Howard said he likes what Bill did with that song. He said he comes off like a real monster. He said he was out promoting his new book ''Boldly Go'' and they asked him to record the song and he said yes. He said it's the real Bill Shatner. He said he did not want to sing the lyric ''mother fucker'' so he laughed maniacally instead. He said that's why you hear him doing that. Robin said all of us should take that and run with it. She said we can all do the laugh instead.
Robin said she's shocked that he didn't say the line when an actor should just do his lines. Howard said this is the real Shatner and not the actor. He said he's 91 years old and turns 92 in March. He said he's still out there doing promotion and things.
Robin said she was watching the new Sylvester Stallone show. She said they give you one at a time on Paramount+. Howard said they're coming on strong. He said HBO is coming on strong too. He said that he was thinking about this great interview he did with Bruce Springsteen. He said he was wishing it could go anywhere. He said he was hoping for larger distribution. He said he has worked it out and they're going to air this on HBO. He said the interview will debut on HBO on Sunday November 27th. He said that's right after the premiere of White Lotus on HBO. He said that will be on Thanksgiving. He said that he knows people in their universe can see it on the app but he wanted to get it out to even more people. He said now everyone has the announcement. Robin said that's so great. She said it's Howard's gift to America.
Howard said a few years back he gave out Sirius radios. He said now he's giving out interviews. He said he called up Bruce and told him his dream he had and he told him about this HBO thing. He asked him how he felt about it and Bruce told him to just get it done. He said the thing that struck him is that he's his own man. He said he doesn't go through his agent. He said he asked him how he felt and Bruce was all for it. He said he gave him his blessing. He said he had a good time doing it and he told him to just go do it.
Howard said someone calls him up and asks him to do something and they have to go through his agent. He said Bruce is his own man. Howard said he has to call his own agent to do something.
Howard said he wanted to make this announcement and last night he was asked not to make the announcement this week. He said he was told to do it next week. He said he got upset. He said it won't give him time to get the word out. He said he was upset about that. He said he was asked to call Bruce and straighten it out. He said he can't call the guy because she doesn't know the guy that well. He said they told him to just call because Bruce might be upset about it too. He said that he didn't want to be a nudge. He called his agent and his agent told him to call Bruce. He said he didn't think that was right. He said he didn't want to abuse his relationship. He said Don told him that Bruce probably wants it out there too. Howard said as soon as he said that it was okay. He said he got it all resolved. He said someone spoke to John Landau and everything was good. He said it was so simple. He said he just wanted more people to see this interview.
Howard said he just said to Bruce on the phone that he thinks this was the greatest interview and he wanted more people to see it. He said Bruce did too. He said he was loose as a goose in this interview. He said for those who have seen it know that. He said now people with HBO can see it. He said that's good. He said it's good for SiriusXM too.
Howard said tomorrow they have Quentin Tarantino and on Wednesday the have Neil Young coming in so he's excited about that too.
Howard said he was getting upset when these people were saying the election was fixed and rigged to get on Trump's side. He said a lot of people sold their souls. He said things were crazy. He said Trump can't admit he lost. He said when he won it wasn't rigged but it was when he lost. He said then he was telling all of these people that they had to say the election was stolen to get his endorsement. He said that scared a lot of people off. He said it scared a lot of people in this country and they proved that we have a lot of common sense. He said his midterm election was so successful because people saw America slipping away. He said he's proud of people for voting the way they did. He said things were getting too Nazi like. He said he's here to say that he's proud of people for stepping up. He said people did the right thing. He said there are people who were saying they were going to fix the elections and we voted against them. He said he's very proud today.
Howard said if you like this speech put it up on HBO. He said he's just proud of people today.
Robin said Howard should check out the pictures from Trump's daughter's wedding. She said none of those people voting for him are going there.
Howard said Jon Leiberman did a show on Robin. He said he did a whole show. He said he spoke to a guy named Dr. Will Cole about the fast. He said that a 10 day fast is extreme and it shouldn't done without supervision. Howard played some audio from the show Jon did with this guy.
Howard said he's surprised she did this without supervision. Robin said she had supervision. She said she had many people helping her out with this but the final decision was her's.
Howard said this doctor also talked about Robin breaking out into dance. The doctor said that he hasn't heard about dancing with people who fast but having more energy is a thing that happens.
Howard said a lot of fans wrote in about the fast. He read some of the comments they got about that. People were saying they tried to fast and they didn't have as much luck as Robin did.
Howard said he thinks Robin looks great. He said she may have lost a cup size of breast meat. He said she looks sexy. Robin said she was doing this for health reasons. She said that's what she's looking for. She said she's looking for her highest potential in her health. She said she doesn't want to have a melting future. She wants to be able to walk around.
Howard read more feedback about the fasting. He had a song parody that someone sent in about Robin being a fasting nut. Howard said this listener was brutal. He told her to eat something, bitch... and signed it Mahatma Gandhi.
Howard said he has another song called Robin is Crazy by Britney Spears. He played that song parody by a fake Britney.
Howard said he heard that she has a picture from his book Howard Stern Comes Again in her office now. Gary said she thinks that Jennifer wanted to surprise Howard in her next meeting. He said he didn't tell him about it. Howard said it was Jason who told him the news. He said he did the right thing though. He said Gary said it was supposed to be a surprise. Jason said he just saw it walking by her office. He said the poster is big. He said it looks nice in the frame it's in. Gary said it is pretty big but not as big as Robin's picture of herself in her house. He said her picture was very large. Robin said it was a portrait. Gary said it was something you'd see at the royal palace or something.
Fred asked if it was Robin in her blue jumpsuit. Gary said it was but Robin said it was in a black outfit. Fred said it was like having two Robin's in the room at the same time. He said that's how big it was. Robin said she only has one in her house. She said she knows other people who have multiple pictures of themselves in their homes. Howard said he knows he has that going on but that's his wife who keeps putting them up.
Gary said if he took all the pictures of himself in his own home they wouldn't be as big as Robin's single picture. Robin said she doesn't believe that.
Howard said Jennifer has this big picture now. He said he's not sure where it is. Gary said it's behind her desk. She said that Andy's picture is on the there side of the office. He said she may change sides for when she does her next meeting. Howard said he likes that it's there.
Howard took a call from fake Jennifer Witz who was talking about how big this picture is. She was giving him a hard time about the whole thing. She said the bigger the picture the tinier the penis. She was laughing at him over all of that and at his tiny penis.
Howard let Jennifer go and took a call from Bobo. Bobo said Bruce must have been so overwhelmed with the praise he got over this interview. He said it's top of the food chain for him. He said now HBO. He said it's awesome. Howard said Bobo is excited for the big premiere. Robin said she's not sure why he had to speculate over this.

He said when he came to them the had to shave him down. He said the fur was all knotted. He said the fur came off in one piece. He said the cat was not treated well.
Howard said they took the cat in thinking he had about a month to live. He said the got a shoe box to stick him in and they had it in the garage because they knew he was going to die. He said it was crazy that they started to feed him and gave him love and they thought it was going to be his final few days. He said the cat was dying. He said he hung out with them and then when the brought in kittens he'd corral them. He said he was like a mother to them. He said he'd hold and sleep with them. He said he'd wrap them up and then he'd heard them into the foster room if they ran out.
Howard said months go by and they wonder what's going on. He said the doctor tells them that his heart is okay now. He said he wasn't going to die. Howard said he wondered how that was possible. He said the cat was fine. He said he stayed with them for 10 years. He said they wrote two books about him in that time.
Howard said a couple of weeks ago Yoda got sick and stopped eating. He said he had cancer and a big tumor in front of his heart. He said the wanted to operate on him but they didn't want to put him through that. He said they did what they could for him to make him comfortable in his final couple of weeks. He said they had to know when to call the doctor to take care of him. He said he was hoping Beth would know when to call. He said his wife looked at him Tuesday night last week and said it was time. He said Yoda had a chair he loved and they kept him there. He said they called Dr. Browning and had him come out. He said this guy is great. He said he said he would come out and help them out.
Howard said he sat with Yoda for as long as he could before the doctor came over. He said he showed up a little late and he was thanking god for that. He said he had a little more time with Yoda. He said he and Beth were sitting there on the couch and the cat came over and sat between them. He said they were hugging and kissing him. He said they were thinking about how bad it was going to be. He said then Yoda got in his chair and he wasn't comfortable. He said his face was looking at him. He said they knew they were doing the right thing. He said they didn't want him to suffer.
Howard said the doctor told them they were doing the right thing when he saw Yoda. He said he told them what he was going to do. He said he'll be nice and relaxed in about 10 minutes. He said then they inject something to stop his heart. He said he knew Yoda was out of it. He said he didn't even flinch when they gave him the shot. He said the other two cats ran under the couch when they saw what was going on.
Howard said Beth was petting Yoda. He said he went over to pet him too. He said they shaved his leg and gave him the shot. He said Yoda was gone in 3 seconds. He said it was awful. He said then the doctor said that he would leave for a few minutes so they can be alone with him. He said Beth asked him to get the grooming brush and groomed him one last time. He said she wanted him to look nice. He said that his wife is so good to the cats. He said she cleaned up his nose and groomed him. She picked him up and hugged him.
Howard said the doctor came back in and they wrapped him in a blanket. He said the doctor carried him to the car and they're getting him cremated. He said they sent him a place that's really good about giving you the right ashes back and stuff like that.
Howard said they have a big vase up in their bedroom with the ashes of their cats and Bianca their dog. He said they have almost no room left in there. He said he would have put his father in there too if he could have.
Howard said he and Beth were really bummed so they went for a walk and talked about Yoda. He said life is so painful. He said it's so hard. He said he started getting philosophical. He said he wonders where the fuck he's going. He said here's what he thinks. He said he thinks that this world is so large and we're so small in the whole thing. He said his father was bigger than life to him but we're really meaningless. Robin said they have studied this before. She said we perform like any other species. She said people get married and go to work at the same time and traffic is heavy at those times. She said if someone was studying us we'd look like any insect. Howard said he doesn't think we're going anywhere. He said his daughter is very religious and thinks we're going somewhere. Robin said you are going somewhere for sure.
Howard said he thinks it's so important to be able to hug and hold your pet after putting them to sleep. He said it really sucked.
Howard answered a knock at the door and it was fake William Shatner who wanted to sing a song in memory of their beloved cat. He sang ''Tears in Heaven'' by Eric Clapton. He was going so slow that Howard almost interrupted him. Howard let him go and closed the door on him.

He said he was complaining about the audio quality on that channel. He said that he ended up calling the network and complaining about it. He said he actually got through.
The caller said he can't hear anything on this FX network. He said he can't hear the dialog. Howard said he was watching something the other night and he put up the volume and he couldn't her it. He said he turned it up and then the sound is way too loud when they have special effects and stuff. He said his wife got so upset thinking he's losing his hearing. He said he has lost some of his hearing but he's not playing it that loud. Robin said she has to adjust the sound a lot too. She said they start talking and you have to turn it up. She said she's her own mixer. Howard said he has to do that too. The caller said he's from Bobby from Brooklyn and he has to tell Mariann to shut up when Howard is talking.
Howard took a call from Mariann from Brooklyn who was talking about the Yoda thing and she knows that she has to be quiet for Howard. She kept speeding up and getting louder the more she spoke. Howard hung up on her.
Howard said he has a guy on the phone who agrees with this guy on the FX thing. He said the guy went deaf listening to it. Howard took the call and the guys were playing clip of Asian Pete as the caller.

He said he used to go there all the time. He said he sees a lot of celebrities have named their kids Brooklyn. He said it's kind of a catchy name. He said he was against those trendy names when he was naming his kids. He said he wanted regular names. He said names that are true Americana.
Howard said he was thinking maybe he should have named them something different. He said Frank Zappa told him he should name one of his kids Moldred. Howard said David Bowie did the Zoe Bowie thing and he changed his name to Joe when he grew up. He said you want a regular name. He said imagine if his kid's name was Moldred. He said that would have been crazy. Robin said that people would have read things into it. She said they would have thought it was satanic. Howard said he's not a weirdo like that. He said he's pretty traditional. He said he's no nonsense like his dad.
Howard said he should know more about this stuff. He said he was reading about this guy who lost 15 billion of his 16 billion worth in a day. He said that he was the head of a crypto company. He said that this imaginary money thing is something maybe you shouldn't invest in. He said Memet tells him that Bitcoin is still worth investing in. He said he claims the $5 he gave them is worth 50 now. He said Gary tried to redeem the Bitcoin he got from Memet and he wasn't able to get any money for it.
Memet said that it's not clear where he went to get it. Gary said getting the Bitcoin isn't easy to get. He said he has this number on it and they tried to figure it out with this guy who knows about it and he had no time to figure it out. Robin said that number is a number that people lose and they can never get their Bitcoin.
Howard said he was talking to Memet and he told him he doesn't even have any Bitcoin. Memet said he has his cash going other places right now. He said Howard is up by 50 percent from what it was 5 years ago. Howard asked why Gary would like it if he can't redeem it. Gary said he doesn't like it because he doesn't understand it. He said if he ever is able to redeem it he'll take Memet out to dinner. Gary said that everyone who lost money in crypto is out of that money and its not backed up by the government. Robin said it's like a ponzi scheme. Memet said that it's up from what it was when it started. He said in 15 years it may be worth a lot more.

Howard said Beet was so close.
Howard said JD was investing in Crypto. He said he stopped that and now he's just investing in baseball cards. JD said he was investing a little bit at a time and it was going up and up and then it just went down. He said he was up to like $1,300 but then it went down to about 600 so he got out of it. He said he doesn't know how much he put into it before he got out. He said he would have to go back and look at it.
Howard said he was talking about this with JD and he said he likes to buy high and sell low. Howard asked if he's more conservative now with his money. JD said yes.

He took the call and the guy was talking about how much money that's gone and how these guys are all in it together and it's like a Bernie Madoff kind of thing. He said it's a crazy story. Howard said he's not going to get into it because he's kind of bored with the whole thing. He said he hates it because he doesn't understand it.
Howard said he has a guy who made a lot of money from Bitcoin. He took the call and the guy, Brenden, said the reason people like it is because of the hype. He said there's no government behind it. Howard asked why people hate the government so much. He said he likes that the government backs up the dollar. He said we're trying to avoid another depression. Robin said the crypto is worldwide so that's why you don't want the government backing it up. She said that people went to that when the war broke out in Ukraine and things like that.
Brenden said he bought into Bitcoin and he made a lot of money and got out quickly. He said that the whole thing is crashing down now. Howard said he admires him for not being greedy. He said it used to drive him crazy with the Deal or No Deal contestants. He said they'd get up to 50 grand and they'd keep going and lose the whole thing. He said they shouldn't be so greedy.
Howard read about some people who have invested a lot of money in crypto. He had a NFL player and the mayor of New York City on that list.
Howard said he was asked to be in a Super Bowl commercial and he was going to be in it with someone like Tom Brady and they were going to have a winner and a loser in the ad and he was going to be the loser. He said he was going to play the douche. He said there was no way he was going to do that. He said he was going to be the piece of shit on Tom Brady's shoe. He said he was like fuck you and your money. He said he wasn't going to be trashed.
Howard said he was a crushed human being. He said he was so excited to get that offer. He said a bunch of years ago he was asked to do an ad for Coke or Pepsi and he was excited about that too. He said it was a pretty funny ad too. He said when the company caught wind of what the ad agency was doing they put an end to that right away.
Howard took a call from Ralph who asked what kind of money the ad with Tom Brady was going to pay. Howard said he never found out. He said he just knew he was going to play the worst character. He said fuck that and told them to find someone else. Howard said he was like the witch in the ad.
Ralph started to get into the crypto thing and he hung up saying he doesn't want him saying something wrong about someone. He said he just doesn't know about crypto. He said that's what he was trying to say.

He said he's a less fucked up Kanye West. He said he has more charisma than guys with heads twice his size. He said he can sing.
Howard said they had a song about Valentine's day that Beetlejuice performed earlier this year. He played some of that too. It was Beetlejuice singing along with a song and just making noises as he sang along with what he was listening to. Howard said he's like a pint sized Luther Vandros. He said he has some audio of it. He played the clip of these people throwing the tomatoes at art. Then they start going on and on about why they're doing this.
Howard said imagine going out with one of these women. He said he feels terrible about what's going on but doing this is not cool. Robin said this is an ineffective protest. She said it's not going to do anything. Howard said a chick like that has to have a hairy bush. He said he'd bet she has never shaved her bush. He said she could dip it in the soup and paint with it. Howard played the clip again.
Howard said he read that Greta Thunberg isn't going to the climate change conference this year. He said she's 19 now. He said she says that nothing ever happens when she does go. He said there is no change and they just promise things and they don't do what they promise. He said he'd like to know what she thinks about throwing soup on a piece of art and ruining it.
Howard answered a knock at the door and it was fake Greta who was very upset about everything. He asked her what she thinks about this art thing. Greta said she agrees with it completely.
Howard asked Greta what she'll be doing to help the cause if she's not going to this conference. Fake Greta said that she's going to be protesting by defecating on a 3,000 year old mummy. She had diarrhea sounds playing as she did that.
Howard let Greta go and asked what she could have eaten to shit so much. Robin said someone had better get a hold of her. She said it sounds like she has a problem.
Howard took a call from a guy who said these protests are crazy. He said Howard is part of this brotherhood now. He said it's crazy what they're doing. Howard said he works hard on his paintings and it takes months to do them. He said it would destroy him if someone did that to one of his paintings. He said he works hard on them. Robin said for someone like van Gogh it's something that's their life.
The caller said that Howard's painting has gotten him to the point where he has evolved that his interviews have gotten better. He said fuck the people who talk shit about him. He said he grew up on him so thank you. Howard said yeah, fuck these people who shit on him. He asked who they are.

Howard said when Superman's father knew his planet was going to explode he kept telling everyone that it was going to happen but no one listened to him. He said he hears this guy's point here. Robin said there are a lot of distractions out there like TikTok and Twitter. She said that's where the message should be going out. She said the people on there didn't hear about this. There was a life support beep coming over the song as they played it. Howard asked Fred if he was doing that. Fred said he's sharing a computer with a sound effect system and it was coming out of that. He said there are times that things happen. He said there's something crazy about that system. He said it happens occasionally.
Howard said he hears this caller's point but he doesn't agree with it. Howard took a call from a guy who said that guy had a point about protests being necessary but this art is our cultural heritage and this isn't the way to do it. He said it's not a money thing. He said it's our history. He said it's not the way to go.
Howard said everyone was on the Dixie Chick's case when they were protesting the war that George W. Bush started. He said now everyone thinks they were right.

Howard said at the funeral they smashed his body with a sledgehammer. He said that he was 76 years old and died of organ failure last week. Howard said that's not a good explanation. He said he wants to know more about what got him. He said that your organs just don't fail. He said something else had to be going on.
Howard said this guy had to be stressed out. He said they used to talk about it back in the day when Gallagher and his brother were both doing the same act. He said his brother Ron was touring as ''Gallagher Too''. He said people would go and they would see his brother and he did the same act. He said he would smash up the fruit. Howard read about what the guy said about writing the song and how it came about. Howard said that line is poetry to him. He said it brings him down. He said what a song. Howard said it might be a perfect song.
Howard said in Quentin's new book he talks about writing movies and how he does it. He said he will be sitting by the pool or in the shower and he comes up with an idea. He said he needs something to tune out. He said he comes up with an opening scene. He said he should let him talk about this. He said he will go listen to music to figure out what to use in the movie. He said when he writes a movie he has to go with that song ''Heavy.'' He said he has done the hard part with that. He said he has to remember to ask him to use that song in his next movie. He said that song is about as good as it gets.
Howard said that song isn't wiping out Thunder Road out of his head. He said he can't get that one out of his head. Robin said she was singing The River ever since he came. Howard said he knows. He said he can't wait for this thing to air on HBO. He said it's just so good. He played Thunder Road again.
Howard said he's picturing people catching the interview since not everyone subscribes to SiriusXM.
Howard asked if Robin is talking about The Rising and not The River. Robin said that's it.
Howard took a call from a guy who said he wants to know why some songs get stuck in your head. He said he wants him to ask Charlie Puth about that. Howard said he did a break down about that when he was there. He said some songs resonate with you and he did a whole break down of that. He said check out that interview too. He said it's up on the app.
Howard took a call from a guy who said more people are going to see this interview on HBO. He said people will see how great he is at doing interviews. He said he could have done 15 hours and he would have listened to it. Howard said it's good promotion for his album too. He said not that he needs it but they want people to know what they're doing over there. He said he sees it as a home run. He said he loves that this moment occurred. The caller said they were all lucky to have been in that moment. He said in 50 years people won't be able to do that.
Robin said there are things that you'd hear about and not get to see. She said this will get it out to people who might not see it. Howard said that's how he saw it.
Howard had a clip of Charlie Puth talking about Bruce Springsteen's songs and why they get you. Howard said he doesn't understand all of that but there it is.
Howard took a call from a guy who said he and his wife are having a baby boy this April and he wonders if he should circumcise or not. Howard said he has been over this a million times in his head. He said this is a tough one. He said he had three daughters and he doesn't know what he'd do. He said he knows guys who have not been circumcised and they have no issues but then there are some who have a lot of problems. He said he really feels that these religions came about because they wanted to calm guys down. He said that one of the stories is that there's a covenant with God where you're supposed to slice off the skin. He said it sounds so backwards. He said that he thinks that the skin is kind of perfect and there's no reason to cut it off. He said that it adds to the sexual experience and he's not sure why we do that. He said it's a tradition and it's become part of our culture. He said men and women think it's cleaner. Robin said it's only here in the United States though. Howard said he knows. He said he thinks it's ridiculous to cut off the skin of a baby. He said he thinks it's wrong but then he thinks about the guys who have the issues with their foreskins. He said we have to have it for a reason.
Robin said there are many people dealing with it around the world and they're fine. She said we'd hear about the problems if there were any. Howard said he thinks that he wouldn't do it but then he hasn't had a son so he really doesn't know. He said that his mother had him circumcised because she was brain washed. He said his father thought it should be done too. He said that he wishes he had it so he had another inch when he's not erect. He said he thinks the greatest sadness is that he's not a show-er when he gets hard. He said that he wants something to show when he's flaccid. He said that he'd like to have thickness and length. He said he's done alright but it is a great sadness. He said he's hung like his mother. He said she had big tits so he thought he'd have a big dick.
Howard said even his mother thought he had a small penis when he was born. He said what a good thing to hear that was. He said she didn't think much of it. He said he does grow a tremendous amount when he does get hard. He said Beth said that he banged her so hard once that he banged her into her period. Robin said she's never heard of such a thing. Howard said it's a confusing thing. He said if he had a big penis he'd pull his pants down and show it to Robin right now. He said he'd be like Medicated Pete going around on the nude beach asking people what they think.
Howard took a call from a guy who had a botched circumcision. The caller said that he went for a physical and he thought he was circumcised. He said the doctor asked how he got away with being Jewish and not being circumcised. He said the Moyle apparently cut him in a different way. He said he thinks that it all feels okay to him. He said he didn't know they were trying different styles. Howard said they're not being a help to the original caller, Adam. He said he really doesn't know what he would do. Adam said he's not sure what to do. Howard said he thinks he might do it or not. He said he's 50/50 on it.
Howard asked Robin what she would do. Robin said don't circumcise. She said it's like a cat being declawed. She said she feels the same thing about this. Howard wished Adam luck with whatever happens.
Howard took a call from a guy who said he loved Bruce's ''The Rising'' when he did it in the studio. Howard played some of the song. Howard said imagine him sitting a couple of inches away from him while he played. He said he cried during Thunder Road. He said he was like a baby. Robin said just listen to this. Howard said he can't wait for this to be on HBO.
Howard did a live commercial read and went to break.

Howard came back and talked up the James Brown song like he was at WNBC. Howard introduced Quentin Tarantino who he hadn't seen since 2015. He said they've both been busy. He said that life gets in the way. Quentin agreed. He said there is no reason for him to have been gone this long. He said it just happened.
Howard said they were debating which movie is his best. He asked if he thinks about his career like that. Quentin said for years people used to ask him stuff like that but he said they were like his children. He said it depends on when you ask him too. He said that he thinks Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is his best. Howard said he didn't pull that one up as his best.
Howard said he doesn't think a lot of directors write their own material like Quentin does. He said he's amazed with a guy like Paul McCartney writing and performing his own stuff. He said most directors get their stuff from someone else. Quentin said there are some who do. He said there are others who write stuff for themselves so they have their own stuff to do. He said he's a writer/director. Howard said he did the right move. He said he wrote his own movie and directed it. He said if he could write a great thing then he could be a director. Quentin said he knew at a certain point that if he wrote something so good that a movie company had to do it then they had to take him with it. He said his partner at the time even set it up so he had to direct Reservoir Dogs. He said he told the movie company that they had to go with that.
Howard said that he didn't give up anything with the movie. Quentin said that he could have made Reservoir Dogs with $30,000 and a camera. He said it still would have been good. He said he had a movie as far as he was concerned. He said if Howard wants to give him more money to make it that's fine. He said he doesn't need that to make his dream come true though. He said that he can go in and tell the movie company that they don't need them and just get up and leave.
Howard asked Quentin if he was the kind of kid who was well read. He asked if he read a ton of books. Quentin said he was a terrible student. He said he checked out early. Howard said he doesn't' get that. Quentin said he's not sure why he hated school back then. He said he could go there now and enjoy it. He said he thinks it was because he had to go. He said if he wasn't good at something he'd give up on it and check out. He said the weird part was that while he was a terrible student and got bad grades he was reading at an adult level. He said he was just a little boy and reading at an adult level. He said he'd pick up his mom's paperbacks and read them. He said he did read a lot. He said he was a better reader than a lot of kids in 3rd and 4th grade.
Quentin said the other subject he was good at was history. He said not the dates of things happening but the storytelling in history. He said he had seen movies. He said he would be in history class hearing stories and he'd be wondering if he could make a movie about that subject. He said he liked the movie The Last Valley about the black plague. He said he was interested in finding out more about that. He said there were a lot of movies like that.
Quentin said he knew this kid who did a book report on the Donner Party and he was thinking what a groovy movie that would have made. He said his teacher went on for about 2 week about Cortez and Montezuma. He said he was thinking about what a great movie that would make too. Howard said that's a great way to look at history.
Howard said the whole story about him and his mom that came out is something. He said that he had a very odd childhood. He said his mom was a single woman and he had a step father and then didn't have one. He said she was dating a lot of famous guys too. He said she dated Wilt Chamberlain. He said she must have been a good looking woman. Quentin said she was. He said she was really young too. Howard said it has to be weird for a little kid. Quentin said he was always really proud of his mom being prettier than the other moms. He said the other moms looked like an old lady selling flowers on TV. He said his mom came in looking really good.
Howard asked if he was exposed to the men his mom was dating. Quentin said he never met Wilt or anything but he knew she was doing it. He said it was kind of cool that she was dating them.
Howard asked if it inspired him to think it wasn't that unobtainable. Quentin said he thinks that's one removed from the Grand Canyon kind of thing. He said he knows what Howard means but he's not sure that applies to him. He said that one of the reasons that kids do well in acting careers if they have famous parents it's because they were exposed to it. He said that they're willing themselves there. He said it could happen. He said this is a legitimate business and it's the family business. He said no one coming off the bus thinks the hope it can work out. He said they're swinging for the bleachers.
Howard said he told his father he wanted to be on radio and he told him he was an idiot. He said he didn't think it would ever happen.
Quentin said Howard is so good on radio that he talked him into buying a pair of Mugsy Jeans. He said he sold him with his ad read.
Howard said he can relate to Quentin in a way. He said his mother told him to stop writing screen plays all day. He said she wasn't supportive. He said he got that from his father. He said his father told him he wasn't going to succeed and he was going to be a bum. He said he thinks his mother came from the same thing. He said his mom was downright mean to him. Quentin said it was a long time ago and he meant it in levity. He said he hasn't bought her a house or anything but the whole internet did roll over on her. Howard said he wouldn't get her a house either. He said he was too generous with his father at times he thinks.
Quentin said he would write scripts in school. Howard asked if he has those. Quentin said not that far back. He said he does have some stuff from when he was 18 or 19. Howard asked if it's good. Quentin said he doesn't know what he's doing but the dialog is there. He said he has no story to tell but the dialog is there. He said it's like a stand up comedian in the beginning of their career.
Howard said he just did this interview with Bruce Springsteen and he said he doesn't have anything to say right now so that's why he doesn't have a new album. Howard said he has spoken to a lot of musicians about writing songs and they write the same way Quentin writes movies. Howard said he talks about his opening scene and how he comes up with that and then takes it from there. Howard asked what the next step is from there. Quentin told Howard that Django is a good one to talk about. He said that he was inspired to write that when he was in Japan doing promotion for Inglourious Basterds. He said he went to a record store and found these spaghetti westerns in the store. He said he got some of that music and took it back to his hotel. He said he had this idea for Django for a while. He said he didn't have his notebook with him at the time so he just took some stationary from the hotel room. Howard asked if that drove him nuts not having his notebook. Quentin said not really but he usually has it with him. He said he has to be able to rip the pages out of he spiral notebook. He said he has red and black felt pens he likes to write with. He said he'll write with black, get bored and then write with red. He said that's just what he does.
Quentin said he sat down to write and he came up with the opening of Django. He said he wrote the scene and that's pretty much what's in the movie. He said he figured that's just what he's doing. Howard asked if he had seen Jamie Foxx in that role. Quentin said no but he did see Christoph Waltz.
Howard asked how you know if the movie is a home run or not. Quentin said how he knows it's good is if he gets so excited about it he can't wait for people to read about it. He said he can call up a friend on the phone and read them the scene. Howard asked who he calls with that. He asked why he's not on that list. Quentin said he'll call Eli Roth or some other people he knows in the business. He said there are 4 or 5 people he'll call. Howard asked if they're honest with him. Quentin said he will listen for laughs and things like that. He said he doesn't really want a lot of comments back from them. He said he just wants to hear it through their ears. He said that's what he's going for. He said he's trying to get the timing right. He said when he reads it to them he's hearing it through their ears. Howard said that makes sense to him. He said he has an audience and he can tell if it sounds good. Quentin said he's performing it and he's getting the timing right.
Howard asked if Quentin has any interest in writing with anyone else. Quentin said he's always writing something because it's a fun thing for him to do. Howard asked if he has a ritual for writing. He said it can be lonely when you write. Quentin said he has gotten over that ritual kind of thing. He said he never really had it that much. He said he'll write in bars and restaurants. He said he'll get his junk and just go out and write and eat and drink. He said just the fact that he brought all the junk with him means he'll write something.
Howard asked if he writes the whole movie. Quentin said he has an idea of where it's going. He said he has a beginning and an end and he goes from there.
Howard said he likes to paint and Quentin is like a painter with his writing. He said he likes to listen to the music before even writing the movie. Quentin said it helps him get into the movie. He said he can gain interest in it more and more by doing that. He said he has a record room in his house and he has it set up like a record store. He said he as been collecting them since he was a kid. He said that he dives into what the songs might be. He said he tries to find something to inspire him. He said if he finds the right song for the opening credit sequence he's set. He said he wants to make that movie so he can see it.
Howard asked if he watches his movies back. Quentin said of course. He said he makes them for himself and everyone else comes along for the ride. Howard said he loves that he says that. He said he likes his own movies. Quentin said unlike the critics he likes his own movies. Howard asked if he has a song he associates with Kill Bill. Quentin said the Bang Bang He Shot Me Down is the song that he came up with for the movie. He said he had to make it with that song before anyone else did it. Howard said no one else is thinking the way you are. He said he knows that feeling because he did the same in radio.
Quentin said he was working on Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and he had a producer who had worked on some of his other movies. He said that he had this idea for this movie years before. He said he didn't want to put the name out there and risk having someone else find out. He said he referred to it as Magnum Opus for a few years.
Howard asked if Quentin thinks that he wasn't able to have a relationship because of the time he had to put into movies. Quentin said a woman who doesn't understand that doesn't understand you. He said he's married now and his wife created a wonderful office for him and he goes in and writes in this room. He said he has become very prolific there in Tel Aviv. He said he's done more there than he did in 5 years in Los Angeles.
Howard asked if his wife can ask him to spend more time with the kids and her. He said he knows how difficult that is. He said you do need alone time. Quentin said he sets his own hours. He said playing with his son is one of the greatest things in his life. He said if he talks about it too much he'll start crying. He said his wife will ask him to come up from work and play with the kids or give him a bath. He said he's okay with that. He said there's nothing he can't go back to. He said he learned a trick about writing and he thinks he leaned it from Ernest Hemingway. He said it's to not finish your thought. He said you stop your thought in the middle of it and you start where you left off and it gets you back into writing mode. Howard said he can't do that. He said he has to write it down when he's thinking about it. He said he's afraid of forgetting it.
Howard asked Quentin about his father not being there in his life. He said when you have a father who abandoned you that's heavy. He said that his mother was abandoned too. Quentin said to be honest she left his father. He said he wasn't angry with her over that though. Howard said either way he had no father around. He asked how he figured out how to have the capacity to love his son and play with him when he didn't have that as a kid. He asked if he went to therapy or did he talk to someone about it. Quentin said he is older now and he always liked kids. He said he likes hanging around couples that have kids. He said if you meet them and hang out they have friends who have kids. He said then you meet other kids. He said that the mothers would get crushes on him because he was good with kids. He said that they loved that he was good with kids.
Howard said he was shocked to learn he's living in Israel. He said he never expected him to get married. Quentin said at that point he wasn't either. Howard asked who this woman is. He said he must have been completely consumed with his career. Quentin said he has talked to Howard about how in the early 2000s he had baby fever. He said hew wanted to have a kid. He said that he was willing to knock up anyone if it happened. He said the kid won't give a shit. He said that didn't happen and then the baby fever broke. Howard asked if he was having unprotected sex for that reason. Quentin said he was having unprotected sex even without wanting that. He said he remembers Howard telling him to have fun out there. He said he had shit to do though. He said people would tell him that once you have a baby it changes your life completely. He said he didn't want to change his life.
Howard said he realized he wanted to make movies for a living and that's what he wanted to keep doing. He said it worked out for him. Quentin said he's been in the business for 30 years and he's playing the game at the highest level.
Howard said he thinks there's a window when you're doing something like making movies. He said that most great artists have a window. He asked if he felt driven to get them done so he didn't lose that window. Quentin said he thinks he had finished the Kill Bill movies and he was dating Sophia Coppola and he asked her mother about making movies and he was told that he was in his mountain climbing years and he was going up and up on bigger and bigger mountains.
Howard asked Quentin about his wife and how she wanted to live in Israel for a good part of the year. He asked if he was okay with that. Quentin said he is. He said the first 3 years of dating they spent in Los Angeles. He said she would be in L.A. for 2 months and then she'd go. He said she's a model and singer. He said he had met her many years earlier in Israel. He said he was there for the premiere of Inglourious Basterds. He said he met her in this club and he was dancing with her for 3 hours. He said he had to throw his shirt away from dancing so much. He said the weird part is they don't remember meeting each other. He said they don't remember what was said but they remember dancing for 3 hours. Howard asked if he wishes he had a film of that. Quentin said he just loves that they were so blown away by each other that they just remember touching. He said that they were meant for each other. He said he had never had an evening that great. He said she's a fucking knock out too. He said she's a beauty. He said her father is the most famous pop singer in Israel too. He said everyone there knows who she is there. He said the next night she came to the premiere and they hung out there. He said he had to leave and he went to Rome. He said he was there for a day and he called her the day after and asked her to come hang out. He said she flew out and met him there. He said she ended up coming back to Los Angeles with him. He said neither of them were ready for the relationship yet though. He said they didn't think they were ready for it at the time. He said it just didn't seem right at the time. He said the drifted apart. He said then they went off and lived their lives. Howard asked how you do that. Quentin said he may have been scared. He said he wasn't but maybe the relationship ran its course. He said that the were strangers in the night kind of thing.
Quentin said about 6 years later he was on a cruise. He said he met a friend of Daniella's on the cruise. He said that he talked to her about how great she was. He said he figured that she had moved on. He said this was six years later. He said he said a bunch of nice things about her. He said he figured maybe she'd go back home and run into her and tell her. He said that was the plan. He said she went up to her state room and called Daniella. He said then he got a call from the friend and met her in the coffee shop. He said she tells him that she's just broken up and he should give her a call when he gets back home. Quentin said he went home and did call her. He said they had a nice conversation. He said they talked a few times and they decided to get together again. He said no promises. He said they wanted to see each other. He said he told her that they should meet in Paris. He said he was gearing it to work out. He said that they went to Paris and they have been together ever since. Howard said that's something. He said that's unusual that you break up for 6 years and then get back together. Quentin said she's a wonderful wife and mother. He said she's just a wonderful lady.
Quentin said that they usually spend 3 months in Israel and then 3 in L.A. He said he got stuck in Israel for 8 months when COVID started. He said once things loosened up they started spending 2 months here and 2 or 4 weeks in L.A. He said that they just go back and forth. He said she's fine with him going out for a time. He said she wants him to love being there in Israel. He said she wants him to go out and have fun with his friends and then miss them and come home. Howard said guys will run back faster if the wife lets them do that. He said it works that way.
Howard said he's happy for him. He said it's quite remarkable. Howard asked if he speaks Hebrew. Quentin said he can speak childish Hebrew. He said he's learning it with his son. He said he hasn't started putting them together in sentences. He said he watches all of the baby TV channels over there. He said he can say some animal names in Hebrew. Howard said maybe his next film will be in Hebrew. Quentin said he doubts it. Howard said he's heard the food is amazing over there. Quentin said it really is. He said Tel Aviv is very much like Los Angeles but much smaller. He said the weather is similar and they have a beach there. He said the mountains are there. He said the night life is similar. He said the food is amazing and his wife is a great cook. Howard ask if he gets recognized there a lot. Quentin said absolutely.
Howard said he wants to know about this video store setup he has in his home. Howard asked what the fascination is with videotape when you can have all of these films on digital. Quentin said this place went out of business in 1997 or 98. He said when he bought all of the cassettes then it was what they watched at the time. He said there was nothing wrong with that at the time. He said it wasn't a retro thing at the time. He said he had invested so much in that place. He said he had a nice collection. Howard asked if that's what makes him a great director. He said he has a great memory for these films he watched. Howard asked if he needs to draw on that stuff to make his own thing. Quentin said he's drawing too much from that. He said he was immersed in film growing up. He said it's not dissimilar to a football player being immersed in the game. Howard said he relates to that with painting. He said he has to figure out how to draw a tree and gets obsessed with it.
Howard said Quentin has a new book called Cinema Speculation and he talks about films that are perfect and things like that. Quentin said you don't look at films like they're perfect. He said Jaws does seem like a perfect film. He said it's just taste though. He said there does seem to be a collection of films from the 70s that just seem perfect. He said what makes them perfect is that he can't imagine anyone thinking they're not perfect. He said they have this entertainment factor that almost anyone can relate to. He said he thinks Jaws and Dirty Harry fall into that category.
Howard said Dirty Harry changed cop movies. He said that's what he says in the book. Howard and Quentin talked about the movie Bullitt too. They were movies that changed the cop movie genre.
Howard asked Quentin if he has met Clint Eastwood. Quentin said he did him a big solid and he talks about it. He said he was he president of the jury when he won an award for Pulp Fiction.
Howard asked if he displays his Oscars in the house. Quentin said he has a whole shelf in his library. He said he doesn't take people in there though. He said what he has is the script in the room. He said he would see the award by the script.
Howard asked if he feels he has won the right amount of awards for his films. Quentin said he feels absolutely satisfied. He said he should have won for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. He said he really though he should have won best Screenplay. He said that didn't work out. He said that would have been a nice record. He said if he had won he would have tied with Woody Allen.
Howard said he understands what he's saying. He said he doesn't remember the years. Quentin said any time he lost he felt he should have won.
Howard asked if he thinks that people have a bias against him. Quentin said he doesn't think so. He said there shouldn't be. He said there are only four other people who have won best original screenplay. He said there are only four.
Howard asked if he thinks that Ingmar Bergman and Filini aren't his cup of tea. Quentin said he has started to give in to Filini with his black and white films. He said he has only seen a couple of Bergman films and he didn't get it and thought they were boring.
Howard they talked about him reviving Travolta's career with Pulp Fiction. He said it must suck that Harvey Weinstein went away because he was such a supporter of his films. He said it has to suck. Quentin said it does. Howard said you want to praise the guy for being so insightful. Quentin said it's said and almost Shakespearian in a way. Howard said it's almost a great idea for a movie. Robin said he was a devil to almost everyone but him. Quentin said not everyone but yeah. He said he had a lot of friends but they scattered like cockroaches.
Howard said in his book he wrote about the movie Joe and the movie Where's Papa that inspired him. He said that those were some of his favorites too. He said Where's Papa played in a theater for 4 years in Boston and it made money every day. He said that he would not want to go into radio now and he thinks Quentin wouldn't want to get info film at this point. Quentin said it's not what we signed up for. He said things are not the same as they were when he got into it. Howard said now you have to wonder what to do. Quentin said he's going to make one more film and he's not in a rush. He said you wonder what a film is now. He said he's not sure if he wants to do a film just for a streaming service. He said he's not sure what the business will become. He said he wants to know what it is before he does the next one.
Howard said Martin Scorsese said that comic book movies aren't really cinema. He asked where Quentin stands on that. Quentin said he's an old man so he's not going to be into Ant Man vs. The Wasp. He said that's just not his thing. Quentin said he used to collect Marvel comic books. He said he loved them. He said if all of this was coming out in 86 he'd be down with it. He said he's too old now. He said he talked to a kid he had never met before at a party the other day. He said this kid asked what he thought about super hero movies. He said he was maybe 16 or 17. He said he saw the first Iron Man at 4 or 5. He said to him those movies are movies. He said there has been no competition since then. He said it's that or the Star Wars movies or the Harry Potter movies.
Howard asked if Quentin feels pressured to do something like that. Quentin said not really. He said he has never been a special effects kind of guy. He said he's been the kind of guy who thinks if you didn't shoot it on the day then it doesn't exist. He said he likes doing the practical effects and make up effects. He said they capture it on film. He said the don't give it to a bunch of dweebs to have it done in 6 months.
Howard asked if there is anything in porn that's redeeming. Quentin said he really doesn't know porn other than the 5 minute shorts you use to jerk off to. He said he's not sure of any director who graduated from porn to main stream movies. He said there were some who went from porn into exploitation movies. He said there were some guys like that.
Howard said it's amazing how much Quentin knows about film. Quentin was talking about the porn stuff and Russ Meyer.
Howard said he mentioned Texas Chainsaw Massacre and he thought that was kind of a goofy movie. Quentin said he thinks it's a masterpiece.
Howard asked if he's friendly with Steven Spielberg. Quentin said he is but he hasn't seen him in a few years. He said he went duck hunting with him once in 1995. He said there were a couple of guys who got into duck hunting and Steven called him up asking him to go with Bob Zemeckis and John Milius. He said he had never gone duck hunting before but he went. He said he had to go get his duck license and he had done some clay pigeon shooting when he was a kid. He said he was never really good at things the first time he did them but when he went shooting he was good at that. He said he wasn't the ineffectual idiot that he usually was.
Quentin said he went out to practice before going hunting. He said John and his buddies were there and they told him to do this skeet shooting thing first. He said that John laughed and said that kid is a natural. He said it might be one of his proudest moments in his life.
Howard asked what happens when he goes duck hunting. Quentin said he got a duck. Howard asked if he felt bad. Quentin said he had a whole conversation with himself before he went. He said he was going to eat it so there's that. He said he was caught up in his whole liberal humanism bullshit so he had that conversation with himself. He said he would only shoot the duck if he knew he'd kill it and not make it suffer. He said he had that thought. He said he was in the blind and his blood was up. He said 2 hours later he was like ''fuck that shit'' and he was trying to blow them all out of the sky. He said he winged one and was saying that some wolf will be eating that one.
Howard said what a heady trip that was to hang out and do that with those directors. Quentin said Spielberg said something that night that he had never heard before. He said he knew that when it came to the Oscars he had a feeling he was going to win for Pulp Fiction. He said Steven was telling him he didn't think he was gong to win and Bob was going to win. He said he thought he was going to win Best Director. He said that he thought that he was going to win Best Original Screenplay. He said then he turned to him and said ''second movie, little gold man. Not bad.'' He said that was so great.
Howard asked if he thinks about that line and talks about it. Quentin said that he still refers to he Oscar as the little gold man.
Howard asked if Spielberg is the greatest of all time or does he think he is himself. Quentin said he knows what he means. He said Spielberg is a director who doesn't need tow write his own scripts. He said if there was ever anyone who was born to make movies it's Spielberg. He said it's almost like he didn't have to learn anything. It was like he was born knowing how to do it all. He said if he was more religious he'd think that he had a god given gift.
Quentin said Steven is amazing to talk to about movies. He said they were having a conversation about this Marlon Brando movie that wasn't very well known. He said he talked to Spielberg about it and he said Brando was good in it but his teeth were too white. He said he wanted to blow him when he heard that. He said he knew that detail and remembered it. He said he loves that about him.
Quentin said that he brought up The Guns of the Navarone with Steven and he recited the speech from the start of the film.
Howard asked Quentin about Brando and if he would have put up with his bullshit. Quentin said he has a feeling that if he was a dick and didn't respect him then he would have been like Kubrick and walked off. He said he would never put up with any actor like that. He said he would walk off an leave it up to the studio to figure out who stays and who goes. He said he has no problem firing people. He said they're there to do a job and they have to go if they aren't working out. He said he has an example. He said one thing he doesn't abide is actors being late. He said from time to time someone may over sleep. He said that can happen. He said then there's stories about Tom Hardy showing up 2 or 3 hours late. He said that's what he's heard. He said if an actor was ever disrespectfully that late he's probably already on his way home. He said he'd go home and not fight with them. He said he'll call the studio and have them work it out. He said he won't go back until he's told it will never happen again. He said he won't let an actor disrespect him or his crew in that way or any way.
Howard asked why actors can't be told what to do and how to act. Quentin said that you can tell them in a general way. He said he had to do that with Jamie Foxx in Django. He said he had to remind him he was playing a slave.
Howard said he heard he pitched a movie to Paramount and they rejected it. Quentin said he came up with an idea and they worked out the beats in the writing room. He said the guy who wrote The Revenant went off and wrote it. He said he still thinks they should make it.
Howard asked how long it took to write this book. He said it answers a lot of questions about him as a director and what he was thinking. He said it would seem it took a long time to flesh out and put together. Quentin said he has been wanting to write a book like this for about 12 years. He said he worked on a couple before this one. He said there are pieces of those in this book. He said it took about 2 years once he figured out what he wanted to do.
Howard said Quentin knows what he's talking about and it's amazing the career he's had. He said if you put out one or two good movies that's good. He asked if he became superstitious at all in his life. Quentin said no. He said when Grindhouse didn't do well it was like a kick in the balls though. He said that he thought that he could take his audience whenever he went. He said they showed that wasn't the case. Howard asked if he figured that out. Quentin said it was way too obscure. He said if they had made it as a much smaller project maybe it would have worked.
Howard said he loves the book. He said he loves what he wrote about Deliverance. He said what a monumental movie that was. He said what a dark film that was. He said Taxi Driver was great too. He said he loves the book.
Robin said she loves that in Quentin's movies you get surprised by what people can do. She said it happened for her with Jackie Brown and then Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Howard said he loves that he pointed out that Harvey Keitel was a white pimp in Taxi Driver. Quentin said he killed it in that role. He said he's not downplaying it.
Howard said he really did love the book. He said he has one more question. He asked how his relationship is with Brad Pitt after the last time he was on the show. He talked about getting high with Brad Pitt. Quentin said he thinks that Brad thinks he's a blabbermouth about that. He said he's really not. He said Brad made some reference to it at a film festival press conference. He said he thought it was okay to talk about. He said he thinks Brad forgot he talked about it. Howard said he felt awful about it when it hit the news back then. Quentin said he's wondering what he said today that's going to make news. Howard said maybe that blowing Steven Spielberg comment.
Howard said he and Brad Pitt seem to have made up since that whole thing went down. Quentin said he and Brad have no problems at all.
Howard asked who he has worked with that was the best actor ever. Quentin said he has worked with so many actors. He said he hopes they all do well. He said the idea is to create an environment for them to work well in. He said he won't say that anyone is better than anyone else. He said he will answer in a less ba-boom kind of way. He said what came to mind first was with just one scene. He said he was shocked at how riveted he was with one take on Django Unchained where they're around the table and Leo is playing Calvin Candy. He said he has always made it a point to like his villains. He said he was playing a monster. He said Leo just committed 100 percent. He said he was doing that scene and doing a talk and all of a sudden he was able to see the world from Calvin's perspective. He said he never had a fucking chance and he realized that. He said Leo captured the humanity of the guy trapped in this inhuman situation.
Howard asked if he thinks he could write Django today. Quentin said he thinks so. He said they won't say no. He said it came out and it was a huge smash. He said bad think pieces are good. He said it means your movie is about something. He said you have to have the balls and shoulders to handle that.
Howard asked Quentin to save either Christoph Waltz or Samuel L. Jackson on a boat that's sinking. Quentin said he can tell you that Christoph would be the less cantankerous life boat companion. Howard said here's the headline, Quentin would kill Sam Jackson.
Howard gave Quentin some plugs for his book Cinema Speculation and started to wrap up. Howard said he could spend another 9 hours with him today. Quentin has a podcast too so Howard plugged that. Howard said they had a lot to talk about that they didn't get to today.
Howard asked if Quentin is going to convert. Quentin said he has no plans to do that. They spent a little more time talking about living in Israel and things like that.
Howard asked who his favorite music artists are. Quentin said he would say that Bob Dylan is at the top of the list. He said he has never used his music in his films. He said that he likes Johnny Cash, Stevie Wonder and Elvis too. Howard let Quentin go after giving him more plugs. They were done around 11:10am.
Robin asked if he has a scratch pad next to the bed. Howard said he does and he wakes Beth up when he gets up. He said it's enough already with this career of his. He said it's been making him mental since he was 20. Robin said he could have the good performance without getting stressed. She said there are people who can do that. Howard said no there aren't. Robin said Einstein didn't stress out. Howard said we don't know that.
Howard said Neil Young is one of the best. He went through some of his music history with Buffalo Springfield and then coming out with Crazy Horse. He played a couple of songs as he went through his history.
Howard said maybe Einstein would have been stressed out if he had to talk to Neil Young. He played song after song going through Neil's history.
Howard said Neil went to Crosby Stills and Nash. He said he did the lead on Woodstock. He said this is him playing guitar. He played some of that. He said even just that makes him a genius. He said he won't sit there telling you what a genius the guy is.
Howard said Neil did it all. He said he did so many more great songs. He played a few more clips of songs.
Howard said this is genius. He asked how you can't be stressed out thinking about this interview. Howard was singing along to the songs and the audio was delayed so he wasn't really singing along.
Howard asked how he could be this good. He said his problem is that he has to interview less accomplished people. He said this is too much. He kept singing along but the delay between what he was hearing and what was coming out of the radio was a bit off.
Howard said he has to interview one hit wonders instead of guys like this. Robin said he's set if he does that. Howard said he wants to interview Lou Bega Jr. He said that or maybe the Macarena guys. He said Lou Bega was Mambo #5. He said he can talk about that and then say goodbye. He played some of that song too.
Howard said getting back to Neil he can talk to him about Harvest. He played some songs from that album.
Howard said when he wrote that thing he had just had back surgery. He told Robin some history about the songs from that album.
Howard asked how you can't be stressed out over this. He said he's not worthy. Robin said this is why he has this stress. Howard read about what Neil was up to when he wrote this one song ''A Man Needs a Maid.'' He went through more songs and said he wishes he could be relaxed.
Howard said maybe his favorite song is ''Alabama.'' He played that one and played song after song. Howard said no one is doing this anymore. He said there are so many great songs.
Howard answered a knock at the door and it was fake Arnold Schwarzenegger. He was saying he loves that song ''A Man Needs a Maid.'' Howard played that for Arnold as he was crying about it.
Howard said he was up all night thinking about Neil Young. He said he just loves him so much. He said one of the best marketing moves ever was when he joined Crosby Stills and Nash. He said he went out and got that album as well as the Crazy Horse album. He said this is why he's a neurotic mess this morning. He said he would sit in his bedroom and listen to Neil. He said he loved his music.
Howard took a call from a guy who asked if Robin really appreciates the guy behind this anxiety. He said he has some businesses he runs and he worries about his employees. He said it's hard to run a business. He said Howard is running this company and stressing out all the time.
Robin said she does this so Howard will enjoy the interview. She said she fears that his stress robs him. Howard said his mother told him to quit the business already. He said he appreciates what the caller was saying. He said he knows Robin caress that he may jump out a window. He said that's very possible. He said he takes this all very seriously.
Howard said he's ready to vomit over talking about himself. He said let's not do that anymore. Robin asked if his therapist has talked about repositioning things. Howard said every day for 20 years he has. He said it works to a degree. Howard said he needs a kick in the ass.
Howard said he wrote to Rob and said Shatner wouldn't say motherfucker and just laughed. He said Rob loved that. Howard played the song and let it play through the part where Bill avoids saying motherfucker. Howard asked who knew that he was so metal.
Robin said he sounds a little bit like Wendy the Slow Adult singing that as Freddy Krueger. Howard said Rob said now they need a George Takei version that's edited together like Dueling Banjos.
Howard said Rob loves the song. Robin said it's incredible how energetic Bill is in that. She said he really went for it.
Howard said he was talking to someone and he was thrown off a bit by this. He said someone brought up Jay Leno being burned up in a fire. He said he was asked if he was happy or upset. Howard said of course he was upset by it. He said this was someone he knows. He won't say who asked. He said he has had his differences with Jay but he feels bad for the guy. He said he has been a big fan until he had his differences. He said the guy is a huge talent. He said he used to go see his comedy 30 years ago. He said it's so crazy.
Howard said Jay is a fan of old cars. He said he doesn't get it. He said this car he was working on was so old that it had a horn that sounds like ''Ahooogah.'' He said Jay was working on the car and the gasoline spilled and got on Jay's shirt and it caught fire. He said the thing sparks and lit him on fire. He said he was lucky he didn't lose vision or his ears. He said he read about that. He said he looks at those old cars and he's happy that they have new cars. He said it was a steam car and we don't need that now.
Robin said even new cars are burning houses down. She said the electric cars are doing that. Robin said Jay was working on the first prototypes of cars that didn't work very well. Howard said Jay is going to sue Henry Ford over this. He said he'll have to dig him up and sue him.

He said this fucking thing was recalled because people were having all kinds of problems with it. He said the brakes were fucked up and hydro planing. He said Jay is involved with cars from when they first invented the cars. He said he wouldn't go anywhere near them.

Robin said Jay called TMZ over this and told them that he was lucky and that it was not that bad. She said he had third degree burns and he'll be back out in a couple of weeks. Robin said that's crazy. Howard said it sounds pretty bad to him.
Howard said he's not sure who is into these old cars. Robin said he was so lucky that they had someone there to help. She said that Jay sometimes works alone. She said this guy was able to jump on Jay and smother the flames. Robin said he could have been hurt worse. Howard said he doesn't take pleasure in this at all just so everyone knows.

He said that if people want to put you down then let them do it. He said call someone a name. He said it's all just bullshit and a waste of time.
Howard said he thinks that is why Neil can still put out new music. He said many are afraid of the fan reaction. He asked if you can tell someone to not give a shit. He said it's not that simple. He said some aren't wired like he is. He said that some of us have thin skins. Neil said he's just happy to be here. He said he likes creating music. He said as long as he hears a song in his head he'll be able to go on. He said he doesn't think about putting something out next year. He said he just doesn't give a shit.
Howard said he wants to go through his history. He said he thinks this is why he's the godfather of Grunge. He went through his history with the bands Buffalo Springfield and bands like that. Howard said that Neil's music was on Spotify and they had a show that was putting out information about the COVID vaccine that wasn't right. He said Neil had his music taken off the service. He said it was unbelievable that he did that. Neil said he heard that someone was saying this thing about COVID and doctors. He said he was upset about this misinformation. He said nurses and doctors were distressed by this. He said this show was about misinformation and he listened to it and he was saying this stuff knowing it wasn't true. He said people are dying. He said that was at the start of COVID or halfway through. He said we're still in it. He said he called management up and said we're out of there. He said they were kind of shocked but who cares. He said the guy who runs it just cares about money. He said he met the guy and he just turned into money, money, money and being number 1. He said it really doesn't matter.
Howard said this is integrity. He said when he says he's taking his music off Spotify how much money does that turn down. Neil said he didn't know and he didn't care. He said he knows he's going to do fine. He said that the other streaming services play hi-res and they're just fine. He said that Apple is half and half. He said he doesn't pay much attention to it anymore. He said we should be able to listen to great stuff in digital. He said he's working on that with everyone he works with.
Howard asked if he was upset that other musicians didn't pull out of the service. Neil said not really. He said he just wanted his music off. He said it sounds better at the other places anyway. He said it sounds like a pixelated movie on Spotify. Howard said he was also talking about how they could have Neil Young or the guy putting misinformation out there. Neil said that's what it was. He said it was about money for them. He said he hasn't gone back. He said he doesn't have to go back. He said he doesn't crave the air play like that. He said he'd rather just make good music for whoever wants it and keep on going for the next one.
Howard said he thinks this is why they call him the godfather of grunge. He said it's about his attitude.
Howard said he thinks he should be nominated for the Medal of Freedom. He said he almost threw up when he heard that Trump gave it to Rush Limbaugh. Neil said he'll skip it then.
Howard said Neil used to take part in the Rock and Roll hall of fame but he gave up when they went on TV. Howard said he thought it was bullshit after that. Neil said it used to be real. He said then it became like another award show. He said we have enough already. He said they're not even doing that well. He said they can do that if they want to but he doesn't want to be there. He said he ash nothing against them. He said he'd rather just make records. He said that's what he does. Howard asked if he would do a Kenned Center Honors show if he was asked. Neil said he's not sure. He said he would judge it at the time. He said it's too much thinking. He said he could be making a record instead. He said he doesn't want to think about that. He said he can do music and it gives to him and he likes that.
Howard asked if his wife has to give him time to be on his own every day. He said he's so into music and he's still driven. He said he heard that he walked into the woods to write songs. He said he went into the woods and kept humming the same song over and over. Howard said Neil hears this in and he walks out with an entire album. Neil said that's kind of how it happened. He said he likes to walk in the Rockies and it's a good thing out there. He said he likes walking alone. He said he walks as far as he can and then turns around and walks back. He said he was walking and whistling a song to himself. He said everyone does it. He said you whistle something. He said that it doesn't matter. He said he did that and found a nice melody. He said he had to remember it. He said he forgot it. He said the next day he was whistling another tune. He said he went to the same place he was whistling the other tune and it came back to him. He said he took his flip phone and recorded it. Howard asked why he has a flip phone. Neil showed it to him. He said this is the new one he has. He said it's 6:15am where he is. Howard said that's early. He asked if he stayed up all night. Neil said he didn't. He said he got up at 4. He said his friend came and picked him up and he had some breakfast and got in the car and drove over.
Howard said happy birthday because last week was a big one for him. Neil said his wife set up a part for him and they sat around for an hour or two and talked. He said Stephen and Joni was there. He said all his friends and family were there. Howard said Stephen Stills is the best. He said he loves that guy. Neil said he does too. Howard said Joni Mitchell was there too.
Howard asked how it was turning 77. He said his age is freaking him out now. He asked if he's hung up on the number. Neil said that he's in his own basement and he gets to go to work there. He said he does this show. He said he could be 119 and it doesn't matter. Howard said it does matter though. Howard asked if he's looking at his age and wondering what it's going to be like. He asked if he's freaking the fuck out. Neil said he's not freaking out. He said there is something going on. He said he just made this movie about Harvest and everyone is gone. He said he's the only one that's not gone. Howard said he made this movie about his album ''Harvest'' and he has film from when they made this album. He said it's one of the best albums in the world. He asked if that's what they're going to see. Neil said you're going to see how they did it. He said it's takes you're not used to. He said he did some of it with the London Symphony Orchestra and others. He said he did some solo shows and things like that. He said they have all of that.
Howard said the last time he was on he talked about The Barn. He said that just got nominated for a Grammy even though it was a film. He asked if he will go to the Grammys or will he just ignore the Grammys and not go. Neil said the only thing he thinks of is that it was Daryl who was nominated. He said he will do whatever. He said it doesn't seem to him that he's ever seen her at an awards show. He said she's not a normal walk on kind of girl. He said he doesn't know what will happen.
Howard said this is a movie about the process of making The Barn. Neil said she did a great thing. He said the fact that it's a Grammy should not take away from it. He said it has a lot of soul. Howard asked if she's talked about going or not. Neil said they haven't talked about it. Howard said he would talk to his wife about it if she was nominated for something like that. Neil said he couldn't wait to tell her and hug her but she already knew when he got home to her. He said he should have called her first. He said he got a call from Warner Brothers and he was going to tell her when he got home. He said she already knew though. He said it's a beautiful film. He said she makes great films.
Howard said this movie Harvest is about making the album Harvest. He said he recorded it back in the day. He said they recorded all of the stuff on film. Neil said they used three cameras and one in Nashville. He said it was cool and the had a lot of fun. He said he was making a movie at the time and he had his crew there. He said he just did everything.
Howard asked if he saw the movie the about the Beatles ''Get Back''. Neil said he did and it was interesting. Howard asked if he was interested in the way they made songs. Neil said it was interesting to see their process. He said they kept changing everything around and they were doing all of this at once.
Neil said he liked Ringo in that movie because he just laid back and gave them a beat. He said he thinks he held them together. He said without him it wouldn't have been the same. He said it wouldn't have been the Beatles without him.
Howard asked if it reminded him of being in Buffalo Springfield. He said that was kind of the same thing. He said they have some great songs like Mr. Soul. He said Neil wrote that. He played that for him. Neil said he liked that one. He said there was another one of the same thing in the archives that was a lot of this but a lot was happening so he kept going when he should have stopped. He said the original version was done in New York. He said it's the same performance but doesn't have a lot of the over dubs of the guitars. He said it's cooler.
Howard said Neil loves not doing the over dubs thing. He said he likes just doing the song straight through. Howard asked what it is about that version that bugs him. Neil said he was trying to do things like make a perfect record. He said he was really young at the time. He said that song was recorded between the first and second album. He said the original version was cool and he should have left it alone. He said it was funkier. He said it was more about what the guys had done and it was cool.
Howard asked if it's what the producer did. Neil said that's what happened. He said this guy worked for Atlantic Records and he's the one who did that.
Howard asked if he thinks he's underrated as a guitar player. He said he didn't know that was him playing the opening of Woodstock. Neil said it was an accident. He said he just started before everyone else. He said that was a good one. Howard asked if he's moved by that one. Neil said he does like that one. He said Stills original vocals were amazing. He said the over dub is great but the original was funky like the guitar was. He said things were moving so fast that they just went with it. He said they tried and they never should have tried. He said if you try too hard you've lost it already. He said you shouldn't have to try. He said it's about what comes naturally.
Howard said he hears some of his songs and he thinks that they're just great. He said he had to do multiple takes to get them where they were. Neil said he doesn't think so. He said he thinks the timing with the orchestra and the conductor made them have to do it 5 or 6 takes. Howard had a song playing from Harvest. Neil told Howard what it was like recording that song ''A Man Needs a Maid.'' Howard said he read that he was in bed the whole time he was writing this. He said just listen to this.
Howard asked if it was intimidating to do this. Neil said it's just as intimidating to them as it was for him. He said the reality of the song lives because it happened. Howard said what a song. He said this is a love song and he thinks he has written some of the best love songs ever.
Howard asked if he has a definition of love. Neil said he thinks he's living it right now. He said it's a partnership and it's a thing. He said it's a team. He said it's a beautiful relationship. He said Daryl is an artist and he just lets her do what she has to do.
Howard asked about the song Lotta Love and he gave it to Nicolette Larson. He said she heard it and said she loved it so he gave it to her. He asked if it was that simple. Neil said it was. He said he liked the song and he's happy they had a hit with it. Howard asked if she asked for more songs and help from him. Neil said she never did. Howard asked if it ruined her because her boyfriend was such a good song writer. Neil said he doesn't know. He said he never thought about it that way. He said she loved that song and lived it. He said just listen to her sing. He said it's beautiful. Howard had the song playing.
Howard said last time he was on he was talking about selling half of his catalog. He said he was kind of blown away that he heard Beck singing Old Man during a football game. Neil said that no one ever talked to him about the song being used. He said that was a mistake. He said they didn't understand the deal. He said that he loves Beck so he didn't have an issue with him doing the song. He said he didn't know it was being used for the NFL. He said those things happen in life. He said it had nothing to do with his publishing company. He said Beck got nominated for doing a cover of that song. He played some of that cover. Neil said Beck is great. He said he just heard about the Grammy nomination this morning. He said he's happy for him. He said that it's fine to do covers of his songs as long as he gets to put them out first.
Neil said he has to take a break and then get into the album. He said he has to go to the bathroom. Howard said go ahead. Neil went off to pee. Howard said he has to ask him about so much. Howard said he can't drink water or he has to pee every 5 minutes. Neil said you have to drink water. Howard said he has to pee whenever he's on a walk. He said he has a small penis and can't pee out in public. Neil said just pee behind a tree and he'll be fine.
Howard said he may end up on the cover of the NY Post. Neil said that's better than Trump being on the cover. Howard asked if he heard that he's running for president again. Neil didn't know that. He asked if he's running under a different name this time. Howard and Neil spent a few minutes talking about climate change and what's not being done about it. Neil was going on and on about how livestock is raised and how they're not doing it the right way so the planet isn't the way it should be. He said we have to get back to the way we used to do things on farms. He said we have to do them naturally or we're never going to beat this. He said we can't ignore it and the media has to cover it. He said no one wants to hear about it but they have to talk about it. He said we can't let it slide. He said we have to come together on this.
Howard said there are anti-science people who don't care. Neil said don't worry about them and focus on the people who do care. He said imagine if farms started to make a comeback. He said he used to see farms but now you just see long metal buildings. He said they have fields with nothing going on in them. He said it's all unnatural. He said the real thing that should happen is going back to natural farming. He said you have to use your imagination. He said forget about the anti-science people. He said the farms could be growing food and biofuel. He said we have an infrastructure for biofuel. He said they're on the roads. He said we'll never have all electric cars. He said the infrastructure won't be ready for electric cars in time. He said there's a country in South America that has cars all running on biofuel. He said it's not the simplest thing to do so they don't talk about it here.
Howard asked if it would be a game changer if we outlawed factory farms. Neil said absolutely. He said this is a huge thing. He said the fuel is something we can make and it's clean. He said the fuel has no footprint. He said we could change things all at once and turn things around. Howard and Neil were going back and forth about the farms and fuel stuff for a few more minutes.

Howard said the new album has a song called Love Earth that opens it up. He said he thought he was singing ''Love Her.'' Howard played some of that song from the new album ''World Record.'' Neil said we're just talking about different view points on this one. He said it's not arguing or fighting. Neil was talking about how this song came about and what he was thinking about while he wrote it. Neil was going on and on about how we have to do something to change things in this world. He said we could do it. He said it's right in front of us and nothing is hiding it but the media won't talk about it because they're self serving. He said someone has to wake that up.
Howard said he sounds like he's really frustrated. He said he thinks this frustration is about seeing this movie 100 times. He said he also wrote the song ''Ohio'' in the woods alone. He said he has seen how the world should go and we still can't get there. Neil said we can get there. He said it's still our planet and we're still here. He said we're all together and everyone has a chance to do something.
Howard said we are on the edge here on this planet. He said that the viruses going around and all of this other stuff. Neil said it's all got to do with climate and we can do something about it. Howard said this is why he doesn't give a shit about going to the Grammys. Neil said yes, he's right about that. He said it's great that they were nominated but there is something much bigger than that going on.
Howard said last time they spent a lot of time talking about Neil having polio. He said that they have found the virus there in New York state. He said it's back. He said he thinks this is why he took a stand over the vaccine. He said he must have been upset about that. He said he was brutalized by Polio. Neil said we don't want that back. He said we have to move forward. He said everything is a distraction. He said things are changing every day. He said what matters is the people and people are realizing that it's in our hands. He said this is what the record is about. He said it's in a subtle way though. He said not every song is directly about it. He said the songs just came out of nowhere in the woods. He said you can check them out and decide for yourself.
Howard played another song from the album called ''Autumn Leaves.'' Howard asked if he doubled up his voice himself on this one. Neil said he's been doing that forever. He said he played on a bunch of songs with him before Bruce. He said they don't care about that. He said he's happy if he's busy with Bruce. He said go for it.
Howard said he got to hang with Bruce and talk to him for a couple of hours. He said Bruce said he has nothing to say so he hasn't put out any music. He said that walk in the woods for Neil is what got him thinking about something so he has something to say. Neil said he didn't know it was happening. He said he was just whistling. He said it all happened one step at a time. He said the lyrics came in 2 days. He said it's a process that happened. He said it's a gift and he's so glad.
Howard asked Neil about the song writing process and how he goes through all of that. He said it's more of a process than he thought it was. Neil was going through the process with him.
Howard said he watched one video of Neil at Madison Square Garden at a Bob Dylan party. He said Neil was playing with a bunch of heavy weights. He said he was sharing the microphone with Tom Petty.
