certain respect of people that age. Jon said he thinks he does.
Jon took a call from a guy who said that Dr. Ruth showed that an older woman can have a love affair. He asked if they have any plans for a dating game with Robin. Gary said they have none. He said they won't push that on her but if she wants to do it they will.
Jon took a call from a guy who said that what they're talking about with Gary is a phobia. He said he thinks he can get around the claustrophobia. He said that he also thinks Gary should get the seat he paid for too. Gary said that it's not cheap to get those seats ahead of time. Gary said that he was on a plane and they were throwing people off the plane. He said one guy didn't get thrown off because his son was with him. Gary said he told them ''Fuck 'em, throw them both off.'' Jon asked if they've ever taken the money and gotten off. Gary said he hasn't. Rahsaan said he will if they offer more than $500 and take care of his hotel room. They went to break a short time later.

Jon said this weekend is the last for Wack History Month. He played a clip from one of the segments they'll be playing where Big Foot had trouble saying banana. Jon said that will be on this weekend. Crackhead Bob is on Sunday.
Jon took a call from a guy, Tommy, who said that he is the guy who records the show on cassette. Jon said that things have changed over the years and Gary convinced him to use the app. Jon asked if it's made his life easier. Tommy said he got the app about 2 weeks ago. He told a story about getting seats on a plane and how his wife had to sit next to someone else who threw up the entire flight. Gary asked if his marriage survived those 3 hours they weren't together. Tommy said it did.
Gary asked Tommy about the cassette thing and how the app thing is working out. Tommy said it's very useful. He said he can just switch over from the radio to his phone. He said it picks back up where he left off.
Gary asked how much money he's saving him with cassettes. Tommy said he's not done with them yet but it wasn't a big cost to him. Jon asked if he can see himself stopping the cassettes totally and moving to the app completely. Tommy said he still uses them in the house. Gary said he could just use the phone. Tommy laughed and said he guesses he can. Jon said Gary is a creature of habit too. He said it's tough for him to get away from the habit. Gary said he can do whatever he wants but he thinks it's a lot of work. Tommy said it's a win-win either way.
Jon let Tommy go and said that he'll never stop using the cassettes. Gary asked if Jon had a big collection of cassettes. Jon said he did. He said he has the briefcase full. Gary said he had one full of just Bruce Springsteen stuff.
Rahsaan asked if they have made mix tapes. Jon said he's guilty of doing that. Jon said it worked reasonably well. Gary said he had some mix tapes that he shared. Rahsaan said he had a love tape too.
Jon took a call from a guy who asked if Gary is really asking someone about using outdated technology when there's an easier way to do it. Gary said it's a different thing. Gary said Tommy said it was part of his routine and not part of an experience. Gary and the caller went back and forth with that for a minute. They spent a little more time talking about the days of cassettes and what it was like using them.
Jon wrapped up the show and got in some plugs for Sternthology. They were done around 11:40am.
Howard is off for his spring break. They're playing various segments from past years this week. Here are links to my archives for what they played today:
Today's show was over around 11:05am.
Will said that they're saying it like they sort of pulled it off. Jon said they killed it. Will said it was a massive undertaking. He said he just tried to remain as ignorant as he could to play the part. Chris said it was a big love letter from the screen writer to the Farrelly brothers. They spent a few more minutes talking about the movie and the history of the 3 Stooges.
Jon said Jim Carrey complimented them on their film after turning the movie down. Will talked about how they actually slapped each other in the movie. He said people ask about it and he tell them they actually slapped each other. They spent a short time talking about how they figured out something called ''soft fingers'' so it didn't hurt so bad.
Gary asked if they've ever heard the Larry Fine at Woodstock bit they did on the show. Will said he never has. Gary explained the bit and made it not so funny. Will said that Billy West actually helped them out with the movie. Will said Billy is another one of those Stooge heads out there.
Gary asked why it is that women don't love the Stooges like guys do. Chris said his mother loves them but he's never met another woman who does. Will said maybe they've never been exposed to it. He said they should run it after Girls or something. They went to break a short time later.

Jon took a call from a guy who said Gary pointed out the Larry Fine bit and he remembers it being on the Crucified by the FCC box set. He said he loves listening to it. He said he doesn't hear a lot of those bits on Sternthology. Gary said that box set came out 20 years ago. Jon said it's actually 25 years.
Jon said after the Wrap Up Show they will be playing the segment where Howard talks about people going to Mars. Jon asked if anyone would want to go to Mars. Gary said no way. Gary said just send him back the pictures. Gary said it's nice here. Will said if he has endless potatoes like Matt Damon then maybe he'd be okay. He asked how long it would be. Jon said years. They spent a little more time discussing that.
Jon took a call from a guy who brought up the Graham Nash interview and he wondered if they have a top 5 people they'd like to interview in studio who are no longer with us. Jon said he'd love to hear John Lennon. Gary said he thinks he'd be numbers 1, 2 and 3 on Howard's list. Gary said Howard loved John and he thinks that he would have come on the show and they would have gotten along brilliantly.
Jon asked Chris who he'd like to hear. Chris mentioned Sinatra. Gary said he's not sure Frank would have understood Howard. They went to break a short time later.

Jon said something that played on the channels years ago was the Tom Bergeron special where he had recordings with the Stooges. Gary said Tom had tapes that he had to track down and he did this special with them. Gary said David Hinckley did a story about it and how great it was. They spent a little more time talking about that special and some of the things that were included in it.
Jon said he's going to transition to Graham Nash. Jon said that the band can't get along and he wonders who the problem is. Gary said he's read a lot of books about the guys and David Crosby lost a girlfriend in a car accident and Graham helped him get through that. He said he's not sure what happened between the two of them. The guys spent a few more minutes talking about the Graham Nash interview.
Jon took a call from a guy who said Will was on Shameless and he was great in it. He also asked how he got the role and if it's a turning point in his career since it was more drama than comedy. Will said he auditioned and got the role and that's about as interesting as that gets. Will said he has done drama and he'd love to do more of it. Gary said he loves Shameless. He said his character had two settings, crazy and fucking crazy. He said it must be fun to play. Will said he'd ask if he was going too far and he never did. Will said they were in a real neighborhood doing it and he had real neighbors yelling at him.
Jon took a call from a guy who brought up Jerry Garcia from the Grateful dead for the dead people to interview. Gary said he's not sure Howard was a huge Grateful Dead fan. He said that his love for a guest sort of makes the interviews great.
Jon got in some plugs and wrapped up the show. They were done around 11:40am.
