I won't be listening to this whole special trying to figure out what they left in and what they edited out. What I'll have posted here each day will be wherever they start that day's edited down version of this special. I'll link to my archives of the 4 acts if you're interested in seeing what they covered originally. Here are links to the original four parts of The History of Howard Stern:

Jon asked Judah about how Howard turning the book into a movie and how he liked that. Judah said that the movie is really good and he loved Paul Giamatti playing Pig Vomit.
Gary said he loved the idea of calling the book ''Mein Kampf'' but the book company said no one would have put it on the shelves like that.
Gary said he remembered going out to dinner with friends and he said that Howard was going to be number one in on the best seller list. He said they all laughed him off. He said he was so happy when it came out as number 1.
Gary said the book signings were really crazy. He said Don Buchwald called and asked them to have more cops out and they laughed him off. He said they didn't know how to deal with the crowd. He said they took a car to the book signing and traffic was stopped. He said Howard thought he was going to be late but it turns out it was the crowds that were holding them up. Gary said the car stopped on 5th Ave and the crowds were huge. He said they got Howard out of the car and just about had to lift him through the crowd. He said the best thing was that it was unexpected. He said then that happened.
Jon said then Howard ran for governor of New York. He said Howard believes he could have won. Gary said he could have. He said he remembers going up to Albany and looking for a place to do a broadcast from. He said that was a fun trip going up there too.
Jon said things kept going until Howard pulled the plug. Gary said they were really in politics at that point. Judah said he remembers it being pretty great. He said it was real and it was also like a satire of the political process. He said he thinks Howard would have won and imagine what that says about the whole system. Jon said it's pretty amazing.
Jon said Howard also announces that there is going to be a movie based on the book in today's show. Jon asked if Gary was dreading that. Gary said he was looking forward to it. He wondered who was going to be in it and if he was going to be in it or not. He said he was very excited about the news. They ended the show a short time later. The show was over around 11:15am.

Jon said they talked about the funerals but the Cleveland funeral is one for the ages. Gary said they got their wires cut and Howard made it amazing. He said he knew how to make it great. He said it's one of their greatest shows.
Jon said people were saying that they'd never make it there. Gary said that they were saying that Cleveland was different but Howard knew that funny in one place is funny everywhere.
Jon said the OJ trial was in 1995 and that added to the show a lot. Gary said that was such a big part of the culture at the time. He said that if you were part of that trial you'd be famous for a week.
Jon said that led to the most famous prank phone call of all time. Gary said the scale of that is amazing. He said that it was on a network and it was Peter Jennings reporting at the time. Jon said Al Michaels pointed it out to them in only the way he could.
Jon said Fred got married and had a bachelor party. Gary said that he has conflicting feelings about that. He said it was a scary day for Fred when he fell. He said the people at the hospital were treating him like shit because he was so drunk. Jon said that Fred was hanging out with Gay Rich at the bachelor party too. Gary said they still have the leopard skin thong Gay Rich was wearing that day.
Jon said that they also heard from William Shatner who took a visit to the Homo room. He said Shatner went right along with it. Gary said there was a very long time when Shatner wanted no part of the show. Then they did the channel 9 show and he did that and then the radio show. He said the Homo Room was like the third time he came in.
Jon said that Sal the Stockbroker also started pranking Gary around that time. Gary said Sal really annoyed him in the beginning. He said he never envisioned that he'd be seeing him on a regular basis. Gary said he bonded with Sal during the Win John's Job thing. Jon wrapped up the show after that. They were done around 11:40am.

Jon said that it's one thing for Howard to make a movie but Howard's fame was sky rocketing. Jon asked Chris if it was an epiphany for anyone he knew. Chris said he was 16 when the movie came out. He said he and his friends wanted to see it so bad but their parents weren't going to drive them. Chris said they had to go so his friend had a tandem bike that they rode to see the movie. He said that they had to see it and they just left the bike outside the theater. He said in high school you can't be caught on that bike. He said his friend didn't care if it got stolen. Gary asked if there's anything less cool than that. Chris said maybe bumper cars.
Jon asked Gary about shooting in Central Park with AC/DC. Gary said it was great. He said that they had all of those fans out there and they all got like 20 bucks to be an extra. He said it was heady shit having AC/DC out there.
Jon said that they had some of Hank the Drunk on today. Gary said he was drunk all the time but what you saw is what you got from him. He said he really drank a lot. He said he has never seen anyone drink that much. Jon said they didn't know how smart Hank was until Gary found out the hard way. Gary said they had him come in to play Rock and Roll Jeopardy to warm him up and Hank kicked his ass. He said that the guy was really smart.
Jon said the soundtrack was another thing they talked about today. Gary said that a lot of the songs were produced by Rick Rubin. He said he has a gold record in his man cave of that soundtrack. He said it was number 1 in the country. He said it was really cool.
Jon said that they also had the Jesus Twins on today. Jon said that they demanded to be on the soundtrack. Gary said that no guest has ever been on for such a short time and made such an impact. He said it's 20 years later and they're still talking about it.
Chris said that Hank and Beetlejuice are so much about the E! show. He said that the radio show was underselling how bizarre the show can be. Gary said Hank really loved being on the show. He said Hank went to Doug Goodstein's wedding and he was so well behaved because he loved Doug so much.
Jon said they had the premiere of Private Parts today too. Gary said that the celebrities that were there were crazy. He said he has a great picture of his mother and father in the back room with the VIPs. He said that his mother and father are there and Flavor Flav is talking to them with his clock around his neck.
Jon said this was a great time for the Howard Stern Show and Howard Stern. Jon wrapped up and ended the show after that. They were done around 11:30am.

Jon said Norm MacDonald also brought in Artie Lange. Lisa said she remembers Artie on Norm's sitcom. She said it was a beautiful moment. Gary said as soon as Norm came in that day norm mentioned Artie. Gary said he asked Artie if he would tell his stories on air and Artie said he didn't care. Gary said he thinks Norm brought Artie in so he didn't have to deal with his own shit.
Jon said around that time Howard was taking his music seriously. He said Howard and Fred took The Losers very seriously. Gary said it started out as mocking other bands. He said there were a bunch of celebrities who had bands at the time. Gary said something weird happened and all of the shitty players got kicked out and better players were brought in. Gary said they'd come up with a song and they'd rehears into the afternoon. He said Howard takes things very seriously and he'd put in a lot of hours. Jon said it was kind of a goof but then it wasn't. Lisa said that's why she loves Howard. She said everything he picks up he takes seriously. She said that it took on a huge proportion.
Jon said that Gary backed James Brown on trumpet playing Papa's Got a Brand New Bag. Gary said the downside is that he never got to defeat Tina Yothers.
Jon said they were on The Magic Hour performing Wipeout. Jon asked if Magic had any idea what was coming that day. Gary said that all Magic knew was that they were coming to boost the ratings of the show. Gary said he got to hold the microphone for the farter on that show. Lisa said that's the most memorable thing to happen on the Magic Johnson show. Gary said they would play the monologue every day and goof on him not being able to pronounce words. He said he's such a nice guy though.
Jon said Gary also revealed his love tape on the show. Gary said that he didn't bring up the tape. He said he was broken up for years and the girl was really cool. He said he never thought she'd be the girl to bring out the tape. He said that it was this guy who dated her who knew about it. Gary said it was like the end of the show when this guy called in. He said he mentioned the tape and he remembers a chill going up his spine because he knew exactly what he was talking about. He said that he admitted to it and then it became history.
Jon said the tape became a part of history of the show. Jon asked Lisa why that tape stands above all others. Lisa said she's a softie outside of the business and she thought it was kind of cute. She said it was kind of gay but it was sweet too. Lisa said that maybe Mary was on to something before anyone else knew how Gary was.
Jon said Gary's tape wasn't as creepy as Vinnie Favale's was. Lisa said that one creeps her out. She said that she feels very rapey after that. Jon said that it worked out for Vinnie. He said he's been married for a long time now.
Gary said he heard his kids watching a show called American Dad one day and he heard someone say ''Oh Debbie'' and he had to run in and rewind it. He said it turns out one of the writers is a big fan of the show. Gary said it was a reference that you couldn't miss.
Jon asked Gary about Howard breaking his balls over the tape and how hard that was to handle. Gary said he didn't know what was coming. He said he had an idea where the tape was and he put it in the night before. He said it was worse than he remembered it. Gary said it wasn't about the money. He said he is stupidly loyal to the show. He said he could have said he wasn't able to find it. Gary said it was like walking naked through the town with people throwing stuff at him. Jon said the guys who came in to break his balls were pretty funny.
Lisa said that's one of the most iconic parts of the show. Jon said Gary had to deal with what was coming that day. Gary said Robin Radzinski was running the E! show and they had to take it and bump it up to a different format. He said she turned to him and said ''Oh Gary...'' and that's when he knew it was something special. They wrapped up the show after that. They were done around 12:00pm.
Here's my rundown of the new stuff they ran today:
Next up A.J. Allen said that Artie Lange settled into his role as sidekick on the show. He said the next shake up was a big one. We heard Robin talking about how her driver told her about Stuttering John being hired at the Tonight Show to be the announcer. Robin said she didn't think he heard that right. She said that there was no way he was an announcer. Robin said she had to go home and find out more.
Howard talked about how Jay Leno never called him about that. He said they were people who did business together and they helped each other out. Howard said he found it odd that Jay would hire someone so identifiable from his show to put on his show. Howard said he would have liked to have been able to counter his offer for John. Then we heard John talking about how that should have come from him. Howard said he called Jay and said he never would have stood in John's way to leave. He said that Jay told him that they weren't paying him anything there so he was giving him a good paying job. Howard said he ended up calling jay an asshole and Jay asked if they were still friends. Howard said he didn't want to be friends with an asshole.
Gary said things were very tense around the office. He said that John gave his 2 weeks notice and they let him stick around for those two weeks. He said he and John got into an argument one day and after it was over John hugged him. He said he was very emotional that week.
Scott the Engineer said John asked him to help him record something for him. It was a test for his announcing. He said he was doing the voice over tape for the Tonight Show. We heard Fred doing his impression of John doing that tape. Gary said he could have done it anywhere but here but he trusted Scott to keep it quiet. Gary said that he used to goof on Scott so much and he still trusted him.
Scott said John asked him to erase the clip so he pretended to do that. He said when he announced he was leaving he had a copy. Fred said John was so angry at Scott for doing that to him. He said he doesn't think that he's spoken to Scott since then.
They played a clip from the day Howard played John's audition tape. They played a little bit of that and goofed on John for a short time.
Next up Gary talked about how they brought people in to try to win John's Job. He said they brought in people like Sal, Richard, Shuli and Dan the Song Parody Man. Gary said Richard was really one of the best. He said they only knew him from the weird voicemails and things. He said he remembers he had hair down to his ass. Then we heard from Richard Christy who said he was listening to Howard on radio when he was living in Florida. He said he was a big fan of KC's and he'd make songs and leave voicemails for him. He said they stated playing them on the radio and he'd hear them while he was at work.
Next we heard Sal Governale talking about how he used to call the show calling Gary a Horse Tooth Jackass. He said he got on the show a lot and he wanted to be part of it. He said he thought about how he could be a part of the family. Then Stuttering John called him and said that he was leaving so he could get in there and audition. Sal said it paid off and worked out very well.
Richard Christy said he thought that they'd never consider him for the contest. He said he had to try so he recorded some bits and songs and sent them in. He said Howard played them on the air and said he had to get in there as a finalist.
That led into a clip from the Stern Show where Howard announced the Get John's Job contest. Then Howard played an entry from Richard Christy where he did a song parody about KC called ''Guys, Guys, Guys.'' He also had a Ryan Seacrest bit that Howard played. He played a Baba Booey song parody that Richard made too. Howard said he thinks he should just give him the job.
After that we heard Gary Dell'Abate talking about how that contest went on for 10 weeks. They eventually got it down to 10 guys and then to 3. It was Sal, Richard and Yucko the Clown. He said it came down to Richard and Sal. That led into a clip where Howard announced the winner of the contest.
Here's some of my rundown from July 1, 2004: It came down to Sal and Richard. Howard then said something that got the delay hit. He spent a minute talking to the two of them and then said that the race was close toward the end but Sal came in second place. Richard Christy won the contest. He joins the family right away and he'll be working for them for 3 months. A couple of women from Trim Spa came in after that. Richard Christy said 3 months ago he was digging ditches down in Florida and he never dreamed he'd be doing this. He left his band before they went to Europe and it was the toughest decision of his life. Sal said that he got Howard, Fred, Gary, Robin and Will's acceptance and that's all he wanted from this.
Next up we heard Sal talking about how it killed him that he lost to Richard but he was proud of what he had done during his week there. Sal said it made him feel real good. Then a week later Gary called him and said they were talking and they wanted him to come down to work for them for a month. Sal said he thought he was goofing on him but it turned out it wasn't a goof.
We heard Richard talking about how they hired Sal after he was there. He said they had a rivalry during the Win John's Job thing but he thought Sal was going to win because he had such a great week.
Tom Chiusano said that they did have money to hire another person so he told them they could bring in Sal if they wanted to. Richard talked about how he and Sal hit it off and they became beset friends. He said it was the best thing that could have happened.
In another Stern Show clip they played Sal and Tom fighting. Here's part of my rundown from September 14, 2004: Tom told Howard that he'll remember him when he leaves. Howard said he will forget about him as soon as he doesn't have to see him anymore. ''Out of sight, out of mind'' is what he told Tom. Howard was asking Tom to be nice to Sal the Stockbroker (HorseToothJackass.com) when he's around. They were being kind of cryptic but it sounds like Sal is working there. Tom told Howard that Sal told him that he was tired when he saw him. Tom said that he wasn't tired and he has more than enough energy for him. Sal came in and said that Tom is a dick and the sound of his voice makes his hand go into the shape of a fist. Sal thought that he was polite to Tom when he saw him. Tom held the elevator for him and then Sal picked on him about not having his tie tied. Sal claims that Tom rolled his eyes when he saw him heading toward the elevator. He also said something about him not wanting to be in the elevator with this guinea. Tom reminded him that he's Italian himself but Sal said that he's a douche bag. Tom didn't want to take that and walked out of the studio. This was Sal's first day there and he was probably going to get fired.
Howard told Sal to go out and apologize to Tom for what he'd just done. Artie was laughing and said that you have to treat him with kid gloves. Howard told Robin that Sal has been helping out around the show for the past couple of weeks but he's not a full time member of the staff. Howard was thinking that he might have to take a break and put out that fire.

Will Murray said that he remembers JD being very skinny when he started. He said now he's a big fatso. He said he was the one who gave him the ''Media Producer'' title. Will said that's stuck through the years. Gary said that JD had a knack for what he did. He said he was able to pull those clips. Will said he and Jason recognized that he would be great for the air. He said he remembers saying to Gary that they had to get him on the show. JD said then he got on air and he's sure he was nervous knowing that millions of people were listening to him. He said it was weird and it still is.
After that they played a clip from the Stern Show where they brought JD in as the virgin intern. Here's my rundown from June 17, 2003:
Robin also brought up Jamie the intern and asked Howard if they were going to talk to him about the crush he has on one of the girls they have working there. Robin said the girl knows that Jamie has a crush on her. Robin said the girl told her that Jamie asked her out to lunch. Howard said that was quite a move for him. Robin said the girl suggested that Jamie get a make over before that would happen. Jamie came in so Howard told him they were going to do a make over on him. He said he'd have Ralph do it for him. They also brought in the intern he has a crush on, Erica, and Howard told him she might be out of his league. Jamie said he hasn't had a lot of girlfriends in his life. Howard told him he doesn't have a very good personality. Gary said he's really nervous as well. The girl he's interested in said that Jamie needs some kind of pick-me-up. She said he needs contacts or maybe some more stylish glasses. Doug from E! said they can hook him up because he really is a mess. Gary said he might need some work done on his teeth as well. Howard told him he does need to stop smiling so much. He said he might have his girlfriend make him over. There were a few other things that Erica pointed out about him. Howard said Jamie is a diamond in the rough and in ten years he'll probably have girls all over him. Howard said they had a guy just like that years ago by the name of Adam. They helped him out and he was able to get all kinds of girls. Howard heard that Jamie was invited to Stuttering John's party and he didn't want to go because no one would talk to him. Jamie said that it was Ronnie who said something like ''What is he going to do, stand by a tree?'' when he heard he was invited. Jamie said he worked up the nerve to ask this girl out when he was leaving yesterday. They also found out he likes to high five girls as a greeting. Howard told Jamie that his name is too girl like so maybe he should be a James instead. Jamie said that Jamie is his real name but his father almost named him Jack which would have made him Jack Daniel.
Howard was trying to get Jamie to get some confidence and when he heard that Erica was interested in going to Scores, he told Jamie to take her there. Jamie said he might be interested in doing that but Howard told him to just go for it.
Howard took some phone calls for Jamie. One guy said that all ''she'' needs is some balls. Howard told him to stop smiling as well. Erica was also stuck on the fact that Jamie doesn't drink and hasn't even had a drink. Howard told Jamie that he actually works there at the station so interns should want to bang him. Adam told him to stop smiling as well. Howard said he heard he drives a girls car as well. Jamie said he drives a 1997 purple Neon. Everyone got a laugh out of that. The two of them are going to do lunch but Howard said they may do the make over before the lunch. Howard told Jamie to wear his contacts tomorrow. Adam suggested an eye patch. Robin said that Scott Peterson, who may have killed his wife, is getting mail from women who are fans of his. This poor guy Jamie can't even get a date. Howard told him that he needs to hang out at burn centers and abortion clinics. He said he just has to be nice to the women coming from abortion clinics who are there alone. Doug from E! said they'd even take his purple Neon to get it painted. Jamie said it's wrecked so it's kind of pointless. Adam told him to just take a chain to it instead.
Howard asked Erica how Jamie popped the question. She said he usually comes in and just says that he'll see her the next day. This time he popped in and stalled for a minute. She said she knew it was coming and then he asked her to lunch. She said of course she'd go to lunch with him. She told Howard she thinks he's a nice guy and he deserves the make over. Howard told her she's going to regret it if she doesn't date him now. He said in ten years she'll regret it because he's a really nice guy who treats people nice. Howard started to call him James but Robin suggested just shortening it to J.D. Since those are his initials.
Next up we heard JD talking about how he never did go out with Erica. Will Murray said JD has come out of his shell over the years. He said he's not that kid he was back then. He said as his body has expanded so has his personality. He said he busts his balls a lot and he loves doing that. He said JD doesn't take it as much as he used to. He said he has to be much more brutal with him now than he did back then. They wrapped up that segment and went to break after that.

A.J. Allen said that Howard's station managers were editing the show on their own. Robin talked about how the guy who sat on the dump button had nothing to do with the creation of the show. She said someone was taking it and changing it. She said it was difficult to created under those circumstances.
Tom Chiusano talked about the delay buttons he was on control of. He talked about the amount of time they could go back. He said he had 9 times worth of 3 second delays to go on.
They played a montage of clips of Howard going off on Tom and Andre for hitting the delay button and fans calling in and complaining about the delay hits.
After that A.J. Allen talked about how all of that intensified after the Wardrobe Malfunction at Super Bowl XXXVII. We heard Fred talking about how things changed after the Janet Jackson nipple thing. Fred said that they had a crackdown after that.
Ben and Ray Stern talked about the Janet Jackson thing too. Ben said if the FCC stuck to what they were supposed to they'd do much better.
Next up they played a news clip about the FCC hitting Howard Stern with a six figure fine. After that Richard Roeper talked about how people are going to look back on that whole thing and wonder what the big deal was. He said the FCC used the Janet Jackson thing as an excuse to go after people like Howard Stern. He said they were going backward while other people like Oprah were able to say whatever they wanted to because they were an ''educational'' show.
They played another news report about the FCC going after Howard Stern. Then we heard from Kathy Griffin who said that Howard paid the price for the Nipplegate thing more than Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake ever did. She said that Howard fought the fight and that's the kind of people we need.
They played Stern Show clip where Howard was holding a press conference on June 30, 2004. Here's my rundown from that day:
The Big Announcement... Howard Returning To Clear Channel Markets And Others! 06/30/04. 8:35am
Howard came back from break and said hello to the press he had there at the station. He talked about how he always gets bad mouthed when he's written about in the news and mentioned on TV. He said they never call President Bush a ''former drunk'' so he'd like a little respect as well. Howard went on to tell the group some history about his show. He has been doing his show for about 25 years and there has been a lot of controversy over those years. He stopped there and apologized to everyone for not having food there for the press. Then he got back to the controversy thing and how Janet Jackson's breast seems to be casing a lot of trouble. He said he doesn't think it has any effect on kids at all but everyone is blowing it out of proportion. After that the Government had to act and everyone freaked out, especially the FCC. Howard talked about Michael Powell and what they've been doing with billions of dollars in taxes that were supposed to be spent on computers for kids. He talked about that and then how all of these new fines are coming down on his show but nothing is being fined as far as the Janet Jackson thing.
Howard was kicked off of six Clear Channel radio stations a few months ago and he believes that it was all politically based. He went on the air after the Janet Jackson thing and criticized President Bush and the war and that's when Clear Channel gave him the boot. Once Clear Channel did that it had a chilling effect because he believes he was kicked off the air because of his political views. He said that it's a joke and a smoke screen saying that this is all about sex.
Howard has been getting very frustrated with what's been going on and he's threatened to resign a few times. He said that his own company doesn't know which way to turn because the FCC is going back 3 years finding shows to fine him over. Then there's this new indecency bill that is going to make it possible to fine individuals hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Howard has had satellite radio companies come to him and say that they want him. He would be allowed much more freedom on satellite which doesn't mean he'd be using the F-word all the time, he'd just be able to talk the way he wants. He still has 18 months left on his contract with Infinity so he doesn't know what the future will be with satellite.
Howard has been backed up by many people in his company and they believe that he's not doing anything indecent or obscene. He's heard from a lot of people in the company about their support and now they're showing it. Howard is going back on in the markets he was taken off in by Clear Channel and he's adding nine new stations to his affiliates.
Howard is not going to satellite at this point but it is possible when the FCC starts handing out personal fines when the new indecency bill passes. Howard said he's going to be back on in Pittsburgh, San Diego, West Palm Beach, Rochester and Orlando. Then he's adding new markets in Houston, Austin, Tampa and Fresno! Howard said he's not going to just sit back and take it while he's getting fined. He said that his show is having an effect on the election and this is going to help him spread the word around the country.
Next up on The History of Howard Stern Howard talked about a book where this guy talks about Lenny Bruce being persecuted and it's just like how he was persecuted on radio. Howard said they were telling Lenny not to talk about all of these things. He said Lenny was way ahead of his time and he was forced to fight for his rights to talk about this stuff. He said when you read this Lenny had to go on trial in front of a judge who was catholic and a jury full of Catholics. He said to that community of course that stuff was offensive. He said what's offensive to one person is another persons humor.
After that they played a Stern Show clip where Ben Stern called in to talk to Howard about his press conference. Here's some of my rundown from that day: Howard's father Ben called in to congratulate Howard on the press conference. He said that he was very proud of him and couldn't get over the way he handled himself. The way he spoke and made sense was very impressive to him. He asked for his old audio tapes back where he called Howard stupid. He now realizes that he wasn't. Fred played some of those clips to remind everyone about what he was talking about.
Howard said that his father wanted him to go into politics but it just wasn't meant to be. He thanked his father for the call because he knows that he's his toughest critic. Gary came in a minute later and said that the management at the company were impressed with the way Howard handled all of that stuff as well. They thought that it was scripted but it was actually off the top of his head.
Howard told his dad that the call meant a lot to him. It only took his father 50 years to compliment him. Howard asked him if he feels this whole thing is a witch hunt and if he thinks his son looks like a witch. Ben said he does look a little like a witch. Ben told Howard ''I love you'' as he was getting off the line so Howard found that to be another surprise. Howard asked him when that started and Ben said it was about 15 minutes before. Howard let Ben go a short time later.
Next up on History Tom Chiusano talked about how he used to describe the show as the movie The Blob. He said the blob got stronger and stronger until someone figured out a way to kill it. He said the FCC was like the electricity that killed the blob. They went to break after that.
Howard Stern talked about how excited he was to go to satellite. He said on terrestrial radio things were getting really bad. He said he was going to have to change a lot of things. Howard said they were doing a farting contest on the air on K-Rock and he loves farts. Howard said that Tom came to them and said he had to edit out most of the farts. He said Tom told him that they were ''too wet'' and it sounded like they were going to shit. Howard said it was the punch line to the joke and they edited it out. Howard said he couldn't stand that the audience thought they weren't funny anymore because the funny parts were being edited out. Howard said he knew it was a recipe for disaster. Howard said the ratings kept going higher and higher though. Howard said he though that it was going to crumble eventually. Howard said you can't keep messing with the essence of the show like that. He said it has to be done the right way. Howard said everything was an issue. He said he was going to leave terrestrial radio either way. He said he was just done. He said he didn't feel funny anymore.
They played a clip of Howard making his big announcement about signing with Sirius. Here's my rundown from that day:
Howard Moving To Sirius Satellite Radio In 2006! 10/06/04. 8:20am
Howard moved on to talk about this big announcement he's been talking about all morning. Gary said that the rumors were flying back in the office but Howard didn't want him to talk about what they were saying yet. Howard went on to play tape of a news report where they talk about the fines that the FCC have been coming out with lately. It aired on CBS news. Howard's name was mentioned and he said he's sick and tired of that. His show has become the largest, most popular radio show in the world. He believes that it is the most important radio show in the history of radio. He talked about how he knew he wanted to change the way people listened to radio when he was a young man. He was happy making $250 a week doing radio the way he wanted to do it. He wanted to be free on the air to talk the way he wanted. He didn't want to use curse words, he just wanted to speak freely.
Right now there is a bill sitting on the President's desk that will allow the government to fine individuals for indecent broadcasts. This has made Howard think about what he wants to do with his career when his contract is up in 15 months. He believes that his career in radio is pretty much done but he's made his mark. Viacom has supported him through all of this stuff while Clear Channel backed down and caved into the pressure. He said that Leslie Moonves has been good to him since Mel Karmazin left the company and they're good people there. He said he's felt weird about what's been going on with the government and Michael Powell. The stuff they're doing on radio now is not risky because they have delay's on all of his affiliate stations.
Howard said that the radio show has been the biggest thing in his life and he was ''at one'' with radio for most of his life. He sat down at a meeting with his agent recently and told him he's done with radio. It's not an issue with money, he just doesn't want to do it anymore. It's not fun. He said he told him he's ready to leave it because it doesn't matter to him. It can only get worse for him, not better. He's had to prove himself over and over again by syndicating his show and he believes that he showed the industry how to keep radio relevant. He's very proud that they were able to do that.
Howard said he as really down and didn't want to do radio but someone approached him to do something spectacular. He said that Sirius Satellite Radio asked to talk to him. They talked to him about what they were building for the future and he listened to them. He wasn't convinced to go to satellite. He would have to take himself off the air from terrestrial radio and move to something new. He was offered a new 5 year contract with Viacom but he doesn't think he can do it while his show is constantly censored. He would have to rebuild his career on satellite so he had to think seriously about that. He believes that if he does that, it would show that satellite radio has arrived. He believes in satellite now and believes that it is the future of radio.
Howard says he's been agonizing for months about this satellite radio thing. Two days ago he signed a contract with Sirius Satellite radio and he will be moving to Sirius satellite radio in 2006 when his current contract is up. He wants his team of people to come with him over there of course. Howard said he had to think about that for a long time and he didn't tell anyone there at Viacom that he was going to be leaving. The deal is done and he will definitely be leaving this type of radio in 2006. He will dedicate his time to making satellite radio great. They are giving Howard 3 channels to program and he will be dealing with people he believes can help the satellite industry great.
Howard can't go on in some states in this country because of what the FCC has done to him. He is now putting his money where his mouth is and he will be pushing satellite radio like crazy. He says this has lit a new fire within him and the day he signed that contract, he has been on fire. The show has been different for him the past couple of days since he signed that contract with Sirius. The people at Sirius believe that this is what the satellite business needs to make it legitimate.
Next on History A.J. Allen introduced Jeff Probst. Jeff said when Howard announced he was going to satellite it was a game changer. He said he wondered what they were going to change when they came back on the air. He said there were times when he'd be listening on terrestrial and bits and pieces would get cut from the show. He said now they'd be able to hear it all.
Sarah Silverman talked about being nervous that it might be the beginning of the end. She said it turned out to be the beginning of the beginning for the best era of the Howard Stern Show. Sarah said no one other than Howard foresaw it being the best ever. She said what makes it better than ever is that the show it totally free. She said she wondered if Howard needed the FCC to be the rebel or not. She said the answer is no. She said he got what he wanted and he's better than ever.
Next up they played a news report about Howard's final day on terrestrial radio. They were down at the station where fans were gathering to say goodbye.
After that Howard's sister Ellen talked about how happy she was for Howard that day. She said he was so upset about his whole situation there. She said he finally got his freedom. She said when Howard is happy, she's happy.
Beth stern talked about how many emotions were going through Howard that day. She said moving to the Sirius studios was one of the most magical times for him. She said she remembers riding in the van with him that day. She said it was just magical and so cool. She said she was so excited to be there with him at that time in his life.
Ray Stern talked about that last day on K-Rock. She said that Tom Chiusano was so sad faced. She said she got the feeling about what the people he worked with were feeling. Tom Chiusano said it was a really sad day for him. He said that he was really emotional. He said he cried. Tom said he went in his office and sat and thought about it. He said it was the end of an era in his life. He said he was sad to see it go. Ray Stern talked about how they were sad to see him go. She said that people loved Howard over there. She said they may have to clone Howard.
Next up they played a Stern Show clip from Howard's final day at K-Rock on December 16, 2005. Howard was getting ready to go outside to say his final goodbyes.
After that we heard from Gary Dell'Abate who said that final show outside was a blur to him. He said that what bothers him the most is that he didn't get to be a part of the radio show. He said he was on the street doing stuff for the show. He said they went to the Hard Rock and things like that. Gary said they were leaving something that they had done for a really long time.
They played another Stern Show clip from that final broadcast when Howard made his appearance out on the street with the fans. Here's my rundown of those final moments:
Howard's Final Speech. 12/16/05. 9:35am
At around 9:35 in the morning Howard was brought up on stage to make his final terrestrial radio speech. They brought him up to his movie soundtrack song ''American Nightmare.'' He got a few ''Hey Now''s from the crowd and started to make his speech. He said that he loves the crowd and asked them if any of them work anymore. The crowd all said ''No!''
Howard made his speech but the delay was hit a few times. People in the crowd may have been cursing. He went on to talk about the past 20 years and how they've done it all. He talked about an article he read where they said he was the last of a dying breed because the religious right is taking over the airwaves. Howard said he's not going to bow down to that though, he's leaving FM radio so he can once again be free to do the broadcast he wants to do.
Howard said that the fans out there today were the real last of a dying breed because he doesn't think there will ever be another radio show like this or another audience like that. He said congratulations to them and told them that they're all a part of history today. He thanked everyone for being in his corner for all of these years and talked about how the support of the fans have allowed him to make his show what it's become today. He said that they've stood their ground over the years even after all of the things that have happened with fines and stuff like that.
Howard reminded the crowd about some of the things that have gone on with the show over the years where they battled other radio guys and beat them down. He brought up the ''dying breed'' thing a few times and thanked the crowd multiple times for being there for him. He brought up a few more things that happened on the show over the years and how there's no way that this radio show will ever be duplicated.
Howard went through many of the great moments from the show but there were still multiple delay button hits. It may have been the cursing coming from the crowd though. He thanked the crowd one more time for the past 20 years of shows and talked about how the ride isn't over yet, it's just beginning. Five more years of Howard Stern... uncensored. He said they'll never bow to the government, the FCC or the religious right.
Howard told the crowd that he's beat the government at their own game and that's what they'll show when they move to satellite. He pointed out that many of the crowd were wearing his new fist logo and he wanted to take that fist and shove it up Clear Channel. As he was talking about that the delay was hit a few more times.
Howard thanked his fans for coming out to his book signings over the years. He thanked them for the support they gave him over the years for his channel 9 show, his movie, his books, his CDs and video tapes too. He thanked his family for putting up with his career. He talked about his three children and how they had to put up with a lot. He thanked his parents and his girlfriend too. Howard said that he's very lucky to have the fans that he does and then asked Infinity Broadcasting to let him have his tapes.
Howard thanked Gary, Fred, Artie and Robin for being there for him as well. Scott the Engineer also got a thank you even though he screws up things for him. He thanked Sal, Richard, JD, Ronnie, Tom Chiusano and others. The delay was hit a couple more times during that speech. He thanked Cabbie for his revelations over the years and thanked Hank the Dwarf for what he did on the show.
Howard thanked the cast of ''Private Parts,'' the many comedians who have been on the show like Jim Florentine, Rev. Bob Levy and others. He thanked the board ops who worked on his show for years, the E! crew, all of the strippers, Zolar, Joey Boots, High Pitch Eric, Al Rosenberg, Hook Nose Mike, Debbie the Queefer, Rocky the Crack Whore, Bobo, Kenneth Keith Kallenbach, Clif Pallete, Jeff the Drunk, Double A, Mariann from Brooklyn, George Takei, Shuli and others. He tried to thank as many people as he could remember. There were many people standing in the crowd that he thanked. He also thanked the New York City cops who were there this morning keeping the crowd under control.
Howard said he was dedicating this last show to Sgt. Keith Manning who is in the military over in Iraq. He said that he's another one of the Dying Breed. Howard said a few more thanks to the fans who have kept him going every day. He's going to keep entertaining people every day when he makes his move. He gave a final F-Jackie and thanked the crowd one last time as they ended the show at about 10:00am. The crowd chanted Howard's name as they played him out with ''Tortured Man'' from the ''Private Parts'' soundtrack.
Next on History Fred Norris talked about how he had no idea this was going to go on so long. He said he doesn't know what he'd be doing now if it hadn't. He said he's lucky to be able to do what he does for the best show on the dial.
Robin Quivers talked about how they realized how much stress they were under once they were free of that. She said they were free to say whatever they wanted on satellite. She said that it freed them in a way that they couldn't have understood before they got there. Robin said the last 10 years has been a pleasure. Robin said that they just think about giving you the best programming they can possibly do. She said it's been fantastic for them.
Howard Stern talked about how it's been the best gamble in broadcast history. He said he had a successful career in terrestrial radio. He said that he was ready to build something new and people were betting against them. He said they proved those people wrong again. Howard said people thought it was just going to be him saying dirty words and it wasn't going to be funny. Howard said the 10 years there have been a great validation of what they do. Howard said his audience is very loyal. He said it's been a fantastic experiment and it's allowed him to grow. Howard said he loves the guests he's had and the musical acts he's had perform. Howard said it's meant everything. He said some might say it's the best radio his group has done so far. Howard said there's a lot to look forward to. He said history is still being written. They ended the show after that.
Jon said they heard Dave Grohl doing Everlong in the studio and that changed everything for them. Gary said that really was Howard's idea too. He said that Dave wasn't up for doing it and he wasn't sure it if would sound good. He said that Dave says that performance changed his life. Jon said that it was a very special moment.
Jon said today they had Jackie saying goodbye too. Gary said he knew it was final before Jackie even knew it was final. He said Jackie may have thought he was still negotiating but he knew it was over. He said Tom Chiusano told him months in that Jackie's agent called. He said they were already done with him at the time though.
Horatio said Artie was great when he came in there. He said you wonder if they'll have good chemistry and Artie did. He said They had good chemistry. He said Jackie was funny but not the kind of guy he'd go see in a club. He said Artie became a huge part of the show.
Jon said it's the timing that you have with Howard. Gary said they had a lot of guys sit in. He said the thing with Artie was that Artie was still out staying up all night and then coming into work. He said that he always brought a story in that made it worth it. He said Howard was fascinated with those stories. Jon said that one of the stories they had today was the Win John's Job with Richard and Sal getting spots on the show. Gary said that was a very creative time and he loves having Richard and Sal there. He said they were great to work with when they were there.
Jon said they also got to know JD Harmeyer in the show today. Horatio said he's been corrupted and he's an evil that's forced to be kind. He said he may not be evil but he's working on it.
Jon said the thing that really did it for Howard on terrestrial radio was the Janet Jackson nipple thing. Gary said they had all kinds of new rules after that. He said it was interesting to see the hysteria that came out of that. He said that really did drive them to satellite radio. He said it was interesting because Howard announced he was going to satellite and they didn't fire him. He said that you usually quit a job and they escort you out of the building. He said they stayed for 14 months and talked about where they were going.
Jon said it was weird because K-Rock was no more but they had no idea what it was going to be like on Sirius. Horatio said it was weird when they first got there and they could curse. He said they didn't have to worry about jokes being handled in the right way. He said it really worked out.
Jon said when they got to Sirius Howard kind of relaxed. He said beforehand they had the button and all of those rules. He said that Howard has been happy there because of that freedom. Gary said he's heard rumblings that they wanted Howard back on terrestrial. He said it just can't be done.
Jon said the History of Howard Stern concluded with Howard's final terrestrial broadcast. Jon said it was sad in a way but people were really happy because the best was yet to come. Gary said they were leaving something behind that they did for 20 years. He said he felt that the fans would follow. He said they left behind 50 cities and they weren't sure how that was going to work. Jon said now it's over 20 million listeners there. Gary said it's 30 now.
Horatio said the show seems so different now than it was 15 years ago. He said that he doesn't have to worry about the material. He said he'd imagine it's pretty easy to work there. Gary said there is no Tom there. He said they are basically their own boss. He said there is no suit telling Howard what to do. He said that sucked the life out of the show back when that was happening. Horatio said that was kind of fun for the listeners when that stuff was going on. Gary said it really took its toll on Howard though.
Jon wrapped up and ended the show after that. They were done around 12:10pm.
