Jim Forbes came on and talked about that first fine and how it was $6,000. Robin talked about how the FCC is supposed to be going after stations that were using too strong of a signal and not fining over what people say. She said it created a situation for them that no one ever expected. She said they were always trying to find ways to get attention for the show and the FCC gave that to them but not the way they wanted. Jim said that led to Howard putting out his first box set, Crucified by the FCC.
Howard came on and talked about some equipment he had in his basement and how he edited together some of that box set. We heard a clip from the show where Howard talked about working on that box set and telling the audience that he was going to be putting it out for the fans. In the clip Howard talked about how it was a CD or cassette set and it had the saga of the FCC and bits that had been banned from the air.
Next we heard Howard talking about how pissed off at the FCC he was and how he had to turn it into something good. We heard some of the Crucified by the FCC after that featuring Judy Tenuta getting into an argument with a caller and cursing.
We heard from Tom Chiusano next. He was talking about the Crucified by the FCC box set and how they pulled the audio from the tapes that weren't edited. Robin also talked about how Howard was dressed in robes on the cover of the box set and how that may have upset some people. She said it was interesting to get the fan reaction for something that they'd actually buy. Howard said he thought the audience would like that and he figured it was something substantial and not like a t-shirt that so many other radio guys put out. He said he's always said that he would put out something of substance and not rip off the audience.
Next up was a clip from the show where Howard took a call about the Crucified by the FCC box set and a caller was saying that he wasn't going to buy it because it would end up at a store for $19.95. Howard said that wasn't going to happen. He said he's not going to sell it for less. Howard told the caller he was a creep and went off on him about that. Howard said the guy was calking him dishonest and said he hopes he dies. The caller said he lies to the public so Howard banned him from listening to the show.
Jim Forbes introduced Artie Lange who had gotten one of those box sets when he was just a fan of the show. Artie talked about the set and how much crap Howard had to go through in those early days and what a ballsy thing it was for him to put that set out. He said he's always admired that.
We heard more of the Crucified by the FCC set where Howard was talking to a woman about winning some Joe Jackson tickets if she kept having sex over the phone. Another clip was where Howard and Gary were talking about a bit that had to come out of the show and how Howard actually decided to take it out before Tom did. They had a woman on the show talking about fucking her dog while they were out in Los Angeles doing some shows. They played that clip as well.
Gary came on and talked about how they picked the stuff for that box set. He said they went for the racier moments and the stuff they got fined for. Gary said there were things that Infinity told them not to play so that's what ended up on there as well.
We heard from Dee Snider about the Penis Ping Pong segment that he was part of. He said he was pulled into the Homo Room and played the imaginary game of Penis Ping Pong. He said they made jokes about that and it got banned. They played that clip from the box set next. We heard Dee and Howard in the Homo Room playing the Penis Ping Pong game.
Next up was Fred talking about Howard wanting to bid on the Elephant Man bones along with Michael Jackson and how they called London to ask about doing that. They didn't take it to well out there according to Fred. That led to them playing the London phone call from the box set. In the call Howard was asking a British woman if he could bid on it and she was asking if it was some kind of joke. Howard told her he was serious about it.
Jim Forbes talked about how Howard went on the Tom Snyder Show to promote that box set and how strange that turned out to be. They played some of Howard talking about that upcoming appearance on the radio show. We also heard from current day Howard talking about that appearance. Howard's mom and dad also talked about it and how Tom Snyder didn't handle it very well. Ralph Cirella was there that day too so we heard from him about what went on. Ralph talked about how Tom Snyder had already spoken out about how he didn't like Howard before that interview. Howard also talked about how he may have overreacted to that appearance and how it wasn't as bad as he remembers it.
They played that interview with Tom Snyder that was supposed to have been Howard and Bob Costas talking. Howard and Tom went back and forth both trying to control the interview. They argued about some of the stuff Howard has done on his show and Tom admitted he's a little out of touch with what's popular on radio and TV. At one point Howard said it was like two mental patients arguing. He tried to plug his box set but NBC censored out the phone number.
Current Howard came on and talked about how they blocked out that number on that show. He said he wasn't looking to be on that show if he couldn't promote something. He said that really pissed him off. He said that interview turned out to be people's favorites and he's not sure why he got so upset about it now that he's heard it years later. He said it wasn't so bad.
We heard more of the Tom Snyder interview where Tom was talking about how Howard had made his life tough on his radio show. Tom complained to Howard about that and Howard said he didn't think people really took it that seriously. The interview goes on and on with the two of them arguing about Howard's radio show and whether or not it's dangerous.
Next we heard a radio show clip where Howard and Robin were talking about the Tom Snyder interview. Howard discussed why Tom was such a jackass. He said he was a befuddled old man.
We heard another Tom Snyder show clip where he was telling a joke about Howard and laughing at his own stupid joke.
Jim Forbes said that Howard had found a new friend in Leonard Marshall around that time too. We heard from Leonard who was saying that he fit right in on the show. Robin talked about how well he fit in on the show and how much fun they had talking to him about his interracial marriage since they didn't know much about sports. Howard talked about how fascinated he was with Leonard and his wife and what that must have been like. He said he was fascinated with race and with couples who have any kind of adversity in their life. He said Leonard would talk about anything on the show too. Leonard talked about the great times they had and how Howard saw a different side of him.
They played a clip from the show where Howard called Leonard Marshall for the first time. His wife picked up first. Howard got Leonard on the phone and talked to him about his white wife after seeing a picture of her in Leonard's book. They talked about what it's like to have a white wife and stuff like that.
Jim Forbes said that in 1991 Howard and Leonard made a bet on a game. Leonard talked about that bet and said that he tried to convince Howard they were going to win. They went into a radio show clip where Howard told Leonard he bet him on that game just to get him fired up. Howard and Leonard made another bet and Howard said if he won the game and he calls in the Monday after he would get on TV or radio and pull down his pants and kiss his big, black ass as many points as he scores. Howard said Leonard had to kiss his big, black ass if he lost or he would get 9 minutes in a closet with his wife. Leonard just wanted to go to dinner. Howard said that was no fun though. Howard said he wasn't going to wipe all week and give Leonard a smelly ass to kiss if he lost. Leonard said he'd do the same thing.
Next up was Robin talking about that bet and how he never imagined that he'd have to pay up. Jim said that Marshall sealed the deal that weekend. They had a clip from that game where Marshall took Joe Montana down. We heard from Leonard about how he knew Howard was going to have to pay off that bet. He said he knew that Joe Montana was done for the day after he took him down.
They played a clip from the show where Howard was talking about how he was going to have to kiss Leonard's black ass. Howard said Leonard played great and he figures he played so well because he didn't want to kiss his ass.
We heard from current day Gary who was saying that it was a quick kiss on the ass but Howard did what he said he was going to do. Leonard said he didn't pull his pants down but he did eat some stuff that made him fart all morning. He said the whole thing wasn't staged and they just had a great time working together on that kind of stuff.
They played a clip from the show where Howard did that ass kissing bit. Howard was out in front of a bunch of people live to do the ass kissing. Howard planted that kiss on the huge ass of Leonard Marshall in public. Howard cursed Abe Lincoln for becoming President an freeing the slaves. He said if he hadn't done that he wouldn't be there making a fool of himself. They went to break after that.

Current day Howard talked about how more guarded Robin seems to be these days than she was before. He said that she has been very revealing but she gets closed off when it comes to certain people. He said that she will talk about meats and vegetables and not being good at blow jobs. He said she's pretty open about that, you just have to get her going.
They had another older radio show bit where Howard was asking Robin about masturbation and how she does that. The guys were all getting worked up thinking about that. Howard asked if it just happened or if she planned it. Robin said it wasn't planned. She said she did have her vibrator.
Next up we heard from William Shatner who was talking about Robin and how she's there to egg people on and she does her job very well. Howard was also talking about Robin's role on the show and how she kind of defined it herself. He said that he never told her what to do when it came to being open on the air. He said that she can be as open as she wants to be or not be open. He said he never sat her down and told her what to do like that. He said the dynamic of the show is him and Robin talking to each other and he needed someone to react to what he was saying.
They played more of the masturbation segment where Howard was asking Robin for details about what she does. Robin said she doesn't read dirty books. She said she has a good imagination. Howard said he'd love to be a fly on the wall in that apartment. She talked about using the Magic Wand as a vibrator. Howard told her she might need therapy for using that thing. He said that's a jackhammer of a vibrator. He described what it looks like and how big the head of the thing is. She said that hers didn't have the big ball on it, it has a saddle-like attachment on it. She and Howard went back and forth talking about how that thing works. Howard has a Swedish Massager that he uses. Howard said he had no idea Robin would be into that Magic Wand thing. Howard asked where she could put that big ball. She told him to use his imagination.
They played a clip where Howard talked about the new program director Tim Sabean or Tim Kelly as he was known in some places. Howard said that maybe Tim should have just kept his name Tim Kelly if that was his real name. Robin said she thought he changed it from Kelly to Sabean but Howard said his real name is Tim Sabean.
They played some audio of Fred and Tim talking about that ''Tim Kelly'' name. Tim said that he didn't know why they were changing his name but that's that they did when he got on the air. Howard said Tim Kelly was the worst name and the most unoriginal name he'd ever heard.
Tim Sabean talked about meeting Howard for the first time when they were working together at WYSP. Tim said he went up to K-Rock to meet him and the show was really on a roll at the time. He said Howard busted his chops about being out in Hawaii on vacation at the time. He said Howard put him right on the spot.
They played some audio from that first day when Tim met Howard on the air at K-Rock. Howard brought Tim in and said he didn't want to meet him off the air. Howard said they bring in a new dick every few months to tell him what to do and he hates that. Tim came into the studio and met Howard for the first time. Tim said they're going to get along great and he loves Howard more than his own family. They had Steve Sachs in the studio at the time too. Tim told Howard he'd like to get the audience involved in the station more and that's how he's going to help make the show number 1 in Philly. Howard told him to click his heels together three times and get the hell out of there.
They played a clip of Howard talking to Mike on the air after he had been sick. He had a horrible voice and told Howard he wanted to be on the air some day.
Gange talked about how Howard tried to have him do a talk up of a Van Halen song and it just didn't go well. He said it became the ultimate rip session when Howard did that to him. He said his college professor tried to call in and help him but it didn't work. He said Howard ruined the whole thing for him so he never did get into radio.
They played the audio from that segment where Howard had Mike talking up a Van Halen song. Mike did the talk up but he didn't have much to say. Howard started doing an impression of his voice right after that. He told Gange he needed a different voice and a different name.
They threw in a Larry King clip where a caller threw out Howard's name. That led to Jim talking about some of the Baba Booey phony phone calls that Billy West made. We heard Billy talking about those calls and how much fun they were and how they were like things you'd do as a teenager. He said it was fun to do that kind of stuff. Billy said he loved those calls.
Gary talked about how funny Billy was and how he was always being pranked in the office. He remembered the Barbara Booey prank call and how he had a cousin by the name of Barbara so he was fooled that day.
They played the audio from the show where Howard played those Baba Booey prank calls that Billy made to Gary. Billy would call in as ''Bob.. a Booey'' and things like that. Billy called Gary a bunch of times and you could hear Howard and Fred telling Billy what to say the next time he called in. In one clip Billy asked Gary about getting an internship. Gary got excited because he was looking for someone. Then Billy says he was referred by this guy Bob... and Gary finished the sentence saying ''Baba Booey...'' Gary said that one was so cruel because he was really looking for someone as an intern.
In the clip we heard Howard playing more of the prank calls and the guys laughing their asses off as they were doing it. Next up was the Barbara Booey prank when Billy said his name was Barbara as he was doing a female voice. Gary got on the phone when he heard it was a Barbara on the line. He thought it was his cousin. Billy kept him going for a few seconds before telling him it was ''Barbara... Barbara Who? Barbara Booey.'' The guys were all laughing their asses off at that.
Next up was Jim Forbes talking about another prank call where Gilbert Gottfried and Howard teamed up to make a prank call to Jerry Seinfeld. They played some audio of Gilbert talking about that call and then played the original segment from March of 1991 when Gilbert and Howard made that prank call to Jerry.
In the clip Howard called Jerry to leave a message on his machine and Gilbert was doing his Seinfeld impression. Gilbert did that impression as Howard was asking him questions. They left a message on his machine that went on and on until his machine ran out of time. They planned to do a whole radio show for Jerry since his machine didn't seem to have an end to it. Howard was going to end the call but Gilbert kept doing his Seinfeld voice so they just kept going. Howard said it was hard to hang up without that beep on the machine. He said he couldn't stop. He figured it was a 60 minute cassette with 30 minutes on each side. They kept going and Gilbert was doing his jokes as Jerry the whole time. The machine ran out of time eventually and gave them the beep. Howard said that was enough after that beep.
Next up they played a clip where Jerry Seinfeld came on the show and talked about that answering machine message. Jerry wasn't sure what that was all about. Jerry said he never said ''who are these people'' or ''so hey'' like they do when they make fun of him. Howard did some of his impression of Jerry and goofed on him. Jerry said they did a bit on Saturday Night Live that appeared it was supposed to be him one time. Howard asked Jerry about the answering machine message and how much fun they had talking into that answering machine message. Jerry said he was at the airport when he heard that message. He said the machine had to rewind and rewind. Howard said Gilbert loves to do his voice and he thinks he's great. Jerry didn't think it was that great. Howard said he thinks it's the best. Jerry said he was going to start doing the impression of Howard doing him. He said that was going to be the end of him if he started that. Howard said he wished Gilbert was there because they'd have so much fun. They went to break after that.
Fred said that Howard found that whole thing humorous and he demeaned him on the air with the whole thing. Fred said it was ice cream and who doesn't love ice cream? Howard said he wants to cringe when he hears some of these clips. He said Fred has really blossomed over the years since he met his wife. He said he still thought Cookie Puss was an appropriate gift for his mother though. They threw in a clip of the old Carvel commercial featuring Cookie Puss doing that electronic voice thing that Howard has done over the years. Howard said if Fred's reaction wasn't so strong he wouldn't have kept it up.
They played a show clip where Howard was goofing on Fred about the Cookie Puss gift. Howard said Fred loves his mother and he used to go see her every weekend. He's started to blow them off since he found Princess Norris. Howard said he knew Fred was lying to him back in the day. He said he knows Fred used to lie to him about having to go out there to help mow the lawn. Fred started to do an impression of Howard to get back at him. Howard didn't think it was that entertaining but Jackie did. Howard told Fred to write something down and submit it to him after the show. Fred said he does that.
All of that stuff led into Howard asking about the Cookie Puss thing again. Howard asked Scott to hook him up with his Cookie Puss voice so he could talk to Fred in that voice. Howard went into the voice and asked Fred some questions about the Cookie Puss ice cream cake. Howard was trying to get the story straight so he could figure it all out. Cookie Puss was talking about Fudgie the Whale and asking Fred why he didn't get that instead. He was also saying he wished he had a better name than Cookie Puss. He said it would have been better if it was Rambo or something.
Robin wasn't sure what the cake looked like so Fred said it looked like a light bulb. They use the same mold for different cakes at Carvel. Howard continued to goof on Fred about the Cookie Puss thing and told him he should get her cotton candy for his mom next time. Howard did an impression of Fred's mom a little bit too. Howard said Cookie Puss had to leave and run out of the studio during the break. He was afraid to stay in the room with Fred.
After that we heard Jackie talking about the Cookie Puss moment and how it could drag on and on like other things on the show. Jackie said that when he first started on the show he'd walk in and talk about his wife and that would end up on the air. He said he finally learned to shut the hell up. He said that he can't imagine why Fred told anyone he got his mom a Cookie Puss for her birthday. Jackie said they got a lot of mileage out of that bit. He said it would get Fred mad and whenever he was mad it was good radio... always.
They played another segment from the radio show where Howard went into his Cookie Puss voice to goof on Fred. Howard, as Cookie Puss, was saying that she must have been destroyed when she saw that cake. Howard got out of the voice after a short time.
That all led into a clip where Howard talked about how he used to get high and try to get laid while his parents weren't home. He said he would drink booze out of his father's liquor cabinet. He said he was good at hiding that stuff. He said he would go through his father's sock drawer to find his rubbers and he'd put one on just to play with himself. Jackie said he never did that. Fred didn't either. Gary came in and said that he did it once and thought he was just a wacky kid. Howard said he did it a lot of times. He said it got him excited. Howard said he was paranoid the rest of the day after doing that. He was worried his father would figure out that he had taken them.
Howard was also talking about buying pot and how his mother would be out of the house so he'd drink and smoke there. He said if he got a girl there he would make them apricot sours. He said he used to give the chicks pot and they'd smoke it in the house while he'd smoke out in the garage. Howard also told the story about being with the girl who wanted to call her boyfriend so she could go home. She was crying and upset when he didn't know what he was doing and needed some help guiding him in.
Next up we heard Jackie talking about how farts, piss and shitting is funny stuff and it's a cheap place to go when you're trying to be funny. He said the gloves were always off when they'd talk about that kind of stuff. Jackie said that Howard would fart into the microphone and stuff and then you'd realize you had to speak into it after that.
That led into a clip from the show where Howard talked about farting in the car with Robin while they were on their way out to an appearance. They talked about why Howard farts so much and why he gets so gassy after eating lunch. Howard said he thinks his buttocks swallows air while he's eating. Howard said he has a problem with the farts but not for himself, it's the people around him. He said he likes to fart at night and trap them in there. He puts his head under to smell them because he loves his own smell.
Howard explained how they were on their way to Maguire Air Force Base when he ripped the fart in front of Robin. He said he can't hold them in because he doesn't have fun doing that. He warned her that he was going to do that. He stuck his ass out the window of the limo. They were moving so fast that the fart smell came right back into the car. That led to Jackie talking about how he used to piss in bottles while he was driving so he didn't have to stop. Howard wondered how he managed to do that without spilling. Jackie said he got very good at doing it. Jackie once poured one of those bottles out the car window and it got on his mother who was sitting in the back seat. They went over that story in detail. They also talked about Jackie's father taking a dump in a dresser drawer one time. Jackie said he has to ask his mom about that story and if she remembers telling him that one.
They played a clip from the show where Howard read some faxes from the fans who were telling them to take it easy on Fred. Fred ended up leaving in the middle of that. Jackie said he was checking on his space ship. Jackie said that it takes up 3 meters. Robin said Fred apparently takes that stuff out on the interns when he leaves the studio. Howard said it would be great if they had a Twilight Zone episode where everyone is goofing on Fred about being from Mars and they don't know that he actually is from Mars and he's taking people home to his planet to be eaten by his people. Fred came back in and said that he didn't like this conversation. Howard said it had nothing to do with him. He said he'd love to tape a real episode where that's what happens. He said that he'd like to write that episode but Fred wasn't willing to help. Fred was getting mad at Jackie and said he thinks that he's got some real anger there. Fred started to tell Howard he was a jerk off and yelled at him as Howard was making fun of him.
Jim Forbes said that Fred had a debate about wether or not Carol Alt was a super model or not. We heard from Fred on that too. Fred said he can't claim credit for that. He said he may have been having a discussion about someone and her name may have come up and he may not have even been the one who said she wasn't a super model. He wasn't going to say what he really thinks of her since she is a friend of the show. Gary said that she is the original super model and they'd talk about that on the show whenever she was on.
That led into a clip from the show where Gary was talking about Carol doing the show over satellite instead of coming in live. Howard said he'd rather look at her in the studio but he would talk to her over satellite. That led to Robin saying that Fred didn't think she was a super model. Fred named some other people who were super models in his opinion. He had his own criteria for what makes one.
They played a clip from the first time Carol Alt appeared in the studio. Howard told Fred to leave the room. Howard was impressed with her looks. Carol talked about how it was just opinion about what makes a super model. Howard apologized to Carol for Fred's behavior. He asked Fred why it was that she wasn't a super model. Fred tried to explain it but they kept cutting him off. Fred refused to give her super model status. He said he's not sure what the criteria was but Carol was claiming that she had been on 600 magazine covers. Howard said he thought she was a super model and he's not sure why Fred is so obsessed.
We heard from Gary about the whole Carol Alt thing and how it's gone on for a long time. Fred said that he thinks that she bribes people to put ''super model'' next to her name when she's mentioned on the web. Scott the Engineer said that Fred knows how to push buttons and he keeps it going with Carol because it's so easy. Ronnie the Limo Driver said that he's not sure if she's a super model either. He said she's a nice lady but not a super model. He said maybe back in the day she was. They had some audio of Carol talking about it as well and how she got to see how many people were listening to Howard Stern when they'd come to her and talk about that. She said it's incredible the amount of power the show has. They went to break after that.
Mel Karmazin talked about how Howard wanted to be on in Los Angeles and he wanted him to help. Don Buchwald said that he went to talk to Mel about this and he did this presentation to him and Mel told him to go fuck himself. He said Mel said that would be over his dead body. Don said he likes Mel and he didn't want to step over his dead body.
Mel said that Infinity owned a station in Los Angeles that was very strong out there and they didn't want to mess with it. Don said that he told Mel they could work together or Howard could just move out there. He said Mel didn't think they'd be able to find a station that would take Howard out there. Don said they found one the day after he tried. We heard from Andy Bloom who was a program director out there at that time. He talked about how the deal went down and how it all came together.
They played an old show clip of Howard talking about the new station they were going to be on in Los Angeles and how people were speculating on where they were going. He said he had organized everything to work out. He said it was going to be like the end of the Godfather with him rising up at the end. He said he's working on stuff behind the scenes that people don't even know about. Howard said he was busy orchestrating all of this stuff and no one even knows about it. He said that they will be traipsing through Los Angeles and Mark and Brian would be dead soon. Their careers would be over. He gave them a few more weeks of being number 1 before they came to town. He said he wasn't even going to lift a finger and they would be all gone. He said he had representatives out in L.A. talking to people the day before.
Next we heard Robin talking about the big news of being syndicated there in L.A. and how they had heard about the lame shows that were going on out there. She said they were outraged that they were doing lame shows and getting TV shows while they were stuck in New York. She said it was time to show everyone where people were getting their show ideas from. Gary said Howard would always complain about people stealing their show ideas and how they had no way of letting the people out there know where it all came from. Gary said Howard knew they could pull it off even with the time difference. Billy West also said that Howard knew that they could beat them and it was like having a nuclear weapon with Howard on the station. Howie Mandel also chimed in on this and he said he thinks Howard broke the rules and blazed a trail that no one else did.
They played a clip of Howard making the announcement about being syndicated into Los Angeles and giving out the information about the station they were going to be on. Howard said it finally happened and his dream has come true. He said they were going to start the week after they returned from vacation. Howard said he was hyper ventilating just talking about it. He figured they'd have 5-6 million followers by that morning. He said it was a huge deal for them. He told Fred that some day they would broadcast to Mars as well. He said he knew that was Fred's dream.
Next up we heard Tom Chiusano talking about the new markets coming on board and how it was pretty seamless when they'd bring them on board. He said that Howard would find someone to fight with and he would get press from that. Howard said that he would lose sleep when people thought that he was doing a Mark and Brian type of show when he was the one who developed that kind of radio show. He said the whole idea of people doing his kind of show. He said he'd get pissed when he heard that Mark and Brian were doing their own TV show and things like that. He said their show tanked because they didn't know what to do. He said he hadn't shown them the way.
That led into a clip from the show where Howard talked about Mark and Brian doing a Lesbian Dating Game which was something he had been doing for years. Howard went off on them and said that they peed in a diaper on the air because they don't know what else to do. Howard said he's watching those two imbeciles. He said that he's trying to let the people in Los Angeles know that they've been ripping him off and saying that they're inventing this stuff.
After that we heard current Howard talking about how crazy it made him when Mark and Brian were doing their show. He said he was insane and he had to prove something to the world. He said that all of these other shit heads out there were doing a version of his show. He said he had to show that he had innovated something.
They played another old show clip where Howard was talking about these guys ripping him off and stealing his personality. He said he knows that they're taping his show. He told them to rip off every bit they could steal. He said that they're coming there to ruin their lives. Howard said he was going to tell them to leave now before the humiliation sets in. Robin said they won't listen. Howard warned them that he was going to defeat them. He said the same thing happened to Imus when he went on up against him. Howard said the Zookeeper in Philadelphia had the same problem. Howard said they're all going down. Howard went off on them for stealing his bits and said he's coming to reclaim what's his.
Next we heard Fred talking about the show going to L.A. and how there was a different feel because they were going to the entertainment capital of the world. Jackie said he knew a lot of people who had transplanted there to Los Angeles and he knew they'd like the show. He said it was a wonderful thing and it put spring in his step when they went there. He said it was very fun and very exciting.
Jim said that it was July 25, 1991 when they made their premiere in Los Angeles. Howard came on and said that he went berserk when they went on out there. He said he was angry that there were people doing his whole show out there and he was really fired up about it. He said he sent the show into hyper drive. Fred said they did better shows around that time and they may have been trying to show off a bit. Fred said they had some awareness of what others were doing in L.A. and it was really awful stuff. He said that there were a lot of lame radio guys getting stuck on TV shows and stuff.
They played another old radio show clip where Howard talked about being on in L.A. and how he really wanted to beat Mark and Brian's asses. He said their TV show was going to fail and he hated them. He said they were going to die. Howard said if they won out there in L.A. then Robin would have sex with one of the listeners out there. Robin agreed to it but then wondered what she was saying. Howard said that they've never promised that to anyone. He had to do it for the L.A. listeners.
They played a clip from an L.A. news report where they previewed Howard's show coming to Los Angeles. They played some audio of Howard on his TV show that had aired out there already. They had some clips of Howard talking about the move and what they were hoping to accomplish out there.
Next up was Jay Thomas talking about Howard's move into Los Angeles and how bad Mark and Brian were. Jay said he was doing shows out there and he was number one in Mexicans 18-50 or something like that. Jay said he thought Howard was doing his thing and he was fine with that. The station decided to go hip hop so he just left and didn't want to fight Howard in talk radio.
They played another old show clip where Howard was taking about how he's going to crush Mark and Brian out there. He said some people thought they could do it in one ratings book but even he didn't believe that would happen. He said after they throw them out of Los Angeles they have to tongue bathe his feet. Then they'll have to ask what market they can go into. He said they actually work for him now, they are his bitches Marge and Brianna.
Next we heard Tim Sabean talking about Mark and Brian and how Howard went right after them and pointed out their deficiencies and took them to their knees immediately. Tim said that's the beauty of the show that Howard could tear them apart like that.
They played another old clip where Gary called into the show and told Howard that he had a Stuttering John update from Los Angeles. John had gotten a bunch of celebrity interviews and they were out tormenting Mark and Brian. Gary said they show up to work together and they were right behind each other when they showed up. Stuttering John said that Mark and Brian were hugging each other. He said he was asking who the catcher and pitcher were.
We heard current Howard talking about an article that was written back then about how they were changing the would of broadcasting with their show. They were breaking down the walls and making things real and honest. Fred said they were doing stuff that no one else was doing and he thinks that they even affected movies. Fred said that he thinks that there was some thievery going on and they never got compensated. Robin said she thinks that their show even changed TV and the things that were talked about. She said it all changed when they started being broadcast out there. Dee Snider said Howard changed people's sensibilities. He said that crap and ass is generally accepted on TV now and that wasn't like that before Howard. He said that saying god damn wasn't even accepted but Howard says it every day.
Don Buchwald said that it was brilliant making that move to Los Angeles. He said the minute they got out there he was beyond the darling of Los Angeles. He said everyone had to listen and he had transformed the radio business out there over night. He said he was the king from day one out there. Fred said that they had people telling them they were nuts but in a complimentary way. He said it was a good thing for them. Howard talked about how cool it was when people like Albert Brooks were saying they were fans of the show. He said it made it great when he'd make fun of a celebrity and they'd complain about it. He said it found it all very exciting.
Jim Forbes said that Howard hit a speed bump when he said something about a beloved sports fan in Los Angeles. Andy bloom said he doesn't panic much but he did when the Magic Johnson incident happened.
That led into an old show bit from late 1991 when Howard made some comments about Magic Johnson. Howard was saying that Magic was a womanizer and he apparently couldn't hear when people say that you have to wear a condom or just find out about the women you're sleeping with. Howard said when you do that kind of thing then it's not a surprise when you end up with some kind of disease. Howard said that everyone knows about these things but they continue to do what they do. Howard said he could give a rats ass about Magic Johnson. He said that there's no telling how many women he gave this disease too. The caller on the line said he hadn't reheard all of this stuff and he wasn't sure he believed any of it. Howard said he wanted to finish this discourse on Magic. He said that if he is so magic then maybe he'll find some kind of cure. He said Magic said F-you to the risk and didn't bother practicing safe sex.
We heard current Robin talking about what happened after that. They had a lot of upset people after that discussion. Andy Bloom said that he has heard a lot of angry people before but he wasn't ready for this whole thing. He said that people were saying they knew where he lived and they were going to shoot the mother fucker. He said he wasn't ready for that. He said he never told Howard that stuff. Andy said he would tell him that they were making threats but not that they were telling him his address and that they were going to kill him.
In another old show clip Howard was talking about the call he got from Andy about the reaction they were getting about that Magic Johnson thing.
Andy talked about the death threats and how it all passed within a few days. He said they were some of the scariest things he had ever heard. Howard also commented on that stuff as well.
We heard another old show clip where a caller told Howard he was a big dumb ass and the most insensitive person he's ever heard. Howard asked how that was. The caller went off on him for a few minutes about how he was wrong for talking about Magic Johnson. Howard said Magic needs more people to speak about him like he did. He said Magic was sleeping with women who are someone's children. He told the caller he hopes that Magic sleeps with his daughter too. Howard and the caller went back and forth arguing for a couple of minutes. Howard told the caller that he doesn't bang every woman that walks into the studio. He said he's aware of AIDS. He said that Magic went out and disregarded every rule about banging chicks. The caller kept cutting Howard off and wouldn't let him finish a thought. Howard had to hang up on him. Howard went on to talk about how you have to wear a condom. He said that you can't just bang every chick on the planet anymore because there is AIDS. They went to break after that.
After that Jim Forbes came on and said that by the summer of 1991 the show was on in four markets and people were loving the show. That led into an old show clip where Howard took a call from a guy who asked what was up with ''Baba Yenta'' (Gary) talking about stuff on the show. Howard and Robin goofed on Gary about how annoying he can be. Howard said it doesn't bother him on the air but when he goes back and listens to the tapes he hears how annoying it can be. Howard said Gary should be treated as a handicapped person with those lips of his. Howard said he has a gauge to find out of he has Gary on too much and that's when they start stoning his limo.
Robin said Gary has a pop he gets when he starts to talk. She said that his lips stick and it pops when he starts to talk. She heard it he day before. Howard had Gary come in and goofed on him about his lips sticking and popping. Robin said he wasn't popping that day but he was yapping a lot. Howard said his lisp get caught and he has to wet them down all the time. Gary said the winter time is very rough on him because his lips dry out.
After that we heard Gary talking about how Jackie loved making fun of him and he got too much joy out of that. Jackie also talked about that and how he'd come up with jokes about him all the time. He said he'd give Howard jokes and they were just funny.
That led into another old clip where Howard had Gary repeating after him. He had Gary repeating that he was groveling at his feet and stuff like that.
We heard current day Howard talking about how Jackie would write the ''repeat after me'' stuff often and he would start to crack up telling Gary to repeat it. Gary said Jackie would pass the notes and he'd do it to just get to him. He said he would have him repeating and Jackie would be laughing in that maniacal laugh of his. Gary said he eventually stopped repeating after him until Howard would brow beat him until he would repeat.
They played another example of Gary repeating after Howard after saying he wasn't going to. Then current Howard came on and said that Gary knows he has to repeat or it doesn't work. He said that stuff would really get to Gary though. He said he blamed Jackie for all of that even though he was the one making him repeat. They threw in some more clips of Gary refusing to repeat and then repeating after Howard.
They played an old show clip where Howard had Richard Marx in the studio and he played one of Daniel Carver's KKK hotline messages. Daniel was giving a movie review for ''Boys in the Hood'' in that message. They spent a few minutes talking about the message and the disturbing stuff he was saying in it.
Next we heard Jim saying that the KKK messages inspired the guys to do the ''Mayberry KKK'' bit. They played that bit next. It was an Andy Griffith show parody that had Fred, Billy West and Howard doing voices. They also played another old show bit where Howard played another KKK hotline message where Daniel Carver mentioned the ''Mayberry KKK'' bit that they had done. Robin thought they had made that up but Howard swore that he didn't.
Ralph Cirella said he loved the Jeffrey Dahmer song parody even though he didn't know the history of Peter Noon. He said he didn't know the song but the parody was great. Ralph said it was great when the gang sang along to that song. He said when you hear the actual song it makes you think of the song parody and he loves that.
They played the song they were talking about which was ''Don't You Dare Have Lunch with Jeffrey Dahmer'' to the tune of ''Mrs. Brown, You've Got A Lovely Daughter.''
After that we heard Jim talking about the many musical performances that didn't involve things like that. We heard Robin talking about James Taylor's performances on the show. She said that they have great voices and they don't even look like they're singing when they sing. She said that Carly Simon was another one like tat. Robin said they were great moments on the show. Jackie also talked about how great those performances were. Jackie said that they were right there next to James while he was singing. He said it was like he had died and gone to heaven. They also had Joe Walsh commenting on James Taylor and how great he is. Joe talked about how he's one of the best and a national treasure.
That led into an old show clip where Joe Walsh and James Taylor performed a song together. Howard was saying that he wishes he could call that girl in high school who blew him off and tell her what he had going on in the studio. Joe and James performed ''Goodnight Irene'' together without any rehearsal. They just got on their guitars and performed.
December 13, 1991 was the last day Sam's voice was heard on the show. They played some audio from that interview where Sam had called into the show while Richard Simmons was in studio. Sam was explaining why he had written Richard a note on a napkin at the restaurant they were both at one night. Richard was upset about Sam not coming up to him and saying hello in person. Sam said he didn't know where he was at, he just heard he was there. Sam told Richard he would do nothing to offend him. Howard wanted to know what it was he said on his HBO special that offended Richard so much. Richard didn't want him to get into it. Howard said he wanted to know. Howard kept asking Sam what it was but Sam wasn't listening and just kept saying he felt bad about it when Richard said his mom had seen the special.
Sam was asking Richard if he could go on his diet program. Howard told Richard that Sam would not stick to it so he shouldn't do it. Richard said he was going to call Sam and put him on a food program to help him out. Howard let Sam go back to the girls he had there with him. Sam said he was very serious about the weight loss thing. He said it was really bothering him. Richard said he would come down and ring his doorbell and talk to him about it. Howard kept telling Richard that once Sam sobers up he won't do this. He said he'd have to stop drinking and stop eating the buttered up food he eats.
They wrapped up today's History of Howard Stern after that. They ended the show around 11:20am.
Howard and Robin laughed at Gary's flies and started to goof on him about that. Gary said he had them off for less than 90 seconds. Howard told him to wipe better. He was laughing hysterically as he was goofing on him about it. He said that was like a picnic for a fly back there. Fred threw in some swarming sounds as they were talking about it.
Host Jim Forbes came on and said that vacation stories were always fun on the show. They went into a clip of Jackie's wife Nancy talking about the toe fungus he had and how someone told the show about them being removed. Jackie had those toe nails removed and they never grew back. Jackie also talked about that and how it was a scam and a sham. He said it cost him a lot of money and they never did grow back.
They played an old clip from the show where Howard talked about Jackie's toe fungus and how he went to a penny saver doctor to get them fixed. Howard told Jackie it was from being unhealthy but Jackie said it was a fungus that spread from his toenails to his fingernails. Howard told him it's from not eating correctly and being unhealthy in general.
Howard asked Jackie to remove his shoes and show them what his feet look like. Jackie said there are no nails there but they look like they're there. Jackie said they look perfectly normal but they're not. He told Howard to touch them but Howard said no.
That led into the clip from the show when Robin did that Dial-A-Date. Howard was talking about the guys that they were looking for and explained Robin's needs. He talked about her big breasts and the down sizing they took. Howard gave some details about her life and tried to sell her to attract the right kind of man. He then went to the phone and picked up on some guys. He found Nick who was a box maker. Robin was laughing at him right away. She didn't seem interested. Howard went to some other calls and found a TV writer. The guy said he was in New York and he makes $300,000 a year doing that. He said he'd rather not say what show it was but it was on NBC. Robin said it would be nice if it were true. He said it is true. It turned out to be Fred calling in from the office.
After that we heard a news clip where a reporter was talking about Howard's radio show going to Los Angeles and bringing the station from number 22 to 16 and being behind Mark and Brian. They had some interviews with some people on the street.
Jim Forbes said that Howard buried the hatchet with Bon Jovi in 1992. We heard from Gary who was talking about how they were slamming the band every day for a while. He said one of the band's people asked what they had to do to end that feud. Gary wasn't sure why they cared but he was told that Howard going off on them day after day was just relentless. Robin said that they just about had them begging to do the show to end the feud. She said that Jon Bon Jovi couldn't deal with it anymore and he called them to ask if they could stop.
Tom Chiusano talked about getting a call from a concert promoter who wanted to help bring an end to it. That led to them doing a birthday show with Bon Jovi playing for Howard. Gary and Robin talked about that and how the band flew in to do that one show for Howard's birthday and how they wanted to bury the hatchet with him.
We heard from Jon Bon Jovi who said he and Richie were writing an album at the time and the opportunity came up to do that show with Conan O'Brien's band who were the house band at the party.
That all led into the performance that Bon Jovi did at that birthday show. In the clip Howard talked to the guys about how upset he was with the way they treated him. They went over their history but the guys weren't ready to get into some of the stuff Howard wanted to. Howard said he never felt he was in a war with David Bryan but he was with Jon and Richie. Richie talked about his mother telling him about how Howard was ranking on him and he'd hear it all from her.
Howard asked the guys to admit he was right about it all but they wouldn't go that far. Howard spent a few more minutes talking to the guys before they performed a song. They got up on stage and performed ''With A Little Help From My Friends'' with the house band. After the performance Howard said it was a good thing they all made up. He said it was great and Robin wished him a Happy Birthday. The guys from Bon Jovi had to run out after that. They went to break after playing a classic interview Stuttering John did with Tommy Lasorda.
Jim Forbes came on and brought up Stuttering John and his guerilla interviewing skills. They had a clip of Artie Lange talking about his favorite Stuttering John interviews with Gennifer Flowers and Fred Gwynn. We heard from Howard about that and also from Stuttering John himself. John talked about how they came up with the idea to ask Gennifer the questions that he asked. John said that he asked the questions and the whole place started laughing. He said one guy there was laughing his ass off.
That led into a clip where Howard was playing that interview clip with Gennifer Flowers. In the clip John asks Gennifer if Governor Clinton used a condom. One guy was laughing hysterically at the question. Howard got a laugh out of that guy's odd sounding laugh. Then John asked Gennifer if she'll be sleeping with any other Presidential candidates. Howard asked what was going on there after that. John said that everyone was laughing and everyone was turning the cameras on him. John said that he had to just scream out because they weren't going to let him ask a question again. Howard said he needs that laughing guy to come on the TV show to give Jackie a break with his laughing. John got in one more question which was ''Was there ever a threesome?''
We heard from Stuttering John again who was saying the best part of that was that it was discussed on the McLaughlin Group. They played some of the audio from that show where they discussed John's questions and called John ''Mr. Melendez.''
That led into an old show clip where Howard had Mark Harris on the show for the first time. Howard talked to Mark about his marriage to Martha Raye. Mark said he had heard that Howard was talking about their marriage and he understands that the show has a big following. They cut that clip off a short time into it.
We heard from Jim Forbes again talking about how Mark went on and on that day. Then he got a call from Andrew Dice Clay. We heard from Dice about why he called in and he said he found that Mark had a great sense of humor.
They played the old show clip where Dice called in and went off on Mark Harris. Dice said he was listening to this guy and he didn't like what he was hearing. He called him some names and Mark fought back. They went back and forth for a few minutes. Dice was calling him ''half a faggot'' and Mark was saying that no one would pay 50 cents to see a Dice show. Howard told Dice he doesn't know what his sexual preferences are so he can't say what he's saying. Dice said he listens to the show to laugh in the morning and not hear this guy. They kept going at each other for a few minutes.
They played an old show clip where Gary told Howard they had Underdog Lady coming on the show but she had ground rules. He said she wants Howard to interview her as a serious person and suspend his modus operandi with her. She demanded that he ask simple questions and not go off on a tangent. She didn't want any R or X-rated antics either. Gary said she said she got a lot of bad feedback from the people at her church. She did wonder why those people were watching Howard's show though.
Howard got Suzanne on the phone and asked her how she was doing. She was doing alright but she sounded very nervous. Howard asked her what the deal was and why she was mad at him. Suzanne said that he has to know that his message does more harm than good. She said that her being on the show isn't getting her any more work and it's not helping her status. Howard said it will but she has to give it a couple of weeks. Suzanne said she didn't like what Howard does on his show and complained about some of that.
Howard told Suzanne that her church friends are hypocrites because they complain about her being on his show but they're watching that show. He said the show is just fun and there isn't anything wrong with it. Robin said Suzanne has seen some unsavory things there on the show and she wanted to know what they were. Suzanne said it was the questions that he was asking about orgasms, drug use, lesbianism and stuff like that. She said that she didn't appreciate the questions they were asking about dogs either. Howard told her it wasn't even about the Underdog character, it was about real dogs. Suzanne said she didn't appreciate any of that. She wasn't going to get into any of that stuff today. Howard asked her about Deputy Dog being gay and Suzanne hung up.
We heard from Howard about Daniel as well. Howard said that Daniel doesn't care that people are against him and he sticks with his core values. Howard said he likes hearing what's on Daniel's mind even if he doesn't agree with it. Howard said he's fascinated with it. He said he finds it odd that his wife even segregates her doll collection. He said that they're like the Munsters being so out of touch but living in modern day society. Howard said he can love Daniel because he's genuine on the radio.
Robin also talked about Daniel Carver and how they could just pretend he doesn't exist or listen to what he has to say. She said that they can listen to that and not follow him. She said that people think they are racist if they have him in the room talking about that stuff even if they're not. She said they're just experiencing and looking at what is in life. Howard said he's a voyeur and he listens to this guy on the radio and he's a great character. He said he is dangerous but he'd rather know what's out there than just pretend it doesn't exist.
That led into a clip from the Howiewood Squares bit where Howard was asking Daniel about his life. They had a bunch of people on the show going off on him and Daniel just sat back and took it. They had some lesbians on the show and Mark Harris who was battling with him verbally.
Jim Forbes also said that they had Henry Hill on the show that year. We heard from Robin about Henry and having him on the show. Fred also chimed in on that and said that was kind of scary and exciting to have Henry on the show. They realized that he had a lot of drinking issues when he was on the show. Robin said Henry calls them when he goes off the wagon and when he's back on it. She said that a week or two after stopping drinking he'd be on the phone drunk again. Fred said he figured it was just a matter of time before someone stuck an ice pick into his head but it never happened. Gary talked about how he saw Henry at an appearance he was doing and he wanted to take 5 steps away from him just in case someone wanted to kill the guy.
Next up was an old show clip where Howard took a call from Henry Hill and asked him about some of the stuff he did when he was in the mob. Henry confirmed some of the stuff that they portrayed in ''Goodfellas.'' Howard asked Henry kept cursing so they had to keep telling him he can't do that on radio. Howard asked Henry about Kennedy's killing and if the mob had anything to do with that. He was also wondering why the mob hadn't found Henry yet. Henry wasn't saying much. Howard found out Henry was a fan of theirs. He said he had been listening to Howard for years. He said he used to listen to Imus when he was living in New York though. That was before Howard was around.
Howard talked to Henry about ''Goodfellas'' and the way they killed some people in that movie. Henry talked about some of that stuff but didn't get into too much detail. Howard asked if he thinks that they're still searching for him. Henry said he hopes not. He said he has a whole new life and he hopes that's not the case. Henry said that his finance is right off the melon truck so she doesn't know anything.
henry was cursing so Howard kept having him start over talking about the stuff he was talking about. Howard told Henry to go back out and hide and he'd see him on TV. Howard wondered who was next to be their friend. Jackie said that you know Manson is listening.
Next up we heard Fred talking about that scary laugh Henry had. That led into an old show clip where they had pulled Henry's laugh and kept playing it over and over. Howard said it was like De Niro's laugh in Cape Fear. They went to break after playing a Jackie the Joke Man clip where he talked about how the show worked and how smooth things went most of the time.
In the old show clip Howard had a guy on the phone who had the audio of Larry and Chevy Chase talking about Howard. A caller had thrown out a ''Howard Stern!'' to Chevy when they were doing the live interview. Chevy said Howard had the brain of an egg timer. Howard wondered what the beef was with him. Howard said Chevy had been on the show and he didn't seem to have a problem. Robin said he did curse them out when they called him on the set of his movie that one time. Howard said Chevy wasn't even that funny when he was funny on Saturday Night Live. Then Howard had a clip of Chevy talking off the air to Larry and saying that Howard Stern had nothing there... nothing at all.
Howard said that Chevy is jealous of him and he's got the heat around him that Chevy had on him when he was on SNL. Howard said Chevy went to do movies and all of them suck. He said every movie the guy does sucks. He said he produced this Invisible Man movie and it blows and Chevy knows it. Howard said the jealousy is really intense. Howard said Chevy has no idea the hornets nest he just stepped into.
We heard current day Howard talking about going off on Chevy and how Chevy fought back which was the worst mistake he could have made. Howard said he was vicious and it went on for along time. Billy West said Howard picked right up on it and he wondered why a guy would do something like that. Billy said Howard could call people out on that. He said he was glad he wasn't Chevy Chase because there are so many people out there that were attack dogs and would yell stuff out at those people. Gary said it was like going to war when Howard would go after someone. Howard said he has a chip on his shoulder and when Chevy says he's not funny that really hurts.
Fred said it didn't get big until Richard Belzer came on the show and called Chevy's house. Chevy was calling Howard a bully and got really upset about the call. We heard from Richard Belzer about that. Belzer was saying that Chevy got mad at Howard and him and then he started to yell at his own wife and his housekeeper.
That all led into the old show clip where Howard called Chevy's house with Belzer. They got his housekeeper on the phone and she said it wasn't Chevy Chase's house. Howard knew it was and had her go get Chevy. She put them on hold again. Howard had Gary try to call and she said it wasn't Chevy Chase's house. Gary tried to find out whose house it was. Gary eventually got her to put Chevy on the phone. Howard picked up and told him who it was. Howard asked Chevy why he was bad mouthing him on the Larry King Show. Chevy's wife got on the phone and Chevy yelled at her to get off. Howard said that Chevy had been mean to him on the Larry King show but his wife didn't think that he was being mean.
Chevy told Howard that he didn't bad mouth him but this was his home and he didn't like him. He asked him not to call his home again. Howard got off the line and said ''who cares.'' Richard Belzer said that was real radio. Jackie said it was real anger. Howard didn't understand why Chevy was mad at him. Belzer said maybe it was because he called at 7:30 in the morning.
After that we heard from current day Belzer who was saying that he didn't think it was going to evolve into what it did back then. He said that Chevy can be his own worst enemy sometimes. Scott the Engineer said that it was pretty harmless that day and Howard was just calling to talk. He said Chevy got pissed and maybe his reaction was a little over the top. He said he could have just told Howard that they could set up and interview instead of getting so upset. Fred said Chevy went on Arsenio Hall and bad mouthed Howard again so Howard got into the fighting mood and really got into it.
They played another old show clip where Howard took a call from a guy who had audio from Arsenio Hall's show where Chevy was bad mouthing him. The caller said he was surprised he even brought it up and commented on the whole thing. Howard played the clip and Chevy was talking about the call he got from him and how he didn't appreciate that. Arsenio was making it sound like he didn't know who Chevy was fighting with. Arsenio was also laughing very nervously at what Chevy was saying. Howard goofed on that a little bit. The caller said it makes Howard look bad when he says something like that. Howard said he didn't even air that phone call to Los Angeles. He said he cut it out of the show that day. Howard spent a few minutes going off on Arsenio and told the ''triangle headed bastard'' to keep his mouth shut. Howard goofed on his looks and told him to keep those oversized gums of his shut. He even wished AIDS on him and said he hopes he gets it and dies. He said he doesn't like that guy. Robin said that was a little harsh. Howard said he wishes painful testicles on him instead then.
We heard from Billy West next. Billy was talking about the way Howard would go after people like that. Gilbert Gottfried also commented on that quickly. Pat Cooper also talked about that and how much he loved that time on the show. He said he loved that Howard went off on Chevy like that. Artie Lange also commented on it and said that he and his friends loved when Howard would go after someone like that. He said that he grew up loving Chevy Chase but then Howard hated him so everyone turned on him.
They went into another old show clip where Chevy Chase called into the show. Chevy was pretending he couldn't hear Howard and didn't know who he was. Howard said it couldn't possibly be a surprise. Chevy kept it going and pretended that he didn't know what was going on. Chevy told the story as he knew it and went over the Larry King thing. Chevy said he made some comments off the air about him but Gary said he made some on the air too. Chevy said he doesn't hear his show and he doesn't appreciate him calling him on the set of Fletch and stuff. He said he called then and bullied his maid. Howard said it wasn't him calling his maid. It was Gary who called and he wasn't being a bully. Chevy told Howard he's a bully and he doesn't like him. He said he didn't have any reason to talk to him any further so he was done. He hung up after saying he had to go back to work. The guys talked about Chevy's odd behavior and wondered if he was insane. Howard didn't get why he called in to do that. Jackie said he thought Chevy was looking for Howard to turn around and apologize to him.
We heard from Tim Sabean about that call and how controversial it turned out to be. He said it was one of those moments that he couldn't turn the radio off. He said he had to hear the whole show in his car so he wasn't able to get out.
Howard talked about Stuttering John running into Chevy out at some events. He said he would run into him constantly after all of the fighting. We heard from John as well who was saying Chevy was his favorite guy from SNL and the guy ended up hating him for asking all of the stupid questions. He said he would wait outside of places for hours to bust his balls.
That led into some old show clips where Howard played John's interviews with Chevy. John would ask Chevy questions and Chevy would just say ''What?'' and pretend he didn't hear what he was saying. John would keep asking questions even though he was getting the brush off. John asked what a bully was and Chevy described Howard as the bully. They also talked about how Chevy obviously knows the show even though he claimed that he didn't.
We heard from current day Gary about the interviews John would do and how it made things even worse. He said he thought it was never going to end.
That led into another show clip where Howard had some more Stuttering John interviews and one with Chevy. Chevy was all pissed off at John when he asked him a question. He asked John if Howard wanted him to put his dentist in a higher tax bracket. John didn't get the joke so Chevy had to tell him it was a joke. Howard talked about how John is like a robot when he asks questions. He doesn't seem to care that they don't want to talk to him. John told Howard that Chevy looked like a beaten dog that night when he saw him again. He said he didn't have the heart to ask him another question. Howard said he deserves to be a beaten dog.
Gary told Howard that Chevy was on the phone and he was cursing so much he couldn't control it. Gary said Chevy asked him what his problem was. Howard said that's what he was asking about Chevy. Gary said Chevy asked him if he was the one who called his home and asked what Howard's problem was. He said that he was unfamiliar with Stuttering John and why they were making fun of a guy with a stutter. Gary said Chevy was cursing him out and yelling about Howard and said that they were bordering on harassment. Gary said Chevy yelled at him and he had to shoot back at him with some stuff of his own. Gary said Chevy told him that court proceedings were going to be in the works. Howard said he'll find out that the cops and judges are his fans so nothing will happen. Gary said Chevy thinks that John is a guy they created just to follow him around to make his life miserable.
We heard from Richard Belzer about how he called Chevy one time to wish him a happy birthday and Chevy wondered why he was calling.
That led into a clip where Chevy called into the show to wish Howard a happy birthday. Chevy called in and said that they were paying him to call in. Howard said he thinks that Chevy likes them now. Chevy said he didn't have a feud with Howard and he never listens to the show. He swore that he never did but Howard didn't believe it. Howard said he wasn't even sure why he was mad at Chevy. Robin reminded him of the Larry King show thing. They talked about that call and Chevy kept wondering who this woman was that kept interrupting. It was Robin. Howard wondered how Chevy didn't know who Robin was because he knows he listens. Chevy said he didn't but then he said he did know of him through Belzer. Chevy said he just wanted to let all of that go. Howard tired to move on and talk about other stuff. Chevy talked about hanging out with Steve Martin and other people. Chevy ended up hanging up a short time later, right in the middle of the conversation.
Jim Forbes said that the feud went on for a few more years. Five years to be exact. That led into an old show clip where Robin was reading some news and read that Howard could be the guy who takes over late night TV. Jason Priestly was sitting in that day. During the discussion Howard said he would keep that theater named the Chevy Chase Theater if they gave him the job at FOX. Howard said he would love to have them call it the Chevy Chase theater when they introduced him. He said he'd love to be urinating on the sign for the theater as they introduce him.
We heard from Fred who was saying Chevy eventually called and asked how he could make it all stop. That's all it took. He said that it worked out for Jon Bon Jovi that way too.
They played another old show clip where Chevy was on the phone to bring an end to the feud. Chevy said that he was calling in to end the feud. Howard said he lost bets because Chevy actually did call in. Chevy said that they have never even met each other so he's not sure how they could have any water under the bridge. Howard said he never understood why he was an ass if Chevy never heard the show. Howard said he didn't get why he was so upset with him when he was talking about him on Larry King's show. Chevy said he wasn't even sure why he did that. Howard said he wanted to understand because he brings this out in a lot of famous people. He said it's like they resent his success. Chevy said he didn't know why he said it. Then he said that when he was shooting Fletch Howard called him with Richard Belzer. He said they were shooting in Astoria and he was asking questions about his co-star, Julianne Moore, and her divorce. He said she was kind of upset about that. Howard said he didn't think it was that big of a deal. Chevy said he thinks that's where the resentment came from and he didn't think it was appropriate that he asked the questions that he did. Chevy said he'd like to put this behind them and just let it be water under the bridge.
Howard told Chevy that Belzer was there again and that was a complete coincidence. Howard said Belzer was the reason they called Chevy. Belzer came in and talked to Chevy a little bit. They hadn't seen each other in a long time since the feud. Robin said it was one of the biggest feuds of all time and it was coming to an end. Howard said he was feeling empty inside. Chevy told him to call his house again and they can start all over. Howard wasn't sure what to do now that the feud was over.
Chevy talked about how tough things were with the fans out there because they would yell stuff to him when he was out with his kids. He said he didn't know what to do and he can't really blame Howard for what those people say to him. Howard said that they have to tell celebrities not to get into a thing with him because he can't stop his audience once they get started.
Chevy also admitted that he listens to Howard every morning, all the time. Howard said he likes that they've cleared this up. Chevy told him he can go after him again if he wants to. Howard thanked Chevy for calling in and let him go. He said the guy was a gentleman. He said Belzer always said he was a good guy and maybe he was right.
We heard from current day Robin who was saying that Chevy had to live with that nightmare for years. She said that it cost him a lot and he was bombarded all the time. She said that now you'd never know that he ever didn't like the show. He calls the show to promote stuff now and he was even at Howard's wedding. Howard said he thinks that some of the audience think he should never have made up with the guy. He said he thought it was kind of compelling that they had made up like that.
They went to break after playing a Richard Belzer clip where he talked about how he got his job on ''Homicide'' as Detective John Munch. Barry Levinson had heard him on the Stern Show and wanted him to audition. He got the job and he's been playing that part ever since for 15+ years.
That led into an old show clip where Billy was doing his Leona Helmsley voice and crying about who was going to take care of her husband when she's in jail. Howard and the guys talked about how no one seems to care about this woman and they laugh at her on the news when they report on her jail time.
After that we heard from Artie Lange who talked about listening to the show in those days. He said that they'd do comedy shows and stuff and they'd go back to this one kid's apartment and listen to the show. He would try to call into the show as a gay guy as the head of NAMBLA. He said he got past John one day and got to Gary. He said Gary knew how to sort that stuff out and when he asked him where his next meeting was and when he said ''Uhhh'' Gary hung up on him. Gary talked about how they found out about the NAMBLA messages and started playing them on the show.
That led into an old show clip where Howard was playing the NAMBLA voice mail message where they were talking about the meeting they had coming up and how it was the Horatio Alger chapter of NAMBLA. Howard and the guys talked about how creepy that was. Howard said the guy in the message had a weird accent. Howard ended up doing his Ricky Ricardo voice as that guy's voice. He was doing a gay ''I Love Lucy'' thing all by himself. He talked about what the bit would be like and how they'd work that out. Robin liked the sound of it. Howard kept the bit going and had Fred playing the sound effects.
Howard talked about Grillo and how he's really not trying to be a personality. He said he was quite charming and had a good sense of humor about himself. He said it was a great time to have the guy around. Steve said he never had a speech therapist or anything and he just sort of took off. He said Howard picked up on the little things and made them big.
That led into an old show clip where Howard was talking about his breakfast and how he hates to eat in front of people. He said Steve Grillo stares at him like a mental patient when he's eating. Howard said the guy looks dead when he's staring at him. Grillo said he doesn't stare. Howard said Gange stares too. Grillo said he doesn't even stay in there when he eats. Howard said he idolizes him too much. Howard ended up goofing on Grillo's accent. Grillo claimed he had a cold but it was just an accent.
Howard read the letter that Grillo sent to them about why he wanted the job. Howard pointed out all of the misspelled words in the letter. There were many. Howard wondered why they let this guy into the station. Howard read more of the letter and it was kind of scary the way Grillo was talking about why he wanted the job.
After that we heard current day Howard talking about how no one ever brought their interns on the air. He said he loves to do stuff like that. He said it can be fascinating to be in on that daily soap opera that happens at work. He said it's the flavor of the radio station that he wanted to bring to the show and that's why Steve Grillo became a star. He said everyone on the show can become a star. Howard talked about how all of these broadcasters are doing the same thing with their shows now. He said that Steve was more interesting to him than the DJs they had on the station. He said Steve was fascinating.
That led into a show clip where Howard was talking about his microphone levels being changed even after he asked them not to touch anything. He said he likes to over modulate and he wants it left that way. Howard said he can't handle it when they change it back. He said Richie the engineer will change it every few months and thinks that he won't notice.
That discussion led to Howard playing the ''proper modulation'' clip where his father was testing the equipment at the studio when he was a young boy. Howard said he'd like to know who his father was thanking in that clip. He replayed it and got a laugh out of that clip when his father says ''Testing, testing... ONE TWO'' and over modulates himself. He says ''thank you'' at the end so he wondered what was up with that.
Jim Forbes said they got a wealth of sounds from those old tapes of Ben Stern. Fred talked about how they pulled sound effects from those clips. He said they added those sound effects to the show over time and he didn't think people were doing it in the way they were doing it. Fred said he would start playing them just to see if they worked and they did. He said that the list became endless and people started suggesting other things they could use. He said they all became memorable and they have a big list of sounds they have used over the years. Fred said that some of them are eventually retired but he'll bring them back at a future time to go back in time a bit.
They went into another old show clip where Howard was listening to ''Knockin On Heaven's Door'' and Fred was playing knocking sounds and door bell rings. Then he'd play a door opening. Howard was laughing at that and had Fred keep playing them. Fred played gun shots and more door bell rings.
After that we heard from Quentin Tarantino about the Stern Show and how great he thinks the show is. They went to break after that.
We heard from current day Robin about those riots and what was going on at the time. Robin said that she remembers how scary that was. Howard also talked about how scared some of the radio station guys were about it back then. He said that he was told not to comment on the riots because they didn't want the station out there to get broken into. He thought that was ridiculous so he didn't listen. He said that he didn't think anyone rioting was tuned into his show.
Andy Bloom said that Howard played a song parody about the riots and they weren't sure what to do about it. He wasn't sure if they should play it on the air. He said Howard was making fun of the riots while the city was burning down. Andy said he told Howard that it might be a good idea not to talk about it but the General Manager called Howard and told him that he might want to avoid it.
That led into a show clip where Howard was talking about that call he got from the GM and how maybe they should just listen to the show and if they don't like it then they don't have to run it. He said he wants to talk about what's going on out there and he's not going to stop because they're afraid of the rioting out there. He went on and on talking about how this guy was telling him how to do his show and he's just not going to do that. He said it's meaningless to do that for the one station. Howard said they can take his show off the station for a day if they're that afraid. He said he's glad he's in the position where he doesn't have to listen to those guys.
Robin reminded Howard about a time when they weren't allowed to talk about Princess Grace at WNBC. They were told not to talk about it on the show because it was such a tragedy. Howard said he had no desire to talk about anything like that.
We heard more from Robin about how she's surprised that people can't just say what they think. She said Howard is one of those people. Chris Rock is another. She said that most people are afraid to talk about stuff in the way they really think. Howard said he thinks that there was one morning that he backed off to make sure that people understood what he was talking about. He said he wasn't able to not talk about the L.A. riots though.
That led back into an old show clip where Howard did discuss the L.A. riots even though the guys at the Los Angeles station asked him not to. Howard told them to leave him alone and pull the show off the air if they have to. He said that he's never sure what he's going to say about stuff so he can't just not talk about it. Howard said he thinks they should run music to loot by and just let the people loot in L.A. Howard went on to talk about how they were asking him to watch what he says. Howard said they asked him to broadcast like he was in Los Angeles and there was only a glass ball between him and the rioters. Howard said he wouldn't be dumb enough to be broadcasting live in L.A. if he lived there.
We heard from Gary who was talking about Billy West being out in L.A. during the riots. They called Billy around 3:30 in the morning and he was in a hotel at the time. Gary said Billy wouldn't do the bit while he was out there. They wanted him to yell the N-word out while the riots were going on.
They played another old show clip where Howard was talking to Billy West as one of the protesters out there. Billy was doing his black voice for a bunch of characters. He told Howard this was his wake up call and was repeating the stuff they were saying during the riots out there.
They played a show clip where Howard took a call from Joey Buttafuoco for the first time. Howard said he figured Joey might be a listener. Joey told Howard he was definitely a listener before all of this stuff went down. Joey and Howard talked about what was going on with Mary Jo and how he was helping her out with a lot of stuff. He said that whatever she was doing, he's doing now. He said it makes him appreciate what she did.
Joey claimed that he didn't cheat on his wife and that was all lies. Howard said he likes this defense. He told him to stick with that even if it's not true. Joey said it's not just a story, that's the truth. He said he has a beautiful wife and he loves her. Howard said he would do the same thing if he was caught.
Gary came on and said that they'd get big guests like Jessica Hahn, Joey Buttafuoco and people like that and they'd end up in the paper. That would validate the show. Gary said that they were having great guests and still getting women to take their shirts off on the show.
They played another old clip where Howard was going to take a call from a news reporter who wanted to use some of the Joey Buttafuoco interview on their show. Howard wanted credit for that if they do. Howard told Gary that they should say ''Howard Stern, King of the Media'' when they credit him. He said he likes the way Michael Jackson made MTV call him the King of Pop whenever they referred to him so he's going to do the same thing.
That led into a news report about that Joey Buttafuoco interview where they credited Howard and played clips of Joey talking about his wife's shooting. Howard had been playing that clip and said they did call him the King of Media.
After that we hear current day Howard talking about how popular the show was and how they have tremendous clout. He said that the show is huge and it seemed natural that Joey would gravitate toward the show. Howard said Joey and Mary Jo were good guests on the show too. He said they would talk about just about anything and that was perfect for the show.
Robin talked about how Joey would plead his innocence and one day Joey and Amy's father got into an argument on the air. Robin said it was hard to believe that this stuff was even going on and that they were meeting these people. She said it was like a TV show.
They played an old clip of Mary Jo Buttafuoco calling into the show. Howard spent a short time speaking to her about what she had gone through. Howard wasn't sure if she was the real Mary Jo but Gary was sure and so was Robin. Howard said Gary doesn't usually test people very well. Howard said Gary probably made her spell Mary Jo.
Howard spoke to Mary Jo about getting shot and she gave him the details of what that was like for her. She said it was like she was hit in the side of the head with a bat when that gun shot went off. Mary Jo said that there was no accident there like Amy was claiming. Mary Jo said she lost consciousness almost immediately. She said her neighbor found her moaning and called an ambulance. Mary Jo said she remembers the nurse hanging over her and telling her she was shot. She said that she thought she was a pretty attractive woman before this. She told Howard about how she's disabled now and she can't just eat or drink whenever she wants. She's partially paralyzed because of this.
After that they played a song parody that Howard did with, Emerson Lake and Palmer, about the whole Mary Jo shooting thing. They sang about the shooting, Joey Buttafuoco, Mary Jo, Amy and Dominic Barbara taking the case.
They went to break after playing a clip of Geraldo Rivera talking about how big of a deal Howard Stern is in the business and in history.

Artie Lange talked about hearing about Sam and he tuned in to hear Howard talk about Sam dying. That led into the audio from the show where Howard talked about Sam's death the Monday after his death. They talked about the channel 9 show special they ran that weekend too. They did that for Sam on a Saturday night. Howard talked about how he's already talked about it with 900 people. Howard said someone asked him about Sam recently and he said he would do anything for Sam because he always came through for him. He said Sam was always willing to help them out with anything they asked for. Howard said Sam never asked for anything when he'd ask for help either. Howard said the guy was a very giving person. Corey said he was like a brother to him. He said he always helped him out too. Corey said Sam told him he had room for a spare brother if he ever needed one. That was after Sam's brother killed himself.
Corey said the weirdest thing is that Sam was sober and he was killed by a drunk driver. They weren't even sure if the kid was drunk or not at that time. They said they heard that the truck was full of empty beer cans though. Corey said that he always expected to hear that Sam had died from an OD and not from something like this. Howard said Sam used to do tremendous amounts of coke. He said he'd do it at the station and he had to ask him to stop because that was his job and he can't have stuff like that going on. Sam was cool with that. Howard said he was no one to preach about all of that stuff but he did try to lecture him at times.

Howard said that they're hoping to put together a show by Friday for Sam. He said they want to give him a great tribute show. He said he still can't believe that he didn't go out on a coke frenzy. Corey said the whole drunk driving thing is freaking him out. Robin said they keep quoting Sam about the M.A.D.D. people because he hates that they didn't want people driving drunk because he loved doing it. Corey said it was hard to laugh at that now.
Howard said he thinks that Sam would be laughing at his own death. He said Sam used to tell him to joke about his brother's death. Sam would get on the air and joke about it himself. Howard said he was thinking about how horrible it was that he'd never get to talk to Sam again. Howard said he was the life of the party and he never let up. He said he flashed on Sam asking him how to lose weight and he told him to order some healthy food. Sam ordered spinach but it was cream of spinach and it was loaded with butter and cream. Sam told him he was trying at least and he should take it easy on him. He said he remembers Richard Simmons trying to help Sam but he warned him that Sam would never come to him for help.
Howard and the guys spent a few more minutes talking about Sam and how he was talking about having a kid when he died. Corey said maybe it was best all of this happened before he had the kid. Howard asked Corey if he would walk around with cardboard cut outs of them at the funeral. Corey said he would do that at the party but not at the funeral. Howard said he thinks Sam would have loved that.
After all of that we heard from Dice Clay who said that he used to hang with Sam before he got really big. He said that Sam was one of the guys he would watch and enjoy when he was starting out. Dice said Sam went nuts when he got some fame. He said he still misses the guy and he tells his kids that they shouldn't do drugs because of things like that.
We also heard from Joan Rivers who said that Sam was one of the greats. Leslie West talked about how brilliant Sam was. He said he still has pictures of Sam in his house and when he looks at him he still thinks he's alive. He said that's like Jimi Hendrix and how he's still alive in that way. Joe Walsh also said he really misses Sam. Joe said his insight into human nature was great. Joe said that he hit common threads that everybody related to. Joe said he really misses Sam. Fred talked about the song he created about Sam. He said Sam was a breath of fresh air in comedy and he was also one of the first show business connections that Howard had. Fred said Howard wasn't hanging with a lot of show business people at the time so he must have been really taken with Sam. Fred said they were trying to go with something that was kind of funny but also touching when they did the tribute song.
We heard from Robin and Jessica Hahn about that song too. Jessica was near tears as she was talking about the song. She said that Sam loved his life and he got to enjoy his last days and years with Howard. Jessica talked about how Sam would talk about Howard off the air because he loved him so much. Artie also said that this was Fred at his finest when he did the ''Sounds of Kinison'' song. He said that Fred is a mad genius at putting that stuff together. He said it was a very special day on the show when they played that song. Fred said that the song just came together like that and you don't over think it when it happens. That led into the song ''Sounds of Kinison'' that Fred performed to the tune of ''The Sound of Silence'' by Simon and Garfunkel.
After the song we heard an old show clip where Howard and the guys talked about the song. Robin was all choked up. Howard thanked Fred and Pig Vomit for creating that song.
The History of Howard Stern was over around 11:20am.
We heard Howard talking about how he ended the show too. He said they wanted him to do a third season but he didn't want to keep doing it for the money they were paying. They did the whole show for $50,000 a week and it was just too much for them to handle. He said he was working his ass off along with the other guys and it was just too much. Howard said it was a tremendous effort and he was burning out from it. Howard said he just couldn't do it anymore and he said no to them.
We heard another news report about the show being canceled and that led into an old show clip of Howard talking about the show being canceled and how WWOR was claiming that they canceled it even though it was him who turned down the third season. He said that the station press released that they canceled it even though he was the one who canceled it. He wondered what their motivation was for making him look bad. He said they were making him look like a loser in TV when he was a winner.
We heard another news report where they reported about Howard's TV show being canceled. They had a press conference for the reason for the show being canceled. Howard told the press he was not canceled, he canceled them.
We heard from current day Fred about how sad it is that those shows are locked up in a vault somewhere and no one gets to see them. Fred said that stuff would be funny even today. Fred said they were on in markets that Howard's radio show wasn't on in and people enjoyed it. He said that some people watched that show instead of Saturday Night Live. He said some people watched it because it was like a car wreck.
Mark Cronin said that if they had done another season they would have made it even better than they had. He said their ratings were going up and up as they went on. Dan Forman said that the show was very unique and very tight and it was fresh and original stuff that no one could see anywhere else. He said you knew you were going to see good stuff on that show. Dan said you could tune in and have a great time.
Fred talked about how fun it was doing TV but that wasn't the reason to live. He said the radio show has always been more exciting. Fred said you can create stuff on radio in 5 minutes but with TV it takes longer. Then there's a movie and that's even harder.
They played another old show clip where Howard took a call from Daniel Carver. He told Daniel about the TV show being canceled. Daniel didn't know what to say. Howard said it was a good venue for Daniel because they got to see him having fun and being a regular guy on the show. Daniel said it let him talk to millions of people but that's not stopping him from going on other TV shows.
We heard from current day Robin about the TV show and how hard it was to do that and the radio show. Robin said it did introduce them to other people who had never even heard the radio show. She said they had no lives when that show was going on. She was kind of glad to see it go from that standpoint.
Howard said he had a fever to do well and he thinks he could have found more balance in his life at the time. He said he could have had more time to spend at home but he didn't have that in his blood at the time. He said he managed to be part of his kid's lives but it was a lot of juggling.
Fred said they were doing the radio show 5 days a week and then trying to create that other show that went all night on a Friday night. Then Howard was editing all Saturday right up until air time to get it all to work. Dan Forman said he never worked harder than he did on that show. Ralph Cirella also talked about how he got to do a lot of work on that show and it was crazy for everyone. He said the budget was ridiculous for what it took to make that show work. Ralph said when one door closes another one opens.
Howard told Jay that the name of the movie was going to be ''The Adventures of Fartman'' and it would gross $200 million. He said they were going to start working on it immediately. He said he was going to fill it with the same stuff that made his radio and TV shows popular. He was going to film it in New York and explained to Jay how he became Fartman and how he'd be flying through the air with his gas.
Next up was a news clip from a Los Angeles channel where they reported on this Fartman movie. Then current day Howard talked about the Fartman movie and how he wasn't really planning on doing that. He said J.F. Lawton was in the audience and he wanted to write the movie.
In and old show clip we heard Howard talking about his meeting with J.F. Lawton about the Fartman movie. Howard was telling Robin about the meeting and how cool it sounds. He said that this guy is really cool and he thinks the movie could be out by the next Christmas. Howard told Robin he had a meeting of the minds the day before and this is the movie he's had in mind for a long time. He just needed the right guy.
We heard from J.F. Lawton about how he got involved in the movie. He said they told him it was just a joke at first and they wanted to do something else. J.F. said people would go to see the movie just based on the name of the movie and that's what he wanted to write.
We heard another old show clip where Howard talked more about the movie and how they were going to shoot it in New York. Howard claimed he was going through resumes and pictures trying to find a female co-star. He said he was thinking of Courtney Cox as a co-star. He said she'd have to get topless though. He said he likes that name too, it's kind of catchy.
We heard from Don Buchwald about how they had a production team and a writer for the movie and they thought they had something at that point. J.F. said he was warned about how this could change his life being involved with the Stern Show. J.F. said he wasn't sure what that meant until he went into a tea shop and the woman working there asked if he wrote ''The Adventures of Fartman'' and he told her he did.
In another old show clip we heard a young kid asking Howard to make some Fartman cartoons or something. Howard found out the kid was just 11 years old. Howard wondered why he wasn't in school. The kid said he was home sick. Howard found out the kid had a girlfriend but he dumped her because ''she's a bitch.'' Howard and Robin asked the kid what was wrong with the girl. The kid said she was a slut. Howard said if he had a son he'd be just like this kid. He gave the kid some advice about how to keep girls until you have another one lined up. The kid said he got to second base with that chick. Howard was surprised. The kid was only 11. Howard said maybe the kid shouldn't be listening to his show and maybe he should listen to a morning zoo. The kid said he got to second but one of the other guys she was with got to third base.
Howard talked to the kid about this girl he wanted when he was around that age. He said he was a coward and insecure. Howard asked how he found out how to do this stuff. The kid said he learned it from watching his TV show. Howard said goodbye to the kid when he heard that. They went to break after that.
We heard from Steve Leeds who used to work with MTV and he was saying that he had tried to get Howard involved with MTV for a while. He said he was successful getting him to come in and do two days there for a Thanksgiving special. We heard some audio from that special where Howard was talking about the videos they were watching.
Steve said Howard took a camera away from one of the camera men and went into a green room with Julie Brown. They went behind the scenes and the MTV people didn't like doing that kind of stuff at the time. Howard took the cameraman back stage and went to find Downtown Julie Brown. Howard told them that they were photographing her all wrong and gave her some advice and the camera guy some advice.
Steve Leeds said they had Carolyn Heldman on the show at the time and Howard told her that no one knew who she was. They played more of Howard filling in on MTV and going out on the street to ask some people if they knew who Carolyn was. Howard told her that she should date someone famous... like him.
Jim Forbes introduced another person from MTV who said that they got big ratings that day Howard filled in. The head of the network wasn't pleased that they had Howard on though.
Next up we heard a show clip where Howard talked about how MTV had agreed to let him appear on the Video Music Awards as Fartman. He talked about what he was planning on doing and how he was going to fly down on to the stage next to his co-presenter. He wants to have a big hole in his suit to show his ass. He said his agent didn't want him to do that but he said that's exactly what he has to do. Howard said he's not
We heard form Joel Gallen again about what Howard wanted to do and how he wanted to fly in. Joel said they had a costume in mind and that's what he wanted to come in as. Joel said they had to have a special podium that they were going to make explode when he farted. Don Buchwald said that Howard had never appeared on any show like this and he had never worn an outfit like this. He said they had to figure out how to do it in a memorable way and it may be the most memorable thing on those award shows ever.
In another show clip we heard Howard and Robin talking about going out to Los Angeles to do the VMA awards. Howard said this wasn't a show trip, it was just to do the VMAs. Howard said he hopes everyone is excited about going because they almost didn't. He talked about his plans for doing the rehearsal and practicing his flying and all of that. He said that he was walking around the station in his costume the week before. He said people were sickened by it. He said people were telling him he needs to do sit-ups. Howard said he told his kids they can't watch the awards show. He said it's too embarrassing. Jackie asked who was in charge of the fart sounds. Howard said he was worried about that and he was thinking of having Fred sit in the booth to tell them what to do. Howard said Fred knows how to delay it just right. He said Fred might have to go in as a special technician to make sure it works right.
Howard said he's 38 years old and he's a buffoon. He said he's not sure why he's doing this. Robin said that everyone turned down the chance to be on stage with him.
Joel Gallen came on and said that they didn't have anyone who was willing to be on stage with Howard at the time. They went through 10 or 15 celebrities before they found Luke Perry who was willing to do it. He said Luke even put his hands on Howard's ass. We heard from Howard about Luke being the only one willing to do it. Howard said he was happy with Luke doing it because he played along with it.
They played another show clip where Howard took a call from Luke Perry about the awards show. Luke said he found it hard to believe that no one else was willing to do it. Luke said he was happy to do it and they'd have to pick up some chicks after that and go out. Howard said Luke can pick up some chicks because he can't do that himself. Howard asked Luke what they were going to be doing there. Luke said they'll be hanging out back stage and they'll just talk to other people there.
We heard from current day Howard about how crazy he must have been to do that whole Fartman thing. He said he touched on it in his movie ''Private Parts'' too. That led to them playing a clip from ''Private Parts'' where Howard talked about that event and how it worked out for him. We heard more from current day Howard about how he had his ass cheeks exposed and he had to cover up back stage so no one would know what he was really up to. He didn't want anyone telling him ''no.'' Fred said he thinks Howard was trying to out do Prince because he had done an assless pants thing one time.
Joel Gallen talked about how they had done something a year earlier where they had to fly Steven Tyler in with a piano on a show. He said they used the same guy who did that rigging to fly Howard in on his rigging. Jackie said he thinks it was a huge expense to do the whole thing but it was a lot of fun and very exciting. He said it was so ridiculous but it was great. Jackie said Howard thought he was going to die flying in on that thing. Fred said that's the last time they'll get Howard on those wires. Robin said she remembers the rehearsals and how terrified Howard was to do it. She said he was terrified of heights and he really had problems carrying out this great idea. She said he did some rehearsals in the afternoon and by the second or third time he was in a flying move. Then by the time the show aired he was hanging on to the ropes and getting twisted up in them. She said Howard did everything wrong but he still remembered to perform once he hit the stage.
Howard said he rehearsed it but barely. He said the wires were heavy metal cables and his fingers started to get caught in them but he managed to yank them out. He said it was dangerous and scary. Howard's mom talked about how scary it was for her too. She said she wasn't too happy about it but it was very funny.
We heard a clip from the MTV VMAs where Luke Perry came out and introduced Fartman and Howard came flying down to the stage as Fartman. Howard then showed his ass and Luke grabbed it. Then Howard blasted a fart and blew up the podium. Howard turned to the audience and told them to touch his ass. He said everyone would be kissing that ass when his movie came out and became number 1 at the box office. Luke and Fartman had to give an award to Metallica for Best Metal Hard Rock video. The band came out and Howard kept hogging the spotlight from them.
We heard from current day Howard about how weird things got with Metallica. Howard said he didn't know who they were at the time and he was hogging their spotlight. Howard said they were a struggling band and he was an asshole standing there hogging their spotlight. He was bending over and spreading his ass while they were trying to talk. He said he was doing something bigger than life and he wasn't stopping. Robin said they were getting pissed and they were not happy with Howard. Fred said they did look like they wanted to kick his ass that night. He said he'd be worried about James Hetfield but not Lars kicking Howard's ass.
They played more of Howard's appearance on the VMAs where they were walking off stage with him farting. Howard kept saying he was Fartman as he was walking of stage.
Howard said he thinks that Lars tried to kick him on stage that night. He said that was one scary appearance but he never did regret it. They played another clip from ''Private Parts'' where Howard was talking about what people thought of him after that appearance.
Howard talked about what people thought of him that night he did that Fartman thing. He said his ass cheeks looked awful and it would have made for a great reality movie. Joel talked about how crazy that show was that year. They had a really packed show and it was one of the last VMA shows that featured rock music. He said that was a real rock show and Howard was a part of it. Fred said that it was as good as it gets back then. He said that was the night that the bass player in Nirvana tossed his bass in the air and knocked himself out. It was a great show.
Robin talked about seeing Howard's ass hanging out and thinking it looked like the moon with craters on it. She said it was a sight with the stretch marks and dimples. She said she was shocked that he showed it to people like that. Joel talked about how most of the talk was about Howard's ass.
In another clip from the MTV awards we heard some people talking about Howard being a jerk and how they didn't think he was a happening thing. Dennis Leary liked it. Some of the bands thought it was just dumb.
We heard a show clip of Howard talking about how there were a lot of people who didn't like him but there were some who were really cool to him. He said the rap stars were into it. He said that the band Metallica was mad at him for upstaging them. Howard said he didn't know that. He said that one of the guys kicked him in the ass so he kicked him back. Robin said they want their glory and fame and don't want anyone else on. Gary said that the band were mad because they didn't know that it was going to be Fartman and they thought they upstaged Howard Stern. Gary said he thinks that Howard will never be treated with respect. He said that some people are just too politically correct and they're told not to like Howard. Howard said they're all dicks.
Joel Gallen said that Howard's appearance is the number one non musical appearance of all time on the VMAs. He said that it may be in the top 5 of the best overall appearance of all time on that show. He said that he's pretty sure that anyone would say that. Don Buchwald said that has become a legendary piece of material in the industry. Don said that's what he thought about Howard doing and it wasn't just another performer making an appearance. He said it had a resounding effect.
Howard said it's something they still play on MTV and he really thinks that they could have had a hit movie with that script that J.F. Lawton wrote. He said that piece of TV reminds him of what Sacha Baron Cohen does today. He said that he kind of stunned everyone with that appearance. He said maybe that's the kind of movie they should have done with Fartman. Something real where he shows up to events like that. Kind of like what Sacha Baron Cohen did with Borat.
We heard from J.F. Lawton about the script he wrote. He gave a rundown of what the movie was about and how this guy becomes Fartman after some of his enemies give him a colonic with nuclear waste trying to kill him. He had written a part for a black woman who was a colonic therapist and he had Robin in mind for that part. Howard said he had some ideas for the movie and it would have been funny.
J.F. said that New Line wanted a PG-13 movie but he and Howard wanted an R rating. J.F. said that he had written Pretty Woman and that was rated R. He said he wrote Under Siege too and that was an R rated movie. He said that it was absurd that they wanted a PG-13 movie. J.F. said that was a huge battle and that led into the merchandising thing. He said they were thinking about selling the movie to kids and sell the merchandise and that was just a bad idea.
They played an old show clip where Gary was telling Howard that people were looking to sell their New Line stock based on what Howard was saying about this movie. Howard said that he can't do a PG movie and he's not going to water down what he does. He said he's known for doing bizarre projects and that's what he's going to stick with. He said that he might stay with New Line but he's not going to make a PG movie. He said the script is great and he's not going to make it PG.
We heard from Don Buchwald and Howard again about the deal they never made. Don said they never really signed anything to make a movie with New Line. Howard said that he decided to write a book after that deal fell apart. He said he had no idea that the book would become the movie. He said it may have been a blessing that the New Line thing fell apart. Howard said they were great though and they did have a lot of writers and scripts for him but it was probably his fault that it fell apart.
J.F. said that the script was good but the deal fell apart. J.F. said he was supposed to get paid for the script but he took the rights to the script instead. He said that Howard owns the story but he owns the script. Howard said J.F. still thinks the script might get made some day. He said it might get made but he may be too old to play the part. Don Buchwald said they could probably make that movie today.
We heard another old show clip where Howard talked about pulling out of the deal with New Line and he hopes that everyone pulls out of their stock. He said they can stick to making Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movies. Howard said other people told him that they should have gone with another movie company and it would have gotten made. Howard referred to a big movie producer telling him what he did wrong.
Jim Forbes said that the big producer he was talking about was Ivan Reitman. That led into a clip of Ivan talking about how he had gotten to know Howard from listening to him on radio. He said he met Howard one day and they thought about what they could do together. He said that Howard talked about the Fartman character but he didn't think it was a good idea. Ivan said he passed on doing the Fartman movie and told Howard that wasn't the way to introduce himself to the audience. Ivan said he had to pass on all of that and they had messed around with that script for about a year before it fell apart.
They played another old show clip where Howard talked about speaking to Ivan and how he had to turn down a lot of scripts. Howard had Ivan on the phone to talk about all of that. Howard said he was kind of in a weird limbo with New Line and he wasn't sure he wanted to do anything and he might be back to just reading scripts and trying to find a project. Howard asked Ivan why he never puts him in anything. He said he could have played Dave in ''Dave.'' Howard said Ivan actually did offer him a job in that movie but he turned it down. He wants to make his movie premiere in his own movie. Howard said Ivan warned him about this New Line deal but he didn't listen to him. Howard said Ivan thinks he's too high brow to do the Fartman movie.
Ivan and Howard talked about how they might work together on something eventually. Howard said he would suck the cellulite out of his ass the next time he sees him. He wished him luck with ''Dave'' and said he was hoping that the movie would bomb so he'd need him more. He said that dream didn't come true though. Ivan told Howard that his mentions on the air have gotten him more notice than anything else he's done in the past few weeks while out promoting this movie. Howard told Ivan to get to work on something for him. They went to break after that.
They played a show clip where Howard was talking about the week off they just had and how they were now on in Cleveland. Howard told the fans there that they might not understand what's going on for about a month. He told the listeners that they were replacing the other morning show and he knows they'll be getting letters at the station about that.
We heard from current Howard about the press conferences he used to do and why he did them on the air. He always thought it would be fun to do that and it became some of the best radio doing them on the air. He said he wanted to bring his audience into that and he didn't ant to talk to people off the air so he just brought it all on the air.
Tim Sabean said that they'd speak to anyone who came to those press conferences. He said Howard would get to the point right away. Howard said the hot TV reporter would come out and he'd ask her about her sex life so it was a lot of fun. They'd get every newspaper they could get up there and do interviews with TV shows, news papers and everything. He said they'd get a great turn out for those things too. He said in Cleveland it showed how big they were when they had so many people show up for the press conference. He said people loved it and it was a great way to show what the show had for them.
They played a clip from a news report about Howard's press conference in Cleveland. They played some clips from that press conference and talked about what the show is known for.
After that we heard Jim Forbes saying that Howard picked up another affiliate just 5 days later. That led into another clip of Howard and Robin talking about how big they were getting and how close they were coming to getting a national syndication.
Jim said that Howard went to Dallas for the first time in late 1992. They played another old show clip where Howard talked about the new station in Dallas. Howard made the announcement first thing on the show that day. Howard said hello to Dallas and said that they should be used to this sound... and Fred played a couple of gun shots. Robin pretended she didn't know what that was supposed to mean.
Howard said when he did stuff like bring a janitor on the air, no one else was doing that. He said now everyone has their interns and janitors on the air on their shows.
They played an old show clip where Howard broke the news to Robin that Ted had died. Robin thought he had a smile on his face but Howard said this was serious. Gary told Robin that there was a death in the family. Robin wasn't sure who it could be. Howard told her that it was Ted and Robin said that was her next guess. Gary and Howard said he died the night before. Howard said he as a real friend of the show and they loved Ted. Howard said they put a song together based on the character they had him play on the show as Mayor Marion Barry. They had him sing a song to the tune of ''Sittin' On The Dock of the Bay.'' Fred said they had to teach him line by line how to sing the song. Howard played the song which was ''Sitting On The Bay With a Pipe.''
After that we heard Fred talking about what a great guy Ted was. He said he loved him to death and he had such a great attitude about himself. He said he enjoyed the hell out of the guy. He said when he died it was one of those things that you felt for. He said there are some people you don't feel that much for but Ted wasn't like that.
We heard another old show clip where Howard did another tribute to Ted. He played some clips of Ted talking about doing the show and how much fun he had doing the show. Fred sang a song about Ted to the tune of ''Desperado.''
Jim Forbes said that story gave birth to the Wood Yi character they did on the show. That was played by engineer Steve Freed. Gary talked about how great Steve is and how he was like the mascot of K-Rock back then. Jackie talked about how he thinks that maybe it was Billy West who suggested that they have Steve do the character on the show. We also heard from Steve who said that it was Billy who suggested that they use his voice. He said it just evolved from there.
They played another old show clip where Howard was talking to Andrew Dice Clay about the Woody Allen thing. Howard told Dice that they made a little movie called ''Single Yellow Female'' and played the bit for him. They had Steve the Engineer playing the part of Woody Allen in the bit.
After playing the bit Howard told everyone who played Woody and had him come into the studio. Howard had Steve say a few words. Steve sounded very nervous and just about passed out. Dice told him to relax, it was just radio and no one was going to see anything. Howard said Steve agreed to do that character and he really appreciates it. They had him do some more of the voice for them and recreated one of the scenes from the bit with Dice. Howard asked Steve if he had any desire to go into acting. Steve didn't have much to say about that. Howard let him go a short time later.
After that we heard current day Jackie talking about how Steve would freeze up on the air. He said that he'd write scripts for Steve and he'd have to hand them to Howard first. Jackie said Steve's timing was fantastic. He said he would have to read the whole note before he'd read his lines. Steve said he would say his lines kind of subdued. He said that he'd say pretty much anything they wrote for him though.
They played another show clip where Howard was interviewing Steve as Wood Yi. They did an informal press conference as if it were Woody Allen. Howard asked him about having sex with this Soon Yi and what they do for fun. Steve would say his lines and get laughs from everyone in there. Howard and Wood Yi spent a few minutes going back and forth with the goofy questions. Howard said that Steve had rehearsed for about an hour before doing the bit. Howard said he is the most unusual performer they have on the show.
We heard from Scott the Engineer about that character and how Jackie would have to write the lines and Steve would never, ever improvise. He said if Howard asked him how he was doing and Jackie didn't write him an answer, then he wouldn't say a word. He said no words would come out of Steve's mouth if he didn't have anything written for him. He said off the air he wasn't like that at all. He said he'd scream in the hallways there at K-Rock but once he got on the air he just clammed up.
Jackie said that he and Fred used to be on the floor rolling when Steve would read some of the lines. He said it was another one of those things that they did once in a while and not every day. He said they never prearranged it either. They'd just do it on the fly.
Steve said that he doesn't use language like that usually but for Howard he'd do just about anything. Steve said he's an absolute mench and he'd try to do what he could for Howard.
We heard another old show clip where Howard was talking to Wood Yi about a statement he wanted to make about Soon Yi. They had Steve saying all kinds of racist jokes about her and what he'd like to do to her. Howard and Robin asked him questions and Steve would pause as he pre-read the line and then he'd deliver it in that very special way.
We heard from Gary about how he asked Steve to do the character and he wouldn't have done it for anyone other than Howard. Steve loves Howard so much that he'd be willing to do anything. Gary said Steve knew when he saw him that he was going to ask him to do the character on the air. He said it was kind of cute but Steve would do anything for Howard. Steve talked about how Gary would come in and ask him to do the character and they'd drag him in there to read his lines. Steve said he's always uptight but they made it through it.
They played another show clip where Robin was doing her news and did a storey about Woody Allen so that led to Howard asking for Wood Yi to come in. Robin read her story and Steve came in a short time later to do his character. They had him saying all kinds of funny lines and Howard was cracking up at them.
After that we heard Steve the Engineer talking about how many people have heard him and knew him from watching the TV show. They went to break after that.
They played the Helen Kushnick bit that Gary was talking about after that. In the bit they had clips of Helen talking to Howard about her job at the Tonight Show and then Gary Dell'Abate taking over for her there. They had Gary doing an impression of himself and doing the job that Helen was fired from.
After that Jim Forbes talked about how they had ideas on the show for entirely different productions. That led into a clip where Howard talked about hearing about some guys up in Main who were doing this Bongo Butts thing. He wanted to steal one good bit from someone else since people always steal stuff from him. He said that they'd try out the Bongo Butts thing on the show the next day.
Current day Howard talked about how the ideas come about because he's kind of pervy. He said he knows he got into this spanking thing and it may have been because he wanted something audible to do. He said that somehow came up with the idea of doing Wipe Out because it was something he could play. Howard said that song was great and he started to play it on someone's buttocks.
They played a clip from the show when Howard did the Butt Bongo thing for the first time. He had a woman bending over in the studio for them so she could be their bongos. Her boyfriend was there to play on her ass. Dee Snider was also there in the studio to watch. They played some Led Zeppelin for the guy to drum to.
After that we heard Robin talking about how she never understood why anyone would want to see something like that but it did work for the radio. Tim Sabean also talked about how Howard knew where to go with stuff like that and he'd never go over the edge.
They played more of the Butt Bongo show clip and the woman's ass turned bright red after the guy drummed on her ass. The woman said she did that just for Howard and she's not that type of girl usually. Howard said it was a beautiful thing that they had just witnessed. The woman said that she was kind of numb back there.
We heard from Howard who talked about the Butt Bongo Fiesta special they did. He said he liked it because he got to do his Ricky Ricardo impersonation on that special.
They played another old show clip where Howard told the audience about the special and told them to write in if they had any suggestions for what they could do on the special. They came up with some ideas on their own but they wanted the audience to participate as well.
Current day Howard talked about how this was probably the best tape they ever put out. He said he knew what to do after doing the channel 9 show. We heard from Dan Forman and Mark Cronin as well because they worked on that special. Mark said that Howard wanted to make a perfect channel 9 show episode without the censors. That's what this tape turned out to be. Mark said Howard went right into the project and hired everyone from the channel 9 show. He said they all came back and they did sketches just like they did on the channel 9 show.
Robin talked about the craziness that was going on with that special and how tough it was to put together. Jackie said he and Fred had a field day coming up with stuff. He talked about the bit they did with Gary playing a monkey and needing an elephant for the bit. Fred talked about the elephant shitting that day and how that's all he remembers. Ralph talked about how funny it was that Gary was in that monkey outfit. Gary talked about it too and said that it was shortly after he got married and he was kind of resistant to it at first. He said that he agreed to do it and it never really bothered him. Jackie remembered the segment where they had Gary eating out of a dirty diaper. He said he'd take blame, or credit, for that.
They played some of the Butt Bongo Fiesta bit where Gary ate from the dirty diaper. Then we heard from Howard who said that it's kind of a dated tape now but it was pretty wild. He said the 3D stuff was kind of cool and it was a great thing they did.
Jessica Hahn also talked about the bit she was in with Howard and the elephant and how scared Howard was of that elephant. She said she was glad to be a part of it all.
They played another clip from the tape where Howard and Jessica were in the sketch together. That led into an old show clip where Howard talked about how bad that tape was. He said that he hadn't watched it in about 10 years. He said that he looked horrible in it and he was wearing a ripped t-shirt and his arms looked like pegs. He said it was a big mistake to watch it.
They played another clip from the Butt Bongo Fiesta tape where Howard was tap dancing and singing about their Tribute to Vagina. Then we heard Dan Forman and Ralph Cirella talking about that tribute to vagina and how they did that. Ralph explained the goo they used to make it all wet looking. Robin also talked about how it ruined her dress because of the dripping stuff. They played a clip from Butt Bongo Fiesta where Howard and Robin were inside the vagina looking around.
Mike Gange talked about seeing Jessica Hahn in her see through outfit and how great that was. Jessica also talked about that outfit and how Howard wanted to get an on air reaction from the guys when she took the robe off. She said she didn't know it was all that provocative until Howard mentioned it. They played another clip from Butt Bongo Fiesta where she revealed that outfit.
After that we heard Howard and Mike Gange talking about some of the other bits they did for the tape. They had another bit they did where people had to sniff women's vaginas to figure out which one was theirs. They had contestants coming in and doing that.
Jim Forbes said that they also did a Guess Who's the Jew bit with Fred on that tape. We heard Fred talking about how tough it was to get the outfit that he had to wear. He said he doesn't own his own Nazi outfit so they had to rent one. He said they had to go to Queens and had to have a letter signed and dated about what they were going to use the outfit for. He said they had to say they weren't going to wear it outside. He said they weren't screwing around because some high school kids went out and stood in front of a temple one time. Fred said the FBI went to the costume place and said they had to control what people do with those costumes. Fred said Daniel Carver saw him back stage that day and Daniel thought he was a brother in arms or something. Fred said he was trying to hide from Daniel but then he caught him and walked over to him to shake his hand like he was his buddy. Fred said he just played along and gave him a thumbs up. Fred said he wishes they had caught that on tape because it was wild.
They played another clip from the tape where Howard did the Guess Who's the Jew segment. They had gone out to the streets and asked people what they wanted and they wanted more KKK guy. They played Guess Who's the Jew with Daniel Carver and Fred who was playing Kurt Waldheim Jr.
Next up we heard from Steve Grillo who said he had a girl who barked like a dog and he got her to do that for the camera at the end of the Butt Bongo tape. That led into another clip from the tape where Howard met that girl. She did the barking thing for them.
We heard from Howard again about doing the Butt Bongo thing on that tape. He said that was the wildest thing they ever put out. He said they got to see some naked women too. Mark Cronin said they did the Howardo Stern thing on that like a Spanish TV show thing. Robin talked about the bad voice she was doing for that bit. She said her accent was awful. Ralph talked about the make up he did for that and said Howard he did that Ricky Ricardo character during that segment. He said he thinks that all held up pretty good over the years.
They played some of that Butt Bongo segment where Howard was doing his character and Robin was doing her awful accent.
We heard Artie Lange talking about the tape and how the end of it is an elephant shitting and pissing while it's eating. They played some of that audio as Artie was talking about it. Artie said that was one of those things that they didn't think much of but then the women in the room walked out and the guys were cracking up watching it.
Fred said there's nothing like watching an elephant shitting in front of you in an enclosed area. He said it was awe inspiring. Ralph said that was such a pig fuck. Mike Gange said it was like the Hindenberg catastrophe because everyone scattered. Jackie said that he's never seen anything like that. He said the stream coming out of the elephant's dick was like a fire hose stream. He said it hit the tile so hard it splashed out like four feet. Jackie was gagging as he was describing the pile of shit that thing left. He said it was like a mountain of shit. He cracked up as he was telling the story. They went to break after that.
That led into a show clip where Howard was talking about being in Chicago for the first time. He had Robin say hello to Chicago and talked about how excited he was about being there. He said they were now in most of the top 5 markets in the country. Howard said they just needed San Francisco to be in all 5.
Gary said there were a lot of politics going on there and it was a tough market to crack. He said there weren't many stations willing to take a chance with a new show. Robin said that Howard was the real deal and some people had a hard time dealing with that.
We heard another show clip where Howard was talking about how Steve Dahl in Chicago was claiming that he was ripping him off. Howard said that they work for the same company he works for and they were bad mouthing him. Howard said that it's time for Dahl to go on a diet. He called him a big, fat slob and made fun of him for a few minutes.
We heard current day Gary talking about being moved to another station there and how they knew they weren't going to get the support they needed there. He said they were let go from the AM station and they were put on an FM station. Howard said they were even pulled off of that one after they went to number 1. Howard said they sold the station and they pulled them off the air. Howard said when Mel bought the station they were put on again but it was on and off a lot. He said they had a hard time getting a foot hold there in Chicago because of that.
Gary said he remembers being let go 4 days before the ratings book came out. He said they were number one or damn close to it. The guy who wrote the radio column there wrote about it being the biggest blunder in radio history letting him go.
They played a clip from a press conference where a guy was trying to get Howard fined and canceled from the station there because he didn't want his disease to spread to Chicago. The guy said he as a disease and Howard said that was fine. Howard said he was going to go after him and find out what kind of history he has. The guy welcomed that. Howard told the guy he can write all the letters he wants and he doesn't care. He said he'd be doing him a favor getting him off the air. Howard said he doesn't have to listen to the radio show and he should stop telling people what they should listen to. Howard told the guy to go home and beat off so the guy ended up leaving. Howard told him to drive home and speed up on the turns, see what happens.
Jim Forbes said Howard added 12 markets over the next 18 months. They played some clips from news reports about some of the announcements about the markets they were going into. They had clips of Howard talking about going into some markets and not being able to talk to the people directly because they didn't have phone lines set up. They had other quick announcements about Howard going into a bunch of new markets. They were talking about going into Albany, Las Vegas, New Orleans, San Jose/San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Orlando, Dallas and many more.
We heard from Tom Chiusano who said it was one guy who just taped the show every day and tried to find more things to get him fined over. That guy was Al Wescott. He was on a mission to get Howard fined and he would tape and transcribe the show and send them to the FCC.
Gary said that they got copies of the FCC complaints and he's saved every one of them. He said he knew that they were going to be history some day. He said it almost came to define them. He said they were the most fined people in the history of the FCC. Howard also talked about the fining and how the more popular you get the more notice you're going to get. He said he was on everyone's radar.
Next we heard a clip of Joan Rivers talking to Howard on her show where she was asking about the fines. Joan said that Madonna is in her book masturbating to a mirror and no one says anything about that. Howard told Joan he thought he was being targeted so the government didn't look ineffectual. Howard said Joan can say penis on her TV show and not have a problem. He can't do that. Joan brought out some girls who were going to collect some money for his fines. Howard went out to the audience and found a woman who wasn't a fan of his. There were a few women there who said they weren't fans and they never wanted to see him again.
After that we heard from Howard's mom and Fred about the fines. Fred said that everything on the show should have been fair game other than the 7 dirty words. Fred said he felt they were playing by the book and not doing anything illegal. Ben Stern said the FCC had the right to find for technical reasons and they moved into this profanity thing. He said that the world isn't going to come to an end over a word. Ben said that they had this power and they keep infringing on this stuff.
They played a clip from Howard's show where he was talking about the Los Angeles station being fined. He said that never in history has anyone been fined over something like this. He said that this was their first offense and they fined them $105,000. Howard said that's about what an FCC commissioner makes a year. Robin wondered where they came up with that number. Howard said that it was 11 pages of ''terrible'' things he's said and each fine is supposed to be $12,500 but that doesn't add up. He said the other money must be for the big parties they throw over at the FCC. Howard said he's not sure what's going on in America.
Jim Forbes introduced the segment that got a fine from a show in 1991. Howard was talking about making love to an Aunt Jemima bottle being as close as he's ever come to making love to a black woman. He was doing this while talking to Geraldo Rivera.
We heard from Geraldo Rivera after that. Geraldo said that Howard took the brunt of the entire talk show era with those fines. Geraldo said Howard was an easy target and an easy way to get a headline. He said that Howard was a very convenient punching bag and that was to the discredit of the FCC. He said there were far more obscene shows on the air that didn't get the notice that Howard did. Geraldo said there were a lot worse shows than Howard ever was.
We heard a clip of Howard doing an interview with Phil Donahue and Phil was reading some of the quotes that got him fined. Howard pointed out that he was taking them out of context. He said they were just trying to make people laugh on his show. Howard pointed out that Phil does things on his show where they talk about the same kind of things and they get away with it because they have ''experts'' on the show talking about it.
Next we heard current day Howard talking about how he was told not to say things like douche bag and scum bag on the air during his career. He said that they're meaningless but some people thought they were going to upset someone.
Billy West said that it's always the pioneer that has to take the arrow and that's the price Howard had to pay. He said Howard was trying to do a show and he had to deal with that shit when he got off the air.
That led into a show clip where Howard was calling his dad, Ben, to talk about the FCC fine thing. Howard said his dad was all worked up over the FCC fines and he wanted to talk about that. Ben said that this citation is very big and the fines are usually over meter readings and not over language. Ben said there are plenty of other things that are a problem out there like child abuse and things like that. Ben said that they don't fine over alcohol or cigarette discussions but that's a problem. Ben said that this is an easy agenda for them. He said they they're not doing anything about child abuse and this is just like a personal vendetta.
Howard said he wishes that someone would print the 11 pages of stuff they're getting fined over. He said people would laugh at it if they read it. Ben was also saying that kids aren't listening to radio at that time of morning so the claim that they're protecting kids is dumb. They spent a few more minutes going over that stuff and talking about how ridiculous the fines are. After letting his father go he played some of the family tapes where his father calls him a moron and things like that. Howard played a bunch of those clips and said those were supposed to be the ''fun'' days with the family.
They played a clip of David Brenner talking about being out on tour and coming on Howard's show to plug his gigs. He said he went back to do Howard's show once and in every city they had Howard Stern-like shows and they were all trying to do the same thing Howard was. He said Howard revolutionized talk radio. He said Howard became talk radio. They went to break after that.
Howard said Fran Shea had the idea for him to do an interview show. Howard said he agreed to do that. Lee said that they thought that would work well for Howard to just do a straight interview. Don said they had a small budget for this show and they just wanted to survive. Don said he said to them that no one knows about E! and they never will if they don't get Howard on that channel. He said he told them to give all of their budget to them and they would make the channel pop.
Jim Forbes said they had a press conference to announce the Howard Stern Interview on E! later that year. Fran said that it was great publicity for the channel and it ended up working out.
They played some of the audio from that press conference where they announced the new ''Howard Stern Interview'' show. They said it was just going to be a one on one interview and it was going to be a 30 minute show. Fran said it was a very predictable show in every way but one. That one thing was that it was going to be hosted by Howard Stern. Howard came out and talked about the exciting new show and how Fran and Lee would probably be fired if the show didn't work out.
Howard had to explain to the press it was just going to be a one on one interview show and no one else from the show was going to be part of it.
After that we heard a show clip where Robin told Howard he was going to put E! on the map and he was going to become that network. They also played a clip from David Letterman's show where Howard announced his interview show. He said it was great he had his own show but no one even gets E!. They were basically using Howard as publicity for this new channel.
Next up was Jim Forbes talking about how they had to find celebrities to interview on this new show. We heard from John Reiber who was producing the show. John said that Howard was a controversial guy to do an interview with so it wasn't easy to find celebrities to do interviews. Fran Shea said that it was a new thing and many of the people had been on his radio show but they weren't sure they wanted cameras on them. Fran said it added a dimension to the interview and no one knew what was really going on before that. She said it was very different than just an audio interview.
They played a promo for the E! interview show and then Jim Forbes talking about how the show premiered on November 27, 1992 with guest Garry Shandling.
We heard a clip from that first show Howard did with Garry Shandling. Howard asked Gary how he looked first thing. Gary said a lot of people told him not to do the interview. Howard said Gary is a big fan of his and he asked him to kiss his ass a little bit and tell him why he likes him on the radio and why he likes his TV career. Gary said that's what he was going to ask Howard. Gary said people were right and he shouldn't be there. Howard asked him to say that he was brilliant. Gary refused to do that.
After that clip they played a radio show clip where Howard said he got a fax about the TV show and it was from a reporter in Detroit. Howard said he got about 10 positive and one negative fax. Howard said the person over at E! told him that this person hated him before he even saw the show so that's why he got the negative one. Howard said that's the one he'll remember though. Howard read the reviews he got and he got a 3 star review from the Detroit Free Press guy. He said if you add up all of the stars he got about 15.
We heard from Don Buchwald again who was saying that Howard was asking all of his guests what they thought of him. It was very typical of Howard but it worked. Howard talked about some of the people he interviewed and how guys like Milton Berle wanted a meeting ahead of time. Milton wanted to rehearse the show ahead of time. He said he didn't pay attention to that and didn't listen to him when he asked him not to talk about the size of his penis. He said the first question out of his mouth was ''what about your penis?''
They played some of that Milton Berle interview Howard did for his E! interview show. Howard said Milton was a big fan of his and he knows that Milton is legendary for being very well endowed. Milton asked if he wanted to have a contest. Milton said he would take out just enough to beat him.
Fran Shea said that she learned to never underestimate Howard. She said that he can get more out of a moment than you'd expect. She said that he had the ability to know himself, know his audience and that was really big. She said she has worked with a lot of people and Howard was the most fun she's had. Fran said it was a great experience.
Howard said that was a fun experience for him and it was less effort for him than the other TV show he had done. He said that this was perfect for him. He said he did that interview show and it became a lot more work. He said he started thinking about doing sketches with people. He always wanted more than just an interview but it was fun to do. Ralph Cirella also got in on that and said that there wasn't much of a pre-interview with the guests. He said they'd do a bit once in a while. He said he did a vampire bit with Marg Helgenberger for her interview.
They played a clip from that Marg Helgenberger interview where Howard talked about this vampire thing he was going to do with her. Howard said he thought it would be good to do a love scene with her and this is the way he wanted to do it. They came out of a break and Howard was acting along to a scene from some movie with Marg. Howard said that was a big deal to act with a real actress. He said he was phenomenal and Marg was great too. He felt she had love in her eyes for him. She said she did and she forgot that her husband was even there.
Next up we heard one of the guys talking about the time they had Willie Nelson on the show and had him ranking his favorite drugs.
They played the E! interview with Willie and Howard after that. Howard was talking to Willie about his favorite drugs and had him ranking them from number 1 on down. They ran through all kinds of drugs like coke, ludes, heroin, pot, crack, Thai stick, acid, hash, mushrooms and more.
Jim Forbes said Howard interviewed nearly 40 celebrities for that show. Flavor Flav was one of them. They had Flavor talking about his interview for a few seconds before playing some of that interview. They were doing yo mama jokes for a few minutes in that interview.
Jim Forbes said that Howard found a flow with most of his guests but hit a wall with Richard Lewis. That led into a radio show bit where Howard talked about the tough time he had with Richard on that show. Howard was saying it was like Richard came in to do battle with him on the show. He said he'd ask Richard questions and Richard would interrupt and argue with him. He said he had to stop the show and tell Richard to let him ask questions or he'd have to leave. He said the executives there even came out and told him to relax.
We heard from Richard Lewis who said he didn't remember that interview. He said he may have been drunk. He said it's good that he was the worst because he must have had a reason for doing what he did.
They played some of that Richard Lewis interview from E!. Richard was telling Howard he looked thin and like an idiot. Howard tried to ask him some questions but Richard kept interrupting him. Howard threatened to throw him off the air if he didn't just let him interview him. Richard kept interrupting anyway. Howard had to threaten him one more time because Richard kept interrupting. He said he was going to take a break and he would kick him off the show if he didn't let him do his job.
Next up we heard Joan Rivers talking about how much fun she has doing Howard's show. She said it's a pleasure to do his show. She said that it's like playing tennis with him going line for line. That led to them playing some of her E! interview show. In that clip Howard said that Joan asked that they don't do any close ups so Howard mentioned that and said he'd like to see some close ups.
Next up was Janis Ian talking about her interview with Howard on that E! interview show. Janis said that Howard was brilliant with that. Gene Simmons also talked about how great Howard is but it's not the kind of interview that's going to be serious. He said that it's going to be a fun interview and you'll have a good time if you know that. They played some of Gene Simmons' interview with Howard on the E! interview show. Howard asked Gene to talk about sleeping with Cher and how that was. Gene talked a little bit about that.
Jon Bon Jovi also talked about Howard and how he's the original and there are so many imitators out there. He said that Howard is very unique and an icon of the radio business. They played some of the E! interview Howard did with Jon and the guys from Bon Jovi.
Mark Cronin said that Howard's E! interview show was after channel 9 and he was trying to show he could do something without Robin, Jackie and Fred. He said it was like a solo project. Robin said that they could all do projects on their own and she's not sure what to say about that show. She said that she thinks that he's more interesting than the people he's interviewing. She said that he's not just an interviewer. Robin said that he can perform and be Howard on the radio show and they can do more with that than just a one on one interview. She said that was the problem with that show. He had to make these people interesting.
Howard said he had already interviewed some of those people on the radio show so it was tough to do it again on that interview show. He said he found that it was less exciting.
We heard a radio show clip where Howard said E! wanted him for 5 days a week. He said they want him to do four hours a day. Robin asked if it's ever going to be less time on the air. Howard said it might be time for a change in a couple of years. He said that they will still do something but it'll be different.
Jon Reiber said that the original idea was to just put Howard's show on every day of the week. He said that they didn't have time to do something like that so it was impossible to do that. Fran Shea said that the interview show schedule was exhausting for Howard because he had to fly out to L.A. to do it. They did a year of shows and the contract was over. She said that they trusted each other so they proved that they would stick together. She said the only had one thing to do. Howard said he figured they could take the best half hour of the show and put it on every night of the week. That's how the E! show was born. They ended today's History of Howard Stern around 11:25am.
We heard from Tom Chiusano who was talking about what a big deal the ratings were and how he was kicking everyone's butt. He said it confirmed the bigness of the show. Joan Rivers said that no one is like Howard and it changed what people expected from a radio show.
After that we heard a news report from Los Angeles where the reporters were talking about Howard's big ratings there.
Then we heard Andy Bloom talking about how fast Howard's ratings shot up and within 18 months they were up to number one. He said they knew it was going to happen even though there were people saying that it would never happen. Andy said everyone knew where it was heading within 6 months.
Howard talked about how important Los Angeles was for them and how rapidly they shot to number one. He said he wanted to be the number one show overall, not just in one demographic. He said he wanted Hollywood to notice him and they did. He it was a very important market for him. He said nothing went wrong out there for them. He said he was told to shut up about the riots out there but he doesn't shut up about anything and that's why he does as well as he does.
They played an old show clip where Howard announced his huge ratings out in Los Angeles. He first had to get Fred to play the right music for him for this big news. They had trouble finding the right music so Howard gave up. Howard went on to say that they were number one in New York and now in Los Angeles. He said he did it in a year. Howard told Mark and Brian to eat him. He said they're dogs and good dogs do what they're told.
Andy Bloom said that they had planned a funeral out there after that short time they took to get to number one. Mark and Brian were the guys who they had to bead and they did that. He said they may have been distracted from their show by their TV show.
Robin said that Mark and Brian didn't get what they did and they weren't able to imitate the show very well so it wasn't a surprise that they were able to beat them. She said they were like non entities. Howard said that number one out there was very important to him and he's glad it worked out the way it did.
They played another old show clip where Howard played some song parodies that the fans had sent in about Mark and Brian. He had one that was to the tune of the Jefferson's ''Movin' On Up'' theme song. Howard said it was so bad that it was good. The guys almost threw it in the garbage but it was so bad they had to keep it in as one of the top 5.
After that we heard about the funeral that took place in Los Angeles. Jim Forbes mentioned some of the people who were there like Alec Baldwin. That led to a clip of Alec talking about doing the show back then and what was going on at the time. Alec said he found that Howard wasn't like the guy on the radio when he hung out with him off the air. He described what Howard is like off the air and how much he liked him. Alec said so many people have tried to do what Howard has done and no one has been able to do it. He said they're just not as good.
We heard a news report from an L.A. station where they talked about Howard's TV show and about his number one ratings out there. They talked about how his show pushes the envelope of bad taste. The female reporter also said that Howard demanded that they take their tops off to do an interview and they passed. She also talked about Howard's funeral in L.A. for Mark and Brian. They also played a quick clip of Tom Brokaw talking about the ''vulgar'' Howard Stern.
They played an old show clip from the show where Howard and the guys were out in L.A. for the big funeral. Howard was talking about the fans he came there for. He said he thinks that there was a helicopter that was going to be coming out and announcing something for them. They were inside for now but they were going to be going out on stage soon to do the funeral. Howard held a press conference inside and told them what he was there for. He gave them a statement and then took some questions. There were reporters like Penny Crone who were trying to get interviews with him. Howard told Penny that he's no fan of FOX and she was working for them at the time. Howard told Penny that FOX news is a joke. Penny was upset that she wasn't able to get a personal interview. Howard went off on her for a short time. She said that Howard doesn't care about his fans. Howard said that's right and he doesn't care about her. He told her this was a dopey report that she's doing now. He called her a dumb idiot.
We heard from Scott the Engineer about the Los Angeles funeral. He talked about where they held it, at the Hollywood Palace, and how big that was. Billy West also talked about that funeral and how many people were there. He said there were a lot of people who didn't know what hit them. Gary said it was a huge parking lot they did it in and they set it up the night before. He said he wasn't sure who would show up because people had to work that morning. He said he walked out and he was amazed at how many people showed up. He said they took the day off of work to see them and it was an amazing feeling. He said as far as you could see there were people.
That led to another old show clip where Howard and the guys went outside to do their thing on stage. Gary introduced Howard. He and Robin walked out on stage with Jessica Hahn. Jessica ended up getting topless for the crowd. Howard welcomed everyone to the fun and they had shut down Hollywood Boulevard for this. Howard introduced Robin, Fred and Jackie to the crowd. He then talked about beating Mark and Brian and how he had predicted this a couple of years ago. He said the press said it could never be done but they knew better. He said he as going to guillotine those guys at the end of this. Howard told them that their king had come.
We heard from current day Fred about that funeral and how the people out there were looking for excitement and entertainment and they were actually entertaining them. He said it was like a big, big party out there. Fred said Howard had convinced the audience that Mark and Brian were boring. Billy West said the crowd was great and all of the other stations couldn't believe what was going on. He said they couldn't believe that Howard didn't tell people the time and the weather out there and going to number one. He said Howard was asking why they had to do that and the station owners just thought that's what you had to do.
In another old show clip we heard Gary telling the crowd how great the show was and how he was living the life that he wouldn't be living without Howard. He said he wanted to kiss Howard's ass because of what he had done for him. Then Gary kissed his ass. Howard told him he should do that before the show every day. Gary said he would because he was the King. Jackie Martling got up and said a few words too. He said they were the Beatles of radio. He even got in a plug for a gig he was doing that night.
We heard from current day Jackie about the running gags they did and how they did things with themes and with Fred it was like Howard was the king in his court and it was all of these musicians and Jessica Hahn up on stage and Fred dressed up as a Martian. He said the whole thing didn't make sense but the pictures of it are priceless. Jackie said that was a great trip out there. He said they were number one on two coasts and it didn't get better than that.
We heard more from the L.A. Funeral where Fred said hello to his Earthling friends and talked about how Mark and Brian were dead and how cool the people of L.A. were. Flo and Eddie performed a song after that. They did a parody of one of their songs about Mark and Brian called ''So Crappy Together'' instead of ''So Happy Together.''
We heard from Fred who was talking about Jessica Hahn and the skimpy clothes she'd wear to things like this funeral. Fred said those were highlights for him when she'd show up in all states of undress. Howard also commented on that and said that Jessica would come over and give them naked shows back stage and she loved to show off her body. He said they'd ask her to get naked and she'd just do it.
We heard another funeral clip where Billy West came out as Larry Fine from the Three Stooges. Billy did that for a minute and then brought out Jessica Hahn. Howard asked her to take off her top and she did. The audience went crazy for that. She got completely naked after Howard told her to.
Andy Bloom said they did everything at that funeral they wanted to do at the Philly funeral. They had a guillotine and they chopped the heads off of some fake Mark and Brian's. He said they even had blood spurting out and it hit people in the first three rows of the audience. He said it was great.
We heard more of that funeral where the crowd was chanting to Robin to ''show your boobs'' over and over. Then Howard did the guillotine thing and chopped their heads off after he sang a song about them. He said it took a while for the blood to come out but it eventually did. The crowd got sprayed with the fake blood. He thanked everyone for supporting them there in L.A. They went to break after that.

After that we heard from Billy West about the Marge Schott character he did and how he came up with the voice. He said Marge would be drunk doing interviews and she'd just spew racist stuff. He did some of that voice as he was talking about her. He said that it was exaggerated of course. He said that they had fun screwing around with it.
We heard from Al Rosenberg about that as well. Al was talking about how great Billy was and how he'd push the show into another dimension with that kind of stuff.
Howard also talked about Billy and the Marge Schott character. Howard said that they were doing satire when he'd be yelling out the racist stuff.
Billy said he got a piece of paper one day saying he'd be responsible for the statements he was saying. He said he got that from Tom and Tom actually expected him to sign it. He said he took it home and ripped it up and pissed on it. Tom asked him where it was the next day and Billy said he told him he really put it on his desk. He said there must be an asshole college out there were you learn that kind of stuff.
That led into an old show clip where Billy was doing his Marge Schott character and wishing all of the nig*ers happy holidays. Marge was also apologizing for all of the things she's said on the show in the past. She threw out some more racist stuff about all different races. Billy had Jackie laughing his ass off at some points with his racist rants. He was singing songs and ranting about all kinds of people.
After that we heard from Gary who said that the characters Billy did all had a lot of anger in them. He did Marge Schott and the character Red. Jackie said that Billy could do anybody and it was hysterical.
That led into another old show clip where Howard had Wood Yi meeting the character Red that Billy did. Howard introduced the two and let them talk to each other a little bit. Howard spoke to Wood Yi about what he's been up to an had Billy cracking up in the background. Billy went into his Red character and tried to talk to Wood Yi but Steve the Engineer wouldn't respond since he didn't have lines written to respond to him. Howard and Red talked to Wood Yi about the young girls and Red gave him some advice and told him that school was out at 3. Howard had Red go out and get Marge Schott when Robin had a story about her in the news. Billy went into that character and talked about the stuff Robin reported in the news. He had Howard cracking up with the racist comments. Howard told her she had to get out of there and get Red back in there. Red commented on some of the news stories Robin was reading.
That led into another show clip where Howard and Robin were talking about Kathie Lee Gifford and the problems she had with her husband Frank. Howard was goofing on Kathie Lee and Frank. Howard was making Kathie Lee out to be evil and carrying the incubus. Howard said that would be great if she was impregnated by Satan.
Jim Forbes said in January 1993 Howard had an announcement about the birth of his daughter Ashley Jade Stern. That led into a clip from the show where Howard talked about the birth of his daughter and how he managed to pull through great. He talked about the thoughts of fatherhood he got after the birth and how emotional he got. He said that his wife gets very emotional too. Howard said his father never got that way but he does. Howard said he was thinking about doing a Super Bowl party but then the world was crystal clear to him after the baby was born and he wasn't sure he wanted to do that. Howard said he stayed home and just laid there and fell asleep on his own without jerking off. He said he's a better father when he doesn't do that. Then last night he laid down and didn't feel he needed to have sex by himself but he had to get to sleep. He said he was waiting to fall asleep but it didn't happen. He said he was tossing and turning and figured he had to do it to get to be able to sleep. He was having an argument with himself.
Howard said that spiritual side to him lasted about 2 days. He started to think about the girls that have been in the studio and the girls he's seen over the years. It was all flooding to him and the old Howard Stern took over. He said by Tuesday at 8 he was back to himself. Robin said it sounds like this is the only way he can sleep and it's a bad habit he's gotten into. Robin said she didn't think he was telling the truth about the masturbation thing but now she can't believe he's really doing it. Howard said he wanted her to think it was a bit he was doing but it's not. He said he's not an elevated person anymore. Howard said he would be if he didn't have that job.
After that we heard current day Howard talking about his kids and how he thought his job wouldn't affect his relationship. He said that they got a lot of attention because of who he was. He said he and his wife were able to raise the kids with very few problems. He said they had a pretty normal life.
Howard's mother Ray talked about how wonderful Howard is as a father, son, brother and uncle. She said Howard cares very much and he has the right values in life and she's proud of that. Howard's father said ''ditto'' to that.
They played another old show clip where Howard took a call from a guy who said that Jay Leno mentioned the birth of his daughter. Howard said Leno seems to be campaigning for him to be a regular on his show. He said he's been kind of decent to him. Howard said Letterman hasn't said anything about his daughter. Howard had the guy on the phone play the clip from the Leno show. The guy played it and Jay asks if there are any Howard Stern fans in the crowd. He gets some applause and some boos. Jay mentioned that Howard's wife had a baby and it frightens him what the kid's first words might be. Howard found it odd that he got yays and then boos.
We heard from Dee Snider about Howard's kids and how they had kids around the same age. Dee said they both had 3 kids around the same time. Dee said that they had 3 boys and Howard had 3 girls. Dee said that the last time they went over the boys were riled up from being around the girls. He said that his son Jesse and Howard's daughter Emily were hanging out but he's not sure if there was something going on there or not. He said Howard was mortified when they showed up and they haven't been over to their house since.
We heard from Jackie's ex-wife Nancy about this gift she bought for Howard's daughter. She said that she found this lamp that was ceramic and it wasn't very expensive. She said it was probably $40 or so and it was adorable. She said Jackie brought it in and Howard opened it up and hated it. She said that Howard wondered how much she could have spent on it and said that it should have been at least $100. Nancy said that the Teddy bear on the lamp was wearing a blue shirt and she didn't even notice that. She said she was accused of trying to pass her political views on to them by showing that even a girl could have something blue in her room.
Jackie also talked about that gift and how he doesn't give a fuck about that whole thing. He said it was very funny how they broke his balls on the air. He said that Gary used to worry about his gift for months ahead of giving it. Jackie said Nancy probably cared less than he did. He said that incensed Howard when he didn't care.
They played the show clip where Howard talked about that night light Jackie and his wife got him. He said it was blue and Jackie always does stuff like that. He said you get blue for a boy and pink for a girl. He said Jackie should have known that. Jackie said that was Nancy who bought it. He told Howard to call her about it. Howard said they also got the baby a polyester outfit. He said you're supposed to dress them in cotton. Howard said it was only $14.99 too. Howard said that's how much they care about him and his kids. Howard said Jackie is going to go home and beat his wife tonight. He imagined what that might sound like. Howard did his impression of Jackie beating Nancy up.
Howard said the night light was cute but it was blue. He said his wife liked it until she saw the Teddy bear was wearing blue. Then she pulled the outfit out and saw that it was polyester. He said that's like giving the kid a plastic bag to wear. Howard said you give the kid cotton or a cotton mix. The polyester is like wearing a leisure suit. Howard said it was nice they gave him a gift though. He said it is the thought that counts.
Howard said he knew Jackie was going to screw that gift up. Gary said he knows better. He said when his wife buys something he looks it over and makes sure it's a good gift before he gives it. Howard said Jackie's wife always screws up gifts. They talked about some of the other stuff she's given them over the years. Howard said a baby gift is something you have to be careful with. He said it was even worse that she left the $14.99 price tag on the clothes. Howard said Robin's outfits from The Gap had to have been close to $100. Robin said she figured the baby would like something soft. Howard told Jackie he gives him permission to slap his wife around tonight. He went off on Jackie about that for a few minutes. They went to break after that.
They played a show clip where Howard was talking about how miserable he was being out there because no one good ever shows up to the Grammy's. Howard said Mark Chernoff wanted them to do this. He ended up getting angry with Gary for being there and bothering him. Howard said he called Tom Chiusano and told him he waned to come back to New York and get away from that awful Grammy stuff. Howard said they didn't need to be there and he wanted to leave. Howard wanted to take a break so they could yell at Tom and Mark.
Jim Forbes said that Howard came face to face with Gene Simmons out there. We heard from Gene who said that they had lost one of the members of the band, Eric Carr, and Howard thought he could go on and make jokes about it. He said he called Howard out on the air about that and wanted to have some private time with him to teach him what men do to little boys when they misbehave. He said that Howard invited him and Paul on the show and he backed off then. Gene said Howard did step up and he's been a good boy since then.
They played another old show clip where Howard was talking about talking about his guy Eric Carr who had died. He said someone called the show and said that he was a big fan of the show and wanted him to talk about him on the show. Howard said he wasn't a big KISS guy. He said other than Gene and Paul Stanley, he doesn't know much about the band. Howard said he wasn't a fan of their music. Howard said when Eric Carr died and Robin read about it, he talked about how it was sad he died but it was nothing heavy. He was goofing on KISS and not on Eric. Howard said it was pretty harmless stuff. Gary said he made a joke or two about Eric too. Gary said his friend, who is in Cinderella, heard it and thought Eric would have liked it. They had the guy from Cinderella on the phone to talk about it. That guy reminded Howard what he said about Eric and one of the jokes was about how he looked bad and felt good just like a vagina. Howard said that was an old joke he was doing. Howard said he tried to be respectful. He said he knew the guy died and he didn't even know who the guy was.
Howard said he got a call from Gary and told him that Gene Simmons had just called him and said he wanted to punch him out. Gary said he gave him a speech and Howard said he's a very pompous guy. Howard said Gene thinks he's a real bright guy. Howard said he's really not a giant when it comes to brain power.
We heard from current day Howard about that whole thing and how he likes to work things out on the air. He said that would probably be enough. Gene Simmons also talked about how Howard is a decent guy and that might not help his rep. Gene said he's a decent human being and he did back off after he realized the error of his ways. Howard said he knows who he is on the air but not off the air. He said that's why he goes to therapy and tries to figure that out. He said when reality hits he doesn't know what to do.
They played another old show clip where Howard said they had KISS in the studio. Howard ended up talking to them and Gene told Howard he looked like Michael Bolton. Howard said Gene seemed pretty happy though. Howard had to talk to Andrew Dice Clay for a minute and then got to Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons. Howard brought up the problem Gene had with him and asked who was mad at him. It was mainly Gene. Howard told Gene he likes him and he doesn't know why he's so upset. Gene was upset about the comments Howard made about the late Eric Carr. Howard said he talked about him on the air when someone asked him to do that. He had a fun time and maybe Gene got some second hand information about what he said. Gene called Gary at home and threatened to kick his ass. Howard told Gary to get Gene threatening him on the phone so he could sue him. He said he really didn't need him coming after him. Howard said Gary called Gene back and tried to get him to repeat what he said. Gene knew that he was probably taping him so he didn't say it again. They spent a couple of minutes talking about what Howard does and why he does the things he does.
Next up we heard Jim Forbes saying that around this time they had another big name on the show. That was Jim Carrey. Robin talked about how she had seen him before he was on that show and knew he was going to be a big star some day. She said that Jim showed up to the Grammy Awards thing and he was on the sidelines asking to come on the show and talk to them. She said she knew they had to get him on the show and a few years later he was Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.
Howie Mandel was also out there on the Grammy Show. Howie talked about that appearance and how they introduced Jim as ''The white guy from In Living Color'' when he was on the show.
They played the audio of Howard talking to Howie Mandel and having Jim Carrey come on with him. Howard explained how Jim got the job on In Living Color as ''the white guy'' on the show. Howard said he does the white character in every sketch. Howard said that show is still doing well even after the Wayans started to leave. Howard said it's great that Jim stuck with it and the show is still doing well. Jim said that all of the Wayans left he show but there are still black people on the show. Howard said Jim went up a notch when they all left. Howard said it should be called ''In Leaving Color'' since everyone has left. Howard asked Howie and Jim to do some goofy voices for him. Howie wouldn't do it but Jim did one quickly. Howie eventually did his Helium Man voice for him. Howard threw them out of there after that.
They played a clip from the old show where Howard told Robin about this call King of All Messengers had made to a news channel as one of the people stuck in the building. Howard had King on the phone and said that he was all over the wire services that day. He said when they got King on the air he coughed and pretended he was stuck. King said he thinks that the cause of the explosion was Fartman's gas. Howard said they kept him on for like four minutes after that. Howard had King play the audio where they took King's call. He called in as ''Gary Dell'Amonte'' and told them that there were reports of a gas leak. He said they heard it was from a gas leak from Howard Stern's Fartman movie. The news anchor wasn't sure what had caused it so he continued to ask King questions. They eventually hung up on him. Howard said that was a great call. He said it's a classic.
Next up we heard a clip from David Letterman's show where Dave was asking Howard about this guy who calls up and mentions his name. Howard said there are many fans who want him to be successful and they call into shows like the Larry King show to get his name out there. Howard said the guy who started all of this was Captain Janks and it all snowballed after he started it. He said Janks has done some great calls and there's a big movement to get his name heard out there. Howard said he doesn't instigate this stuff but he likes it.
We heard from current day Howard about how sometimes it can make him cringe when he hears his name mentioned. He said the Long Island shooting was one moment when he cringed. He said that they said that the shooter was a fan of his and that turned out to be a prank. He said he loves those guys because they bring attention to the show. Howard said they also point out how bad the press is by doing that. He said they don't do any research. He said that they should look into it before they put these people on. Captain Janks would do those calls and he'd sound as good as any other caller they had on the line. He said he's sure if they asked why CNN and those kind of networks screen their calls so much better now, they'd probably say it was because of Captain Janks.
We heard another show clip where Gary told Howard about the King of Cable making a call to a news program after a plane crash. He called in as an NTSB official and threw Howard's name out there. King of Cable played that call for Howard and in it he said they were all listening to Howard Stern and Baba Booey so that's why it crashed. They cut him off immediately. Gary said you'd think they'd ask the guy a couple of questions before letting him on the air. Howard said it sounds like they can just call in and claim they're an expert and they'll let them on. Howard said King is trying to get them to pay more attention to the calls they take. He said maybe CNN is looking for comedy relief or something and that's why they let these calls through. King said he did a little research and got right through to them. He said he has a book with names of people he'd need to impersonate. Robin asked him who he would be if he called in during a hurricane. He had an answer immediately.
After that we heard Jackie talking about how he enjoyed those kind of calls and he loved that these guys were so voracious. Jessica Hahn also talked about how great Captain Janks was at doing his calls. She said he was like the Howard Stern of phony phone calls. Billy West said Janks was very ballsy and he would never have the nerve to do that kind of stuff. Billy said he got yelled at as a kid and he couldn't take it if he got yelled at like that.
They played a Captain Janks prank call he made to a news program saying that some fires were started by Howard Stern's asshole. The reporter said that was the wrong time to be making a call like that.
Mike Gange talked about how Janks was the first one to call in with calls like that. There were many copycats who came after him and they'd come up with stupid names for themselves. He said it seemed like C-Span was an easy target for them. He said he thinks that they took a lot of those phone calls because they got hammered all the time. Gange said he thinks they got call screeners just to combat those kind of calls.
They played another show clip where Gary was telling Howard about a new call they had from someone who had called into a Los Angeles station and impersonated a fire fighter. Howard got the guy on the phone and he was King of All Rednecks. He told Howard he feels that they don't check their sources very well so that's why he makes these prank calls. King told Howard the anchor person is one of Mark and Brian's buddies so he was incensed at him getting through. King called in as Ken Kallenbach from CalTran and told the reporter that it may have been a bomb which was one of Chevy Chase's movies. Then he yelled out Howard Stern and a bunch of Baba Booey's. The reporter was upset that he did that during a serious news report like that. They spent a short time goofing on the guy.
Next up we heard an interview Howard was doing on the Phil Donahue show and Phil was asking about the prank callers. Howard told him he thinks that people tune in to see his name mentioned sometimes.
We heard Howard talking about how much he loves phony phone calls and how he has a fond spot in his heart for them. He said they were going out and promoting the show. They were great, free commercials for the show. Howard said they were very valuable. Howard said the audience became pro active and they were spreading the word. Howard said they were key guys because they believe in the show so much they were getting the name out there.
Mike Gange said sometimes those calls would become news stories of their own. He said it all helped push Howard's name out there and to show what the show was all about.
Scott the Engineer talked about Ponce De La Phone's prank calls and how great they were. He said he was calling shows with clips of Robin that he had cut up. This was the first time stuff like that was happening. Scott said it was brilliant stuff and the calls were great.
They played a show clip where Howard played one of Ponce De La Phone's calls where he used Ben Stern clips to ask the reporter some questions. Howard said that was great and Ponce was brilliant. Robin said he could call into all kinds of shows with those clips. Howard said he had to hear that call again because it was so good.
We heard from Jackie the Joke Man who said that he did an appearance one time and no one showed up. He said that Captain Janks had taken 400 people around the back of the mall to make it seem like no one had shown up. He said it was another wonderful prank that Janks had pulled. Jackie said he loves stuff like that. They went to break after that.
Next up we heard Billy West talking about some of the weird stuff that fans would send to Howard. Billy said that they would watch some of the video that they'd send. He talked about the cowboy hat thing and how they came up with the ''nig*er hatin' hat'' idea. Robin said that Billy took that and ran with it every time it came up on the show. Billy said it wasn't racism to him. He said he was just calling it as he saw it. He said he was pointing out the grotesqueness of racism on the show.
They played a clip from the show where a caller was upset with Robin for going along with this racist stuff they do. He said he can't understand why she disgraces her race by hanging around these white people and saying all of this crap. Howard hung up on the guy. He said he couldn't take that. Howard said they report on bombings but they don't support it. They talked about country music and dancing and how it seems like that ''nig*er hatin' dancing.'' Billy was doing his impression of Grannie from The Beverly Hillbillies making some racist comments.
We heard Gary talking about this guy who sent them a song called ''Nig*er Hatin' Hat'' and they used it out in Cleveland when they did their funeral.
That led to them playing a clip from the show where Howard was playing that song ''Nig*er Hatin' Hat.'' Howard and the guys got a laugh out of that. Howard said if you ever see a black guy with a cowboy hat on you know it's at gun point.
Jim Forbes said that some of the markets didn't like what they heard and they would censor and edit the show. He said that this clip from March 4, 1993 was edited out of the show in Cleveland.
In the clip Robin was talking about a guy from the Cleveland Indians who had an outing in his back yard and had a bunch of other players there. They took a boat ride after dark and went out on a lake. They crashed into a dock and it killed them. Howard said he had written a song about that incident. Robin didn't feel good about that but told him to play the song. Howard played the song which was actually Howard singing to the tune of the Gilligan's Island theme. He was singing about the Cleveland pitchers who crashed and died. Howard had to give up on the song when he couldn't get the lyrics right.
We heard from Fred about that editing. He said that you have to do it for the right reasons. He said that if you don't know how to do a show like they do then they should keep their mitts off. He said that the only person who should be editing Steven King's books are Steven King. He said that Howard should be the only one editing his show.
Tim Sabean said that you don't go up and edit art and that contest Howard is doing is his art. He said Howard didn't want his content screwed with. Tim said they had stations censoring the show in various markets and Howard would go nuts when he found out.
That led to them playing a clip from the show where Howard talked about the Cleveland station editing out his song about the Cleveland pitchers dying. Howard said he just sang about the guys going out and crashing into a dock. Howard said he read an article about what a maggot and a scuzzball he was. He said that moron Doug Podell, the program director in Cleveland, potted down the song and edited the show. Howard didn't like that he was being censored like that and he didn't want Doug controlling his show like that. Howard said he knew what he was saying and he knew he was on in Cleveland so they shouldn't be cutting him out like that. Howard said he knows what he's doing. Gary came in and told Howard that the fans out there weren't even hearing this conversation. He said Doug was doing the same thing to this conversation that they did to the song.
We heard from Tom Chiusano about how they would let the stations decide if they wanted to censor out parts of the show. He said that they were on their own deciding if they needed to cut something like that out. Fred said that most of the guys editing radio shows shouldn't be. He said that some guys feel they have to do ''something'' with the show when they could just sit back and let it play. He said if they want to piss people off then they should just let them.
Gary said part of the problem is that the Program Directors had nothing to do in the morning with their show playing. He said Andy Bloom had a funny line one time when he asked how you handle their talent being 300 miles away. Gary said you just let the show go on and don't worry about it.
They played another show clip where Howard spoke to Doug Podell from Cleveland and asked him why he was doing what he was doing. Doug said he didn't realize the magnitude of the situation out there. Howard said he made it worse by potting down the song. Doug said it was a very sensitive thing. Howard said he doesn't care if it's insensitive. Howard said no one is saying they don't feel bad about this tragedy. Howard said it's wrong to pot down the show when he's talking about something. He said he made things worse by doing that. Doug said it was just bad timing out there to be doing that. Doug said it was a no win situation. Howard said it's always a win situation when he's doing his show. He asked Doug who he's protecting. He said the listeners can handle it. Doug said it was getting bad out there and he was trying to protect people that he'd rather not talk about on the air. He said it was starting to blow up the day before he did the song so he was trying to keep it from getting worse. Howard told Doug to leave his show alone and let him get into trouble if he does. He doesn't care.
Jim Forbes said that Howard was furious about this and he enlisted a new program to help out. Tim Sabean talked about the CIA-Holes they had out in all of the markets to snitch on what the stations were doing. Tim said that there was nowhere to hide with anything they did with the show. Tim said that they'd become ridiculed by Howard if they did something wrong.
Gary said that they would call the board ops and they would lie to them when they asked about them doing stuff they weren't supposed to do. Gary said the CIA-Holes were great and they were like tattle tales. He said he had badges made up and he had their names and phone numbers so he could call to make sure things were going okay. He said it worked great because they all knew they had people listening and reporting back.
They played another old show clip where Robin was reading more about the baseball guys who had died and Howard said that Doug Podell should pot down the show again. He said he really felt bad for the families of those guys but he does wonder what those guys were doing on the boat at night and possibly drunk. He said that's as bad as drunk driving. Howard said he doesn't get why they would be doing that when they have families and kids to take care of. Howard said he only wishes that Tom was on that boat.
Robin had to run out of the studio for some reason. She said she was having a problem and ran right out of there. Howard said it sounded like a serious thing. Gary said she was smiling and walking quickly to the bathroom. Gary said she may have had a stomach thing going on. Howard wondered if he should end the show. Gary told him to play some phony phone calls or something. Howard said he could take some phone calls. He took one call from a guy in Vegas and Howard could hear that they were playing a news report instead of his show. Howard got pissed and wondered why they were doing that during his show. Gary came back and told Howard that Robin wasn't in a good mood.
Howard said the station out there in Vegas is insane. Howard said that they keep playing news during his show. Howard said that pisses him off. Howard hung up on the caller. He said that he can't control the affiliates and he's tired of this.
Howard took a call from a woman in Cleveland who said that she doesn't like the way Howard is handling it. Howard said he's trying to point out this mistake they made and how other people shouldn't be running around drunk on a boat. The woman asked why he did a parody song about them. Howard said she didn't even hear it so how can she comment on it? She said it was in bad taste but hadn't even heard the song. Howard hung up on her after she called him a jerk.
Robin came back so Howard said the listeners were taking bets and guessing what went wrong. They thought it was diarrhea. Robin said that's what it was. She said she was fine and all of a sudden it hit her. She said that it didn't help that they sent 5 people back there to ask if she was okay. Howard said she would have been pissed if she had passed out and they didn't check on her. Robin said she was in pain but she was afraid she was going to have an accident so she had to run to the bathroom. She said she didn't have an accident so she didn't have to throw out her underwear. They went to break a short time later.
They played a show clip where Howard was talking about the new fines and how he didn't want to say much about them but it was getting out of hand. He said it was starting to look like a personal vendetta. Howard said it was laughable. He said the fines rack up over a million dollars. Robin said that he hasn't even done anything and people have killed and gotten less of a punishment.
We heard from current day Howard about the new fines and how they had to edit stuff out of Best Of and stuff. Then the delay button got longer and he had more meetings about content. He said that it creates a fearful environment and it begins to wear on you.
They played a show clip where Howard was talking about the fines with Pat Cooper and Pat was saying he had to fight them and not pay those fines. Howard said there was no fighting it because they won't let him go to court over it. Howard and Pat went back and forth on it for a few minutes.
They played a clip from Phil Donahue's show where Phil agreed with Howard on the FCC fines. He said he doesn't think it's a good idea and he supports Howard in his fight against them. Howard wanted to kiss Phil on the lips for saying that.
They also played a clip of Larry King talking about the fines and how he thinks that anyone could do what Howard does in the morning. He said that they just have to tell him what he can't do and he'll just do it. Like it was that easy. Larry's guest thought that Howard had a nimbleness with his show that no one else does. Larry said he never heard it. He said Howard is very calculated and it's not that off the cuff. Larry said he sits with writers every day. Larry said he's never had writers. He said that Imus is a talent.
They played a clip of Imus talking about the FCC fines. Imus said that Howard is stupid and that's it. He said he doesn't think that he should be punished for what he's done though.
We also heard an interview with an FCC guy about the fines and he was saying that they felt that the material was actionable. He said that sometimes when people go through this they become more popular and not less. He said that they'll have to see how it plays out. The FCC guy said he's worried for the society when Howard Stern is number one on the airwaves. The reporter asked him about the comments Howard made about his cancer surgery and how he was doing. The FCC guy said he had prostate cancer and he was able to catch it early. He said Howard said he hoped the cancer would kill him and spread to the other commissioners. He said that has nothing to do with their fines though. He said that the fines are for things he's said on the air that they felt were actionable.
We heard from Dee Snider again. Dee said that Howard likes to make himself seem very innocent when he does something that someone gets upset about. He said he'll turn it around and make it seem like he didn't do anything.
They played another show clip where Howard said he read what the FCC was fining him for and they've really gone overboard. Howard said the FCC was going to let them buy new radio stations and fine them anyway. Howard said they're not going to pay $1.1 million in fines but they went through with it anyway. Howard said he read about what they're fining them over and it was over talking about shaving body hair. He said there wasn't even anything sexual in that. He said he's not sure what it is that's indecent or obscene. Howard said all he did was talk about how he likes his wife shaved and they fined him over that. Howard said he shaves the backs of his arms and he's wondering if they're going to fine him for that. Howard said they're going after him with a vengeance. He said they don't even have anything good to go after them with.
Howard said they fined them for talking to Tom about a vibrator and Jackie yelling out something about Tom using it on his son. He said he thinks that they have to fine him so it looks like something is going on there at the FCC. Howard and Jackie said they read that stuff and think about how funny it was and how they could improve it. They're supposed to be reading it to see what they're doing wrong and they just think it's funny.
After that we heard Jim Forbes saying that Mel Karmazin realized he had to take control over what they did on the show. Tom Chiusano said that he got a call from Mel about how he had to come in and monitor the show so they could edit it out to avoid the fines. Tom said he thought it was going to be a short term job but it turned out to be something Howard hated from the beginning.
They played a show clip where Howard talked about the ideas they had for keeping an eye on the show and how they wanted to have a headphone set up so Tom could warn Fred that Howard was going in the wrong direction and he could change subjects. Howard said he didn't get into radio to do stuff like that. He said he'd rather be out of the business. Howard said Tom thinks he can do a radio show but he could never do it. He said just suggesting something like that to him shows he's a retard. Tom came in and said he's right about him not being creative. He said that he realizes he should come in and burn incense at his alter. Howard said Tom doesn't get it and he doesn't know what it's like to be in touch with what people want to hear every day. Howard said that he knows what the audience wants to hear. Tom said that doesn't mean he's perfect. Howard said Tom wouldn't know because he has no gift.
We heard from Gary about the whole monitor and how they had a lawyer there for a while. Gary said that Howard was pissed about that. They got rid of that person and brought in someone else how worked for them and no one was good enough to push that button. He said Tom was the most palatable of the group. He said they had respect for Tom even if it didn't sound that way all the time. He said he felt sorry for Tom because he had to work 12 hour days and it was like he was working two jobs.
Tom said Howard would get upset when he'd hit the button and he'd stop the show. Tom said that Howard would come out of the studio and he'd tell Howard he felt it was over the line and they'd argue over it.
Howard said Tom would guess at what was indecent and talk to him about that. He said he never had to have a dialog with a general manager before but he had to do that with Tom. It made him second guess what he had to do.
They played another show clip where Howard started the show talking about what they had coming up. They worked on a new bit that they were going to play. He said it was a Kathie Lee bit and it was a remake of ''Rosemary's Baby.'' Howard said Tom even had a hand in that and Tom is the reason he's going to leave radio. He said he didn't want to talk about that though. He said Tom was busy editing their stuff that stupid moron that he is. Howard said Tom is unbelievably stupid.
Gary said Tom was out in the hall wondering if he should come in. Howard told him not to but Tom came in anyway. He said Tom was busy snooping around trying to find out what they were working on. He said you think Tom is a nitwit but he finds this stuff out.
We heard current day Robin talking about who they found out about the button pushing thing. She said that it became a bit on the show so they could get some material out of it when he did hit the delay button. She said that they could deal with it in an entertaining fashion. Gary said that Tom got the joke most days but then some days he didn't get it. He said it kind of sucked but it ended up bringing them even closer together as a show. Fred said that Tom is a good Catholic boy and he may not have felt so good about taking on that role. He said he probably had mixed feelings. Tom said he only based his feelings on what was indecent by what he felt the FCC would find indecent.
They played another old show clip where Howard was talking about Stuttering John being in the bathroom again. Gary said this was the third time that morning he was in there. Howard said he shaved his buttocks area and he was loving it. He said he no longer has stuff stuck in the hair back there. Howard said he has a buzzer he uses to shave the hair back there. Howard said he has an extra one he uses back there. Howard explained how he shaves back there and said he can't stand body hair. He said he hates the way it looks. Howard said he puts a towel down and puts one leg up on the counter and spreads completely. He said he's open for action. Howard said he takes the clippers and looks in the mirror to see what he's doing. He said the hairs fly out. He said he used to have a mess back there but that's all gone now that he shaves. He said the hair holds stuff there. Howard said it has a straight shot out now. Gary said it sounds kind of gay the way he described it.
Jackie asked if he locks himself in the bathroom. Howard said he double locks his bedroom and bathroom doors. He said he doesn't need the kids walking in on that. He asked where Stuttering John was. He was still in the bathroom taking a dump. John came in a short time later and said he went out and drank a lot over the weekend. That's why he had the problem. John said he just got out of the bathroom and he was feeling bad. Howard said he looked bad too. He didn't get why he would drink like that. Howard told him he should mellow out. Fred kept playing farting and vomiting sounds while they were talking about that.
Tom Chiusano came walking in and tried to change subjects. Howard told him to get out of there and asked if he was nuts. He got back to John's bathroom story and tried to get back to it but he was so distracted by Tom that he wasn't able to get into it again. He said he's never had a guy come in and try to change a topic like that. Howard said he hasn't had something like that happen since Pig Virus. He couldn't believe he was such a knucklehead. Howard said he hates the business. He said he used to get along with Tom but now he can't get away from him.
Current day Howard talked about how they started to censor the show and how that was scaring the affiliate stations. He said they were talking about pulling licenses and stuff too. Howard said if he was an owner of a station that was worth millions he'd be nervous too. Howard said the stations started to tremble and they started to edit the show. He said they did that in every market. Howard said Tom would do his edits and the local guys would edit even more. Howard said he hated that and it was torture for him.
Tom Chiusano said that it became his regular job and there were meetings and arguments and phone calls about it all the time.
They played a show clip where a Cleveland caller told Howard that his show was being cut up. Howard cut the guy off and said he saw that Tom was up to his censoring. Howard said he wanted to be fired from that job because he hated working there. He asked Fred to fire him. He said he hates working with nitwits. Howard said he must have said ''wipe'' or something and Tom hit the button. He told Fred to play a bunch of fart sounds for the next hour. Fred played fart after fart and Howard said that was going to be the rest of the show. He said he really has to go home because he can't do this anymore and can't work with Tom Chiusano anymore. They went to break a short time later.
We heard Jim Forbes talking about how Howard was landing the big headliners and he got Robert Blake and OJ Simpson in 1993. Howard said he loved that he had OJ in the studio. He said that Robert Blake was also a really hot head. He said he got really scary during the interview and told him he wasn't his monkey and stuff like that. Howard said the guy was a bundle of nerves and very angry. He said he almost got violent in the studio and he got kind of panicked with him in the studio. He said he felt sad for the guy because he couldn't clown around and have fun. Robin said he was one of those guys that just didn't get them at all. She said things got very tense in there.
That led into the show clip where Howard interviewed Robert Blake. Howard and Robin talked about how scary he looked. Howard said he looked pretty scary when he came into the studio. Blake started off cursing right away. He wasn't aware he was on the air already. Howard told him he was a pretty scary guy but maybe it was because he was a little guy who had to prove himself all the time. Robin said he was in that movie ''In Cold Blood'' and he was scary in that and he didn't appear to be acting.
Howard asked Blake why he didn't like doing the Tonight Show and why he kept doing it. Blake said he isn't sure why he did that. He was trying to explain himself but Howard kept interrupting. Blake told Howard to shut up for a minute. Howard asked if he was doing the John List role because he was trying to self destruct. Blake said it was an acting job, that's why he was doing it.
Blake didn't like the way Howard was asking him questions and then talking to Robin instead of talking to him. Blake was getting upset about the way the interview was going and he wanted to talk to one of the other guys instead of Howard. He threatened to walk out. He told Howard he's not a monkey and he may be used to having them in there. He said that he's not one and he's ready to walk out. Blake said he thinks Howard is groovy but he's wondering why he's there. Blake had never heard the show before so he didn't know the way things worked.
Howard had to take a commercial break but he said he might have to leave the studio so he doesn't get into it with Blake. Howard said he had a woman on the phone who says Blake saved her life too so he had to get to that. He told Blake not to feel bad if he had to walk out on the show. He just wanted a warning. Blake said he feels that they could do the show better without him there so that's why he was ready to walk out. Howard said that wasn't the case... well, it really was, but he wanted him to stay.
We heard from current day Howard who said that Blake wasn't a likeable guy. He said OJ was even more of an enigma than that. He said OJ is absolutely charming. He said that they say Hitler was great with children and dogs too. Howard said he hung with OJ at Donald Trumps wedding and he was the life of the party. He said that was even more of a shock for him than Blake was. Howard said they had just a couple of minutes with OJ and they got a bunch of great clips that they play on the show.
Fred talked about having OJ on the show and the short interview they did. He said later on when it was alleged that he killed someone and they took his responses and chopped them up to make the interview they really wanted to hear. Some of those sound effects stayed with them. Fred said he would play those clips when Robin would read stories about guys who were killing their wives and stuff like that.
Robin talked about how they treated OJ in a manner that was beneath them. She said that they knew that he was a wife beater at the time but didn't mention it. She said they were very light hearted with him and a couple of years later he killed some people.
They played the OJ interview clip after that. OJ was up at the station and just dropped in on the show. Howard said he was a good looking man. OJ said it was an illusion of youth. He talked about doing the Naked Gun movies and a new one that they were doing. During the interview the clips that Fred has played over the years came through loud and clear. Howard talked to OJ about his wife and how much of a knock out she is. OJ said that was his girlfriend and his ex-wife was the woman he was talking about. They spent a few minutes talking to OJ and joked around with him about dating Robin and things like that. Howard told OJ to take a look at that chest on her. OJ gave a little ''Ooo'' when he saw that.
Howard asked OJ about his divorce and stuff like that. Howard said he can't imagine a woman leaving him. OJ said that it was never sexual stuff. He said that it was never over that. OJ said that his current girlfriend is a model. They wrapped up with him a short time later. Howard said that might be the last time they ever see the guy. He said he's got some life going. Robin said all you have to do is play football for a few years and you can have that life. Howard said he's thinking about training and going to play.
Gary came in and told Howard he couldn't believe the shape the guy was in. He said he hadn't played for like 10 years and he looked like he was ready to play tomorrow. Gary said he's a good looking guy too. Howard said his girlfriend is beautiful too.
They played a show clip where a caller gave them the ''Mama Monkey'' name. Howard told Fred to have Billy do one of them for the show.
They played an interview that Howard did with Joan Rivers on her show where he talked about how he loved to tell stories to people. Jim Forbes said that some of those stories weren't true either. Like the story that he was in Vietnam. Scott the Engineer said they all knew those stories were fake but some people believed them. Billy West said that he's known guys like that who claimed they were in Nam and they were really just making stuff up. He said he loved when Howard did that stuff on the air. Billy said the stories were absurd and you could hear Jackie writing down his jokes and laughing as Howard would bring them up. Billy said he gave Howard some ides for those stories too.
They played a show clip where Howard was talking about being in Vietnam and how it was a pretty place. Howard said he got there with the other grunts and he was doing his first tour of duty. He said he was in the Army and Robin asked him some questions about what service he was in and stuff like that. Howard told his story as Fred was playing jungle sound effects. Howard said there were guys there who had the smell of death on them. He said they would run across kids in the jungle and they'd throw them candy. He said one guy threw the kids some flash pots that looked like candy and the kids hands would burn. He wondered how the guy could be so cruel. Howard said after you do a tour of duty then you know why they do stuff like that. Howard said you have no feelings for anyone and you want to kill everyone. He was making all of this up of course. Howard said he was a nut and on his second tour of duty he started to love the killing. He said one day he was out scouting and he killed a dog and then killed the tree it was urinating on.
Robin called Howard out on those stories and said that she knows damn well he's never been out of this country. Howard told her to hush up. He said he lived in a tree house over there and they lived on cooked Gook for six weeks. Howard said he's a survivor and he could live out in the jungle no problem. Howard said he misses his buddies like Nick... Nick O'Time. Gary had a guy on the phone for Howard. Howard took the call and the caller said he loves him but he has to get off of this Nam stuff. Howard said he has to know he was there. The caller said he was in the bunker next to him out there. Howard said he finally has someone who can back up his stories. Howard and the caller shared some stories about being in Nam. The caller said they never killed any women or children. Howard said he did. He said when he got one with his second tour of duty he got spit on. Howard asked the caller if he knew this guy Clint Torres. He said his name was too controversial to put on the wall.
Howard told the guy that he was the one who put a grenade in a cow's mouth and sent him into a school full of gook third graders. He also said he has boots made of gook ass skins. He said they're yellow with just a little hair and a lot of zits. He let the caller go after that.
They ended today's History of Howard Stern around 11:10am.
Howard later talked about the girl Seinfeld was with possibly being a 17 year old. Howard said Jerry can get any girl he wants and he's not sure why he'd go for a 17 year old. Howard thought about Jerry hanging around with a 17 year old and her parents and how odd that would be. Howard said he's not sure what that guy is up to. He said he has to find out. Howard told Gary to call Jerry to find out. Robin said she was wondering how that was working. She said she believes that he is capable of it though.
Gary got Jerry's answering machine so he told him they were trying to speak to him. Howard took the phone and told him to pick up so they could talk to him. Howard said he wants to know if he's really dating a 17 year old. Jerry picked up so Howard put him on the air. He asked Jerry if he was really with a 17 year old. Jerry was out of breath from exercising. Jerry told him this was very unprofessional. Jerry said she wasn't 17 years old. Howard tired to find out how old she was. Jerry wasn't talking. He was just denying that she was 17.
Howard asked Gary who the people were that were calling in saying they were 17. Gary said they were just fans calling in. Howard and Jerry spent a minute talking about this hot chick and how people were staring at her at the game. They spent a minute on that before Howard let him go. Howard said he thinks Jerry would have admitted it if he was really dating a 17 year old. He said he got a call from Carol Leifer who said she's actually 11.
After that we heard current day Howard talking about the Seinfeld show and how his TV show wasn't doing very well at first. He said that Jerry started coming on the show to promote it and he knew that he'd stop once it got big. Howard said it was unbelievable to them that Jerry was dating this 17 year old though.
They played another old show clip where Jerry called into the show to tell Howard about all of the news about him dating this 17 year old. He said that he wasn't dating this girl. He said he just went to a basketball game with her. Jerry said he's amazed at what people believe when they read it. Howard and Jerry talked about this girl and Jerry was saying that he had to go back to L.A. so it wasn't going to last. He said he knew she was young too but didn't know she was in high school. Howard said you read about Woody Allen being with a young girl and that's kind of weird. He said that it must be embarrassing for Jerry to ask out a girl like that and have to go see her parents. Jerry said he didn't have to do that and he doesn't even know anything about her personal life.
Howard said that he can imagine Jerry picking this girl up in his limo. Jerry said he never takes limos. He said he hates them. Howard said he can imagine him popping out with flowers from the limo to impress this girl. Jerry said he doesn't do that kind of thing. Howard asked Jerry about dating a high school girl and if he has to go to her house and ring the bell to pick her up. Jerry said this was the first girl he's dated that was that young. He said they met at a restaurant so he didn't meet her parents.
Howard asked Jerry if that romance is over with. Jerry said nothing happened so it didn't really matter. Robin asked if he kissed her. Jerry said he doesn't need to discuss if he did anything with her on the date on their ''horny little show.'' Howard said Jerry is going to freak out when he gets a hold of her to interview her. Jerry laughed and said ''yeah, sure.'' Howard asked if he's going to drive his Porsche past day care centers. Jerry laughed.
They had current day Gary talking about Janis Ian coming on the show and the song they wrote about Jerry dating the 17 year old. Gary said they came up with the song and he said that it was actually his idea to do a song about the 17 year old so that's one of his proudest moments from the show. We heard from Howard about that very quickly too. Then we heard Janis Ian talking about doing the Stern Show and singing that song with Howard. She said she took a lot of flack for appearing on the show. She said Howard was lovely to her until they turned on the microphone and Howard became a rabid dog. She thinks they wrote that song just to see if she would walk off the air. Howard said he always panics when they do a song like that because he's afraid she's going to walk off the show. He said that's what's so creepy about those things. Janis said she just played along and had fun doing it. Jackie talked about how the parody fit her song ''At Seventeen'' and it just worked.
They played the old show clip where Janis came on the show and sang that song with Howard. Howard said he was going to sing it but if she wanted to jump in, she could. Janis said they hadn't even typed it out. It was all hand written. They got set up and went into the song ''Jerry's Girl Is Seventeen.''
After that we heard Janis Ian talking about how Jerry hasn't had her on his show and Howard hasn't even had her back on his show after that. She said she's not sure if Jerry dislikes her for doing that. Howard said he's pretty sure Jerry was bothered by the song. He said it was a good song though. Gary said he thinks Jerry tolerated them to help promote his show and he really didn't need them after that. Jackie said it was fun but it may have pissed Jerry off. He said he hopes that he got over it and thought it was kind of funny. He said it could go either way.
They played another old show clip where Howard talked about how the E! show asked some celebrities if they would say a few words about him. They tried to talk to Jerry Seinfeld and they were told he was very upset about the Janis Ian song parody. Robin said Jerry once told her that if something was funny he didn't have a problem with it. Robin said she heard he's still seeing that girl. Gary said he heard that they have beepers and they type in messages to each other all the time anywhere in the world. Howard had some fun with a beeper sound effect and goofing on Jerry about that.
Howard said they should play the song again if he's really mad at them over it. Howard said he can't believe he'd get that upset about the song. Howard said he talks about everything that goes on in his life and he gets upset when someone talks about it?
They played an old show clip where Howard played the audio of Stuttering John going out to interview Eric Bogosian at a book store. He was promoting his book and John said it was so boring when he was reading his book that he had to walk out and wait for him to finish. Howard said Eric is a performance artist so he does weird stuff in his act. Howard said John went up to ask about that stuff. John said he asked Eric some question and he asked him to come to the back of the store and then threatened to kick his ass. He said he had his fist up on his neck and he was pointing it at his chin. John said he had the tape rolling and the tape recorder ended up getting broken.
John told Howard he told Eric that he didn't think he was going to hurt him. He was stuttering up a storm talking about this incident. He said a security guard showed up after that. Howard took over and played the audio of this whole thing. John was trying to speak to Eric but he didn't want to talk. John asked him why ''Talk Radio'' bombed. Eric grabbed him and told him to come with him for a second. Then he grabbed him and pushed him up against the wall. The guys spent a minute talking about that.
We heard current day Stuttering John talking about how he got slapped by Raquel Welch one time. He said that he was trying to ask her ''Are they drooping yet?'' and she ended up popping him in the face over that. He said he remembered Andrew Dice Clay being on the phone that day and talking to him off the air about it. Dice asked him if he was going to let the whole world know that he was punched out by a chick. That's why he never did sue.
They played the old show clip where Howard brought John in to talk about getting punched in the face by Raquel Welch. Robin thought it was funny when John told her who had punched him out. John said she didn't say a word to him before she popped him in the face. He said she turned around and got in her limo. John said a bunch of people saw it and couldn't believe that she hit him.
Howard read the questions that John was going to ask. He never got to any of them though. Howard said they had questions about her daughter having bigger breasts than her and things like that. Scott the Engineer came in with the tape of the interview. He said he would have been done earlier if John didn't curse so much. In the clip Raquel did say hi to John at first. Then he asked if they started drooping yet and he got nailed in the face. Howard wondered where her sense of humor was. John said that her face is really ratty but her body looks great. He said he's not sure why she'd get so pissed off at him. Howard said he was insulting her breasts. Howard said she's known for having a bad attitude. He said he should have smacked her right back. Robin said she probably would have taken John out. He said he should have popped her right in the chest and watched her balloons break. They went to break a short time later.
We heard from Judith about why she thought he should do a book. She said he had a huge audience and the book would be a great thing for him. She said he's a master of promotion and how to get everyone worked up into a frenzy. She said he can get people to show up.
Howard said Judith was phenomenal and knew that he was going to be serious about putting out a great book so the fans would have it and like it. He said he wanted to make it as good as he could. Judith said that Howard had this agent who was the toughest agent in America and he likes to say ''no.'' She said she had to chase him for a year to get a meeting with Howard. Judith said she had to do everything she could to get that meeting.
Don Buchwald said that he told her that she has no idea what it would be like if Howard wrote a book for her. Judith said she believed him but she didn't know quote how dramatic it was going to be. She said Don told her the truth and everything he told her was going to happen, happened. Howard said that was probably the hardest thing he's ever done.
We heard a press conference clip where Howard announced the book. He was talking about his radio show spreading across the country and how well he was doing. He told the press he was going to take what he was doing orally and put it down on paper.
They had more with Judith Regan who was talking about how diverse Howard's audience is and how the people she was working with didn't know that. They thought his audience was illiterate and wouldn't read. Judith said Howard was regarded as low brow and trashy back then. She said now he's normal and she fell in love with him while she was working with him.
Howard talked about how he had never done anything like that before so Judith had to guide him and she became his mentor. Howard said she'd read his stuff and she'd tell him he didn't make his point or he needed to add a punch line or something. Howard said the first book was overwhelming to him. He said Judith understood what he wanted and she really cared about it. He said she would sit there with him and critique what he was doing. Howard said she seemed to really care for him and not just because he was doing the book for her.
Judith said Howard was the best student she's had. She said he was a great story teller but he didn't know what it was going to be like writing a book. She said he learned to master it better than anyone else she's worked with.
Howard worked with Larry Ratso Sloman on the book. Ratso was working at Rolling Stone at the time. Ratso talked about some of the stuff they were going to do with the book and how he thought about having a sponsor for every chapter of the book. Howard thought that was a great idea and he wanted to make it happen but it never did.
Howard talked about working with Ratso and how he helped push him into stuff so he could make this book happen. He said Ratso told him he could give him a skeleton of a chapter but he had to put the meat on the bones himself. Ratso said it was a true collaboration and he wasn't going to write stuff Howard didn't actually write. He said they had years and years of material to go through. He said he and Gary would sit through archives and tapes and figure out what to write about. Ratso said Gary has this amazing ability to remember the history of the show so that was a major part of structuring that book. Gary said he put a lot of hours into that book.
They played a show clip where Howard talked about finding some girls to be chapter girls for the book. He said he had finished about 6 chapters of the book so far. He said that they were completely finished chapters. He said he has more to do but those 6 should be complete. He said the deadline had passed already but he has more work to do. He said he has to write another 6 chapters over the weekend. He said he thinks he had written 3 of them while they were talking. He pretended to be writing them up as they were talking. Fred played a typewriter sound effect in the background as Howard talked about what he was typing up. That led to them goofing on Gary and playing a bunch of variants of ''Baba Booey'' including some new ones like ''Dada Dummy'' and ''Rere Retard'' among others.
Howard talked about how they were looking for chapter card girls and they were going to get to them after taking a break. He said he was going to look at the girls and figure out which ones they could use.
We heard from Judith Regan again and she was saying that Howard wanted to make that book perfect and she rarely sees that anymore. She said that young people could learn about work ethic from Howard. She said he was a workaholic. Ratso said that they were like two workaholics and they had a great time working on the book. He said they would go into a vault like room to work on it and they'd work like crazy. He said Howard was on one of his crazy diets at the time and he would get a bacon and egg sandwich himself. He said he'd ask Howard if they could eat something and Howard would come back with like 5 pieces of lettuce and some olives. He said they'd have to send out for food for him.
That led into a show clip where Howard talked about working with Ratso and how he had to live with him over the weekends. He said they would work on the book all weekend. Howard said he loses patience over the weekend when they're working. Gary said they get fed out there and they're eating very well there. He said they eat better there than they do at home. Howard said he has the kids running around calling him Uncle Ratso there. He said there's something very wrong with Uncle Ratso. Howard said he's like ''Uncle Mooch.''
We heard current day Howard talking about how he lost a whole summer writing that book. He said they didn't even use some of the chapters in the book. He said Ratso was a great guy and he would work with him again if he wanted to.
Judith said that Howard felt he had to work with someone who was a fan and she thinks that Ratso had a hard time focusing. She said that he had to go through a lot of the show transcripts and he had to become a huge fan of the show. She said that she had to move into Howard's guest house to work on the book during the week. She said they were writing and rewriting the book that whole summer.
They played another show clip where Howard talked about working with Judith on the book. He said he was done with the chapters, pretty much. He said some of the drafts are done and some aren't. He said some of them were brilliant. Howard said everyone wants to move into his house too and they don't live that far from him. He said Judith could drive home but she wants to live there. Howard said he's used to that trip out to Long Island. Robin said she's not sure how he does it. Howard said it takes him just 20 minutes to get from door to door at 4 in the morning. He doesn't have to do rush hour so it's not so bad for him.
Howard talked about how everyone who moves in with him starts to eat like him and they never leave. Howard said the whole thing is nuts. He's in the middle of editing the book and they have two days to finish it. Howard said Judith wants to go on vacation but he wants her to stay so they can finish. He said she's going to delay the release of the book. Howard said Judith will complain about him not using punctuation but he doesn't know enough about it. He said she was actually surprised that he was able to write as well as he did. He said his first draft of the book was one, long sentence.
We heard from current Howard who was talking about how Judith helped him and Ratso write that book. Judith said that she learned a lot from Howard during that time. She said that he was focused on the book and there were no distractions other than an occasional erection. She said that Howard would call her attention to them and she wondered if they were a joke. She said she wasn't paying attention to his private parts and she would kind of ignore that stuff. She said that his penis was his only distraction. Ratso said he had never seen a relationship like what Howard and Judith had. He said that Judith once sent around a naked photo her herself trying to get more assignments at the National Enquirer when she was working there. He said she would tease Howard a lot and it worked for them. She was like a cock tease and Howard would dance for her like a marionette. He said there were never any sexual acts but there was a sexual tension there. Ratso said he would see that going on and didn't know what to do.
Judith said that she would poke Howard's erections with her eraser and it would make Howard want to work harder. She said the best way to motivate a guy is not to give it to him. She said once you close the deal they're done and out of there. She said that she and Howard flirted but it was never consummated. She said Howard wanted her to show him her breasts but she never did that either.
They played another show clip where Howard was talking about how they wanted a title for his book. He said he wanted to call it Mein Kampf. He said Judith called him and said no to that. Howard said that's what he wanted to call it. He said Judith had to think about it and she didn't want him to call it that. Howard said he thought it was a stroke of brilliance. He said that Mein Kampf means ''My struggle'' so that was perfect for the book. Howard said he wanted to throw the name by someone and called his agent. Howard said he spoke to Don Buchwald and Don is pretty conservative. When he told him the title of the book Don didn't know what to say. Howard said that's a good answer. Don said he had to think about it. Howard said he had to call someone else about it too and told Judith to keep a lid on it so no one else would steal the title.
Howard said they called a higher up woman over at Simon and Schuster. He said they told her the title and she said they couldn't use that name because it was used already. Howard said that was the joke. She said they can't put it into the computer that way because it would reject it. Howard said they would add ''Howard Stern's...'' to the title so it wouldn't be a problem. Howard said he didn't dare tell his parents about that. He said his father would have called him a moron.
Howard said his father is Jewish so he wouldn't have liked the title. He said his mother probably would have been fine with it. Howard said he was going to pose like Hitler for the cover of the book. He said it would have been great. He said the woman at Simon and Schuster said she didn't like the idea but she would go through with it if he wanted. Howard said his agent called back and said he thought about it and thought it would offend too many Jews so it was best not to do it. Howard said he dropped the idea after that. He said no one ever gets the joke so it's not worth it. Howard talked about a new title for the book anyway.
We heard Howard talking about how he had other titles for the book. He suggested ''War and Piss'' to Robin on the show one day. Howard said he had another one which was ''I Moron, King of all Idiots.'' He said he can imagine what the cover of the book would look like.
Judith talked about how Howard wanted a scratch and sniff cover and call the book ''Howard Stern's Vagina'' but the people at the book company didn't like that. They were disgusted by that.
We heard another show clip where Howard talked about someone suggesting that he name the book ''Penis'' so they would have to review it as ''Howard Stern's Penis.'' He said they would have to refer to it in a lot of ways that they'd be talking about his Penis. He said he knows that they won't do that either. He said he has to reject that one but it is a great name. Howard said Howard Stern's Vagina is out as well. Robin suggested ''Private Parts.'' Howard said that wasn't bad. He said that might work. He said that he can imagine people telling other people to go pick up Howard Stern's Private Parts. He told Jackie to write that one down for him.
We heard current day Robin talking about how she knew she named that book. She said she thought that it would get the same bang out of the name as ''Penis'' would. Judith said she doesn't think that Robin came up with the title herself. She said that she was pretty sure that they came up with that idea in a lot of ways. She said that Howard wanted to name it something sexual. Judith said that Howard was obsessed with his cock and that was his whole life.
We heard another show clip where Howard talked about working with Judith and how she can barely control herself over his book cover. Howard had a woman on the phone and he was telling her what the cover was going to be like. Howard said he was going to call the book ''Private Parts'' and he wasn't going to name it something that would keep it hidden from everyone. the caller said it would be great to be able to go into a book store and ask for Howard Stern's penis. Howard said he'd rather not test out that idea putting out his first book.
We heard from Judith Regan talking about being at Simon and Schuster talking to the lawyers there. He said that Howard likes to shock women with his comments and they were in this legal department and asked her to put the ice from her glass down his pants. She said that she went right ahead and did that and it shocked Howard. She said Howard is like a little kid so when you do something he tells you to, he gets terrified. She said he's a lot of fun and she'd like to do that again. They went to break after that.
Howard said he wanted to do something more than Rush Limbaugh did with his book. He said the people at Simon and Schuster think the book is great even though they hate him. He said that he just wants this to be over with though. Howard said he wants to experience life instead of write about it. Howard said he wants to lay out by the pool and enjoy that. He said he's buys locked in the basement thinking and writing. Howard said he sits there looking out a window and he should have been doing this during the winter. Howard said his agent is trying to find more work for him but he's burnt out from this.
We heard from Mike Gange who said he helped with the book and it was like working 24 hours a day for a couple of months. He said they were all exhausted after that. Ratso talked about how it was the hardest thing Howard had ever done and it really was tough. He said he was doing the radio show full time and he had family and he was writing a book so it was torturous. He said they have this bond from working on the book.
We heard another show clip where Howard talked about how he was ready to kill himself from working on that book. He said he was literally going to kill himself if they didn't finish it this week. Howard said he left the show yesterday and shot some pictures for the book. He described some of the pictures they were taking and how they were doing make up and picking stuff off his face. Howard said he just farted and blasted another one into the mic. He said that made him hungry so he asked Grillo to make him his potato.
We heard from Ralph Cirella about the photo shoot they did for the book. Ralph said they had talked about doing a cover with Howard naked but no one looks good naked. He said they took a lot with Howard in various states with a robe on. He said the cover that they did turned out to be iconic. Judith Regan said that Howard wanted her to come over and touch him and he put her hand on him strategically and she now knows that he's lying when he says he has a small penis.
They played another show clip where Howard was telling Robin about the photo shoot and how he did a lot of naked shots. Howard said he didn't want to be totally nude even though the book is called Private Parts. He said he starts to think he's good looking because people tell him he is. He said he gets suckered in every time. Howard said they had Amy and Tempest there naked but they won't be seen completely naked in the book. He said that Ratso worked his way down there to see that. Howard said you do see a lot of their bodies but not the whole thing. Howard said it came down to him being completely nude and he said he would have done it if he had time to work out. Howard said they were telling him to just do it. Howard said he got naked for Ralph and asked his opinion. Ralph told him he was against it but did tell him he looks good. Howard said he didn't show Ralph his penis because he's not sure what his story is. Howard said Ralph told him he looked good. Howard asked if Robin wanted to see how he looked. She said she did so Howard took off his clothes for her.
Howard said he had shaved all of his body hair off for the picture. He showed Robin what he did for the pictures and Robin laughed. Jackie was trying not to look at him. Howard told him to look as he posed. Gary came in and checked him out. Howard said he didn't look so bad so he got naked for the pictures. He said he had a black cape around his waist to cover up any cellulite. Gary said Howard didn't have a big gut or anything so he looked good.
We heard from Judith Regan who was saying that Howard is a good looking man and he has great hands and feet.
